Playing to Death • Ken S. McAllister and Judd Ethan Ruggill The authors discuss the relationship of death and play as illuminated by computer games. Although these games, they argue, do illustrate the value of being—and staying—alive, they are not so much about life per se as they are about providing gamers with a playground at the edge of mortality. Using a range of visual, auditory, and rule-based distractions, computer games both push thoughts of death away from consciousness and cultivate a percep- tion that death—real death—is predictable, controllable, reasonable, and ultimately benign. Thus, computer games provide opportunities for death play that is both mundane and remarkable, humbling and empowering. The authors label this fundamental characteristic of game play thanatoludism. Or, more specifically, a meditation on play and death, which are mutual and at times even complementary pres- ences in the human condition. Rather, we intend an interlude in which to ponder the interconnected phenomena of play and death and to introduce a critical tool—terror manage- ment theory—that we find helpful for thinking about how play and death interact in computer games. Interaction between light and surfaces Adds effects such as soft contact shadows and colour bleeding Can be brute-forced using path tracing, but is very slow Cornell98 Global illumination is simply the process by which light interacts with physical surfaces. Surfaces absorb, reflect or transmit light. This here is a picture of the famous Cornell box scene, which is a standard environment for testing out global illumination algorithms. The only light source in this image is at the top of the image. Global illumination adds soft shadows and colour between between the cubes and the walls. There is also natural darkening along the edges of the walls, floor and ceiling. One such algorithm is path tracing. A naive, brute force path trace essentially shoot millions and millions of rays or paths, recording every surface hit along the way. The algorithm stops tracing the path when the ray hits a light. As you can imagine, this takes ages to produce a noise-free image. Nonetheless, people have started using some variants of this algorithm for movie production (e.g. “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”) What is global illumination? Scary looking equation! But can be done in 99 lines of C++ All of this makes for some scary looking maths, as illustrated here by the rendering equation from Kajiya. Yet, despite its significant contributions, outside of the gaming’s arcade golden age of the early 1980s, the history of gaming post Atari shock goes rather unrepresented as many historians simply refuse to discuss the topic for trivial reasons thus leaving a rather noticeable gap within the overall history. One such important aspect not covered by the majority of the scholarship and the primary focus of thesis argues that the history of early modern video games in the North American market did not originate during the age of Atari in the 1970s and early 1980s. Instead, the real genesis of today’s market and popular gaming culture began with the creation and establishment of the third and fourth generation of video games, which firmly solidified gaming as both a multi-billion dollar industry and as an accepted form of entertainment in the United States.
