Our downtown area was DEAD and dangerous for many years but in the last two years it has done a huge turn around and is coming alive with newly restored theaters, a new park, a new baseball field, fantastic restaurants, etc, so I would like to show you as much of our downtown area as we can manage to fit in. We are very proud of it. If there are those interested, we could go to Tuscaloosa which is about a 45 min drive to see the Univ of AL and perhaps tour the field and go to the Bryant Museum. Since we have just won another national championship, men might like to make that jaunt. Right outside Birmingham we also have the Barber Motor Sports Race Track and museum which is a fantastic place to visit and a little farther down the road is the Talladega NASCAR track which we could tour and take a lap around the track. In between Barber and Talladega there is an old catfish restaurant on the river that has won all kinds of accolades where we might dine. Many times we take groups to Montgomery to the State Capitol for a tour and lunch and then a visit to the first White House of the Confederacy which is just across the street. Montgomery also has a wonderful Civil Rights Museum that focuses on Rosa Parks and the bus boycotts. Huntsville is about a two hour drive but sometimes groups would like to go to the Space Center. In the city we have Sloss Furnace; the oldest baseball in the country, Rickwood Field; our new Railroad Park, a huge open area downtown where there may be some entertainment scheduled; our great new semi-pro baseball park, Regions Field; The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame; a tour of the Alabama Theater or the newly renovated Lyric Theater, the only two remaining vintage theaters in the theater district that are both incredible; Arlington Antebellum Home and Garden; The Vulcan Statue and Museum which are a MUST see; Birmingham Botanical Gardens which is incredible at time of year you will be here; Birmingham Museum of Art tour with one of our members who is a docent and possibly lunch there which is a real delight in itself; the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute; the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church; Pepper Place Farmers Market is open on Saturdays starting at 7 a.m. and we might do it before the welcome. Arrive May 27th. Welcome dinner will be on arrival day. Leave on June 3. I need an application and deposit check from you ASAP – deadline has been extended. Say YES and look forward to a fun week! See the flyer and application attached. Contact me with any questions.
