8 Snohomish County Bar News - SEPTEMBER 2015 Lawyers Road Review continued from page 7 new one in 2013. Our Constitution has a better record, but then our constitution had unique start, and neather Zimbabwe nor Iraq have a George Washington. Still, the lawyers from other parts of the earth couldn’t help but be puzzled why we allow so many firearms in our population. Days before a man walked into a church in South Carolina and shot 9 people, a lawyer from Sweden and I were chatting at a marvelous garden party at the Inns of Court in London about the problem. He was perplexed. You are taking casualties over this 2nd Amendment, what can be done? Nothing, I told him. And notwithstanding my hope someone might have a better idea I believe this more than ever now. It is part of our foundational belief system that every American has a right to possess and use firearms. It is just one of those limits we placed on our Sovereign. Amendment of the US Constitution was raised in our conversation, but imagine the scene if an Article V constitutional convention would be called to address the problem. Perhaps I fear that event even more than the random deaths we have endured. The Rule of Law, it appears, is a question of degree. 
