American Love Stories: Narrative Ethics and the Novel from Stowe to James
American Love Stories: Narrative Ethics and the Novel from Stowe to James By Ashley Carson Barnes A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Dorothy Hale, Chair Professor Samuel Otter Professor Dorri Beam Professor Robert Alter Fall 2012 1 Abstract American Love Stories: Narrative Ethics and the Novel from Stowe to James by Ashley Carson Barnes Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Dorothy Hale, Chair “American Love Stories” argues for the continuity between two traditions often taken to be antagonistic: the sentimental novel of the mid-nineteenth century and the high modernism of Henry James. This continuity emerges in the love stories tracked here, from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Elizabeth Stuart Phelps’s The Gates Ajar, through Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Blithedale Romance and Herman Melville’s Pierre, to Elizabeth Stoddard’s The Morgesons and James’s The Golden Bowl. In these love stories—the other side of the gothic tradition described by Leslie Fiedler—desire is performed rather than repressed, and the self is less a private container than a public exhibit. This literary-historical claim works in tandem with the dissertation’s argument for revising narrative ethics. The recent ethical turn in literary criticism understands literature as practically engaging the emotions, especially varieties of love, that shape our social lives. It figures reading as a love story in its own right: an encounter with a text that might grant us intimacy with an authorial persona or else spurn our desire to grasp its alterity. -

Unfolding Time to Configure a Collective Entity: Alternative Digital Movies as Malaysian National Cinema A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Hsin-ning Chang April 2017 © 2017 Hsin-ning Chang. All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled Unfolding Time to Configure a Collective Entity: Alternative Digital Movies as Malaysian National Cinema by HSIN-NING CHANG has been approved for Interdisciplinary Arts and the College of Fine Arts by Erin Schlumpf Visiting Assistant Professor of Film Studies Elizabeth Sayrs Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT CHANG, HSIN-NING, Ph.D., April 2017, Interdisciplinary Arts Unfolding Time to Configure a Collective Entity: Alternative Digital Movies as Malaysian National Cinema Director of dissertation: Erin Schlumpf This dissertation argues that the alternative digital movies that emerged in the early 21st century Malaysia have become a part of the Malaysian national cinema. This group of movies includes independent feature-length films, documentaries, short and experimental films and videos. They closely engage with the unique conditions of Malaysia’s economic development, ethnic relationships, and cultural practices, which together comprise significant understandings of the nationhood of Malaysia. The analyses and discussions of the content and practices of these films allow us not only to recognize the economic, social, and historical circumstances of Malaysia, but we also find how these movies reread and rework the existed imagination of the nation, and then actively contribute in configuring the collective entity of Malaysia. 4 DEDICATION To parents, family, friends, and cats in my life 5 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my advisor, Prof. -
Valon Synty Suomalaiset Musiikkilehdet Osana Rockmuusikko Ville Valon Tähteyden Rakentumista 1997–2010
TAMPEREEN YLIOPISTO Maiju Karhunen Valon synty Suomalaiset musiikkilehdet osana rockmuusikko Ville Valon tähteyden rakentumista 1997–2010 Tiedotusopin pro gradu -tutkielma Maaliskuu 2013 TAMPEREEN YLIOPISTO Viestinnän, median ja teatterin yksikkö KARHUNEN, MAIJU: Valon synty. Suomalaiset musiikkilehdet osana rockmuusikko Ville Valon tähteyden rakentumista 1997–2010 Pro gradu -tutkielma, 114 s., 6 liites. (liite vain painetussa versiossa) Tiedotusoppi Maaliskuu 2013 Suomessa on ainoastaan kourallinen todellisia rocktähtiä. HIM-yhtyeen keulakuva Ville Valo on yksi heistä. Pro gradu -tutkielmani tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten suomalaiset musiikkilehdet ovat osallistuneet rocktähti Ville Valon tähtikuvan rakentumiseen lehtijuttujensa välityksellä. Valon tähtikuvan rakentumista tarkastelen suhteessa alan tutkimukseen ja kirjallisuuteen. Selvitän tutkielmani avulla myös hieman Valon suhdetta musiikkilehtien toimittajiin ja pohdin samalla, mitä Valo-tapaus kertoo suomalaisesta musiikkijournalismista. Päädyin tarkastelemaan Valon tähtikuvan rakentumista juuri musiikkilehdissä muun muassa, koska on loogista tutkia muusikon tähtikuvan muodostumista juuri musiikkilehdissä. -

Rock Is Life
Rock Is Life http://www.rock-is-life.com/reviewsinbrief.htm Reviews In Brief (2007) (2006) (2005) (2004) 2007 STARZ Greatest Hits Live MVD Entertainment Group 2007 "The live collection of the 70’s rockers greatest hits seems to capture the band in fine form. The CD is compiled from at least 3 different performances and while I found the sound to be adequate to mediocre, the quality of their material does seem to shine through. While I wouldn’t put the band in my own personal Top 10 of 1970’s rockers, they are pretty good. I think it is a shame I wasn’t musically aware in the 70’s because I probably would have liked the band. They’ve got a lively and energetic sound tied to that particular era and it does keep the ears engaged, even during the first half of the disc where the quality of the recording isn’t even as good as some bootlegs I’ve listened to over the years. The audio quality is the biggest problem I had with the entire disc. I think if you are going to reissue this type of album, you really need to make the sound more Official Site presentable than what a typical bootlegger could accomplish. You want to check out tracks like “Detroit Girls”, “Any Way That You Want It”, and “Cherry Baby” in particular, but surprisingly at least to me, each song is pretty good. Search Amazon: If you like the 70’s rock era, you probably know of the band. You’ll definitely like this release. -
BRUCE THOMAS PUMPS IT up with ELVIS COSTELLO by Dan Forte Guitar Player March 1987
BRUCE THOMAS PUMPS IT UP WITH ELVIS COSTELLO by Dan Forte Guitar Player March 1987 EVERYTHING ABOUT ELVIS Costello -his intelligent and prolific songwriting, impassioned singing, horn-rimmed visual image, ever-changing stylistic jaunts, even his anti-hero guitar playing -is so all-pervasive that his trio of sidemen, the Attractions, seems all but anonymous. (A magazine that just named Costello artist.of the year for 1986 only three years earlier misidentified the members of the Attractions in a photo caption.) But if Elvis is to be commended for his stylistic daring, the Attractions deserve equal praise for their ability to follow him down every idiomatic path, with their original fire and indelible individualism intact. Of all of Costello's talents, perhaps his strongest suit is as bandleader - not only for keeping a group together for a decade, but for choosing the musicians he did to make up his backing band. The Attractions have been together since 1977, in which time they've recorded 11 albums (plus a Best Of collection) since Elvis' debut, My Aim Is True. And night after night they have proved that at least one band (coincidentally virtually the only surviving band) from England’s punk era can play and always could. After recording his auspicious debut with uncredited backing from the American band Clover (including guitarist John McFee, currently with Southern Pacific), Declan "Elvis Costello" MacManus settled on piamst Steve Nieve, drummer Pete Thomas, and (no relation) bassist Bruce Thomas, after aluditioning, in the bassist's, words "hundreds of guys who couldn't tune up or put the guitar on right." The group's first effort, This Year's Model, not only squelched any fears of a,sophomore jinx; it kicked in with more muscle than Aim and signaled the arrival of a distinct new collective musical personality. -

A special thanks also to the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs at the University of Minnesota for some of my research on the neighborhood. For commenting on drafts of chapters, I want to thank Tim Gitzen, Nate Meyer, Amy Porter, Solvieg Brown, Marieke vanEijk, Susi Krehbiel Keefe, Karen kapusta-pofahl, Joe Esser, Sara Kaiser, Alex Bauman, and Dennis Moldestad. I’d also like to thank a few Champes – Sarah, Ava, Amelie, Richard and Sally. ii Dedication This dissertation is dedicated to the activists of the Whittier neighborhood. iii Abstract This is an anthropological ethnography of multicultural community-building among the almost all-white activists in Minneapolis’ largest neighborhood, Whittier. It shows the effects that the discourses, theories, and activities of these neighborhood activists have on the social structures that reproduce class, racial, and ethnic inequality. The first chapter analyzes the acrimonious battle over the opening of an apartment building for homeless. It shows the construction of the symbols at play, including Stability, Burden, Stakeholders, Gentrification, and Over-concentration of the poor. Chapter two explains how politics in Whittier became so polarized between competing factions of white, liberal, middle-class homeowners, who all share a love of their neighborhood’s diversity. -

Surfing, Gender and Politics: Identity and Society in the History of South African Surfing Culture in the Twentieth-Century
Surfing, gender and politics: Identity and society in the history of South African surfing culture in the twentieth-century. by Glen Thompson Dissertation presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) at Stellenbosch University Supervisor: Prof. Albert M. Grundlingh Co-supervisor: Prof. Sandra S. Swart Marc 2015 0 Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Declaration By submitting this thesis electronically, I declare that the entirety of the work contained therein is my own, original work, that I am the author thereof (unless to the extent explicitly otherwise stated) and that I have not previously in its entirety or in part submitted it for obtaining any qualification. Date: 8 October 2014 Copyright © 2015 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved 1 Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract This study is a socio-cultural history of the sport of surfing from 1959 to the 2000s in South Africa. It critically engages with the “South African Surfing History Archive”, collected in the course of research, by focusing on two inter-related themes in contributing to a critical sports historiography in southern Africa. The first is how surfing in South Africa has come to be considered a white, male sport. The second is whether surfing is political. In addressing these topics the study considers the double whiteness of the Californian influences that shaped local surfing culture at “whites only” beaches during apartheid. The racialised nature of the sport can be found in the emergence of an amateur national surfing association in the mid-1960s and consolidated during the professionalisation of the sport in the mid-1970s. -
