Blue Crabs salvage series

Bridgeport, NJ -- Southern Maryland broke a three game losing streak, and in the process salvaged the three game series as they defeated the by the 4-2 final.

Southern Maryland scored first in the top of the second. Jake Optiz doubled, and moved over to third on a Jovan Rosa groundout. The next hitter Jamar Walton a sacrifice fly to score Opitz to make it 1-0. In the top of the third, two more runs were scored by Southern Maryland. Anthony Vega led things off with a . The next hitter Casey Frawley singled to put runners at first and third. Fred Lewis then drove in both runners with a two triple to make it 3-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Thomas Neal scored on a Greg Hopkins sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. The Blue Crabs added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a Casey Frawley solo homerun to make it 4-1.

Somerset attempted to make a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. Erik Hamren came of the bullpen for the save. Greg Hopkins led off for Somerset and banged a double to the left center gap. Robert Andino then struck out swinging, and the next hitter Mat Gamel traded places with Hopkins driving a double to right center to score Hopkins to make it 4-2. Gamel attempted to steal third but was thrown out by Craig Maddox for out number two. Nate Spears walked to keep the game alive, but Adam Donachie struck out swinging to end the game and give the Blue Crabs are 4-2 win.

Southern Maryland out-hit Somerset by the 10-7 mark. Fred Lewis went 3-4, with two runs driven in. Jake Opitz and Casey Frawley each had two hits, while Frawley drove in an RBI. LHP Brian Burres picked up the win, going seven , allowing a run on five hits and striking out four.

Southern Maryland has off tomorrow, and return home for a seven game homestand starting Tuesday. Game one will take place at 7:05 P.M. at Regency Furniture Stadium.
