Dad was an honorable man, and I was always very proud of his accomplishments. He died too young, of lukemia, at age 44. When he was a young man, he was a painter with his father Leslie Teets Sr. He also was a good carpenter, and he and his dad built our houses on Pocahontas Street, side by side. I remember the pride he had when he was elected City Councilman. He worked typically 7AM-9PM every day at the Esso gas station that he owned/operated, unless someone could help him out (like me, usually). He also had a lot of pride in making a success of that gas station when several others before him had failed financially at that same location. Back then, when you pulled into a gas station, the attendant would wash your windshield and back window, check the air in your tires, check the oil, all before charging you 25 cents/gallon of gas! iii. ANNA "ANN" LEE (49) was born on Jun 16, 1919 at West Virginia. She married Eugene Westfall "Gene" Conner (86), son of Noble Floyd Conner (3205) and Lena Louise Edwards (3206), on Mar 7, 1941 at Beckley, Fayette, West Virginia. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Charleston, West Virginia. iv. LESLIE "LES" (48) was born on Nov 3, 1929 at Upshur, West Virginia. He married Barbara Jean "Bobby" Melton (62), daughter of Mont Clarence Melton Jr. (601) and Ruth Ragina Marsh Cutright (602), on Oct 20, 1956 at Oakland, Garrett, Maryland. He died on Aug 16, 2004 at San Marcos, Hays, Texas, at age 74. He was buried on Aug 20, 2004 at Evergreen Cemetery, Gustine, Comanche, Texas. Leslie Teets, Jr. was born November 03, 1929, the youngest of four children - to Leslie Teets and Delphia Stansberry Teets. His place of birth was Buckhannon, West Virginia, which is located in the north central part of West Virginia. His older brother’s names were Dennis Billy and John Jay; his sister was Anna Lee who later adopted the name of Ann.

Leslie attended the East Main Street elementary school and graduated in 1947 from Buckhannon Upshur High School. While a student in high school he played football. He always strived to improve himself in education. At one point in his life, he selected a word from the dictionary each day, and in that way improved his vocabulary which he maintained in later years.

After high school he served in the National Guard of West Virginia and received an honorable discharge in September 1950. He attended West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, Marshall College in Huntington, West Virginia and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fairmont State College of West Virginia in August of 1951.

His reenlistment in the West Virginia National Guard resulted in a second honorable discharge January 1952. Following this service, he joined the United States Air Force at the height of the Korean War, also January 1952. He described his duties as varied, generally as clerical and administrative. During the course of three years, nine months he was stationed at Sampson AFB, Geneva, New York; James Connally AFB, Waco, Texas; Harlingen AFB, Harlingen, Texas; Johnston Island AFB: Pacific Theater; and West Palm Beach AFB, Florida, where he was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in October 1955.

Immediately upon being discharged, he was employed by Curry Chevrolet Company in Buckhannon, West Virginia, as a dealer management trainee. He was enrolled at General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan, for two months; then discontinued this schooling to accept a full time position as a Chevrolet salesman for the company named above. His wife- to- be was employed by this firm as a bookkeeper. After being with this company one year, Leslie and Barbara (Bobby) Jean Melton were married and moved to Oscoda, Michigan, where for a short time, Leslie was sales manager for an Oldsmobile Dealer.

After touring parts of the Southwest, West and West Coast of the United States, Leslie and Bobby decided to settle in Arlington, Texas in March of 1957. Here he was employed by Vandergriff Chevrolet Company as a new car salesman until September 1958. He then made the decision to enter North Texas State College in Denton, Texas, and the teaching profession. In 1959, he and Bobby moved to Denton where later their first son, Ricky was born. Upon completing certification requirements in the field of business education in January, 1960, he was a substitute teacher in Lewisville and Dallas, Texas during the winter and spring of 1960. The following fall he was employed by the Stephenville, Texas Public Schools as Distributive Education Coordinator-Teacher for Stephenville High School. In 1961 his and Bobby’s second son, Todd was born. Leslie did a lot of extra-curricular activities with his students, often including the family on excursions. Something of note, he wrote an autobiography of his life up to that point. He wrote that his greatest inspiration was his mother. Through tough economic times, she was a wonderful wife, mother, housekeeper, cook, nurse, a good neighbor and more. He was especially impressed that over a period of ten

years, when she could find the spare time, she crocheted an elaborate bedspread. He felt that her perseverance for her goals, inspired him to pursue his own goals of self-improvement through higher education.

In the summer of 1964, Leslie received an opportunity to become a manager of Sears Catalogue Stores. He trained for a few months at various stores in south Texas while he and the family awaited the birth of Meri in September. Prior to Meri’s being born in Seguin, Texas, Leslie had received an assignment as manager of a store there. While living and working in Seguin, he supervised the building of a new store, and was also manager of stores in nearby towns. In July of 1967, he was transferred to Alice, Texas, where he again was instrumental in having a new store built.

In the summer of 1970, Leslie went to work for Houston Natural Gas Distribution as a sales representative for the Gulf Coast Division. He and the family lived in West Columbia, Texas for two years until a promotion to corporate headquarters in Houston, resulted in a move to northwest Houston. One year later, Leslie accepted the position of manager of a gas company office in El Campo, Texas. He also oversaw neighboring small towns as manager. Later, he was employed as a district manager. During the years he managed stores and offices, he was a member of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce in Stephenville, the Lions Club in Seguin and Chamber of Commerce in El Campo. His and Bobby’s children did most of their growing up in El Campo; then eventually left for college and other pursuits. In the early 80’s, Leslie commuted to a district office in Richmond, Texas, where he was a natural gas consultant for Entex, Inc. He arranged to have natural gas installed into new subdivisions as they were being built. In 1983, he and Bobby moved to Richmond where they lived until 1993. In 1987, Leslie took early retirement at the age of fifty eight years. February 1993, he and Bobby moved to Marble Falls where they both enjoyed a year and a half of retirement. They then decided to go back to their home town of Buckhannon, West Virginia, to help care for family members. They returned to Texas in April of 2001 where they lived in Seguin, thirty four years after they had lived there in the 1960’s. Leslie’s health was declining and he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in October, 2001. March 2002, they moved to San Marcos to a retirement community, in order to be near their son, Todd. Because of Leslie’s illness, he entered Hays Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and later to Care Inn of San Marcos, in November of 2003.

Thus far, I have stated the statistics of Leslie’s life. In addition to his growing up days, education, military service and jobs, he led a most interesting life. In his boyhood days, he loved the outdoors. He liked to fish, hunt and swim. He loved to visit his grandparents who gave him the experience of seeing grain ground at a mill. To get to the mill, he rode a farm horse. They transported the grain with a wagon. He inherited a pie cupboard made of walnut that his grandfather built. The grandfather also built a youth size bed that still has the original bolts to hold the frame. Leslie had fond memories of both sets of grandparents. While he and Bobby were in West Virginia during the 1990’s, they visited the old home place of his great grandfather. The summer of 1998, they helped organize a family reunion of the descendants of his great grandfather Stansberry. Leslie helped relatives make up photo and family history packets to be given to each family who attended the reunion. More than a hundred people enjoyed the weekend reunion, many of them having traveled great distances from various parts of the United States. There was much reminiscing of being in Buckhannon as children visiting their relatives.

Over the years of being in college and the military, Leslie made many friends with whom he stayed in touch. In traveling the different states and having the many jobs, he and Bobby met people from all walks of life. While on Johnston Island in the Air Force, Leslie taught himself photography and learned developing of photos. He snorkel dived for sea shells which have graced their homes ever since. When the children came along, he taught his love of fishing, hunting, camping and hiking to the boys. Meri and Bobby went along on several of the camping trips and went to deer camp a few times. One of Leslie’s hobbies was tying flies for fishing. He also was a stamp collector for a few years. He loved to travel and did a great deal of it. He made trips to Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, California, Big Bend, Texas; Florida, West Virginia and points in between. People who made these trips with him were his and Bobby’s eldest son, Ricky, a great nephew, Robert, a close friend, Jack, and Bobby’s Uncle Charley. at different times. He and Bobby also traveled to Big Bend National Park in Texas with Leslie’s sister, Ann, her husband, Gene and Uncle Charley. They all had lots of fun traveling in an S-10 Blazer for a week. They did some hiking and sightseeing in general. In June of 1989, he and Bobby had a memorable camping trip in Colorado; they toured the Royal Gorge in Colorado Springs, old mines, ghost towns, fished the many streams and visited some good friends in Grand Junction. In later years, his greatest joy was driving the back roads in Texas and West Virginia in his S-10 Blazer. While in West Virginia, he got re-acquainted with a cousin, Eugene, who helped him repair a small family cemetery. He liked to be with older people and was very interested in genealogy. He acquired a

journal that one great grandfather had written while building a church. He spent time with relatives who could remember much of what happened in the family during their lifetimes. From the time he could use a camera, he was the family photographer. He photographed wild life and the flora and fauna of wherever he happened to be. The years he and Bobby were in West Virginia he spent two winters filling photo albums from more than fifty years of saving the photos. Leslie and Bobby have three children, Ricky, Todd and Meri; eleven grandchildren, Kira, Jeremiah, Josh, Justin, Jared, Kelsea, Jacob, Danen, Joey, Kayti and Nikki and one great- grandson, Colt. They were also blessed to have a godchild named Hope. For a period of time, they had the care of her as a six month old baby who grew into a toddler. Leslie, Bobby and the family enjoyed many happy hours of teaching her to eat, walk, and play. Hope traveled with them to the beach or to visit friends. Sometimes Hope’s siblings, Ann, Dawn and Neal stayed with Leslie and Bobby, as long as a week. Leslie also had many nieces and nephews who loved to spend time with him.

Leslie was a very active person. He and Bobby started walking in El Campo before it was "cool" They continued to walk in West Virginia, often in the snow. He liked the snow and the autumns when the leaves on the trees changed color. He liked to garden and raised tomatoes that supplied the neighborhood. He liked to have their homes neat with lawns mowed and garages that would actually hold cars instead of junk. He was proud of the fact that he and Bobby had owned and maintained six homes in Texas. He always took good care of the cars; spent many hours cleaning and polishing them. He was good to help older people who lived alone and needed things done for them. While in West Virginia, he and Bobby liked to have friends and family members come to visit so that they could take them sightseeing. One summer they had four of their eleven grandchildren and son, Todd to stay for a week. They took them to many scenic places in the state.

Leslie had a special friend who owns a working ranch in Gustine, Texas. He very much enjoyed being with David and helping with chores on the ranch. He learned things about raising cattle, repairing and building fences, irrigation, the crops that are grown in Comanche county. He and David and family, often with Bobby, and their family, enjoyed many hours together, whether visiting, ranching or even camping in their younger days.

Leslie led a full, productive life, had many friends and relatives who will keep good memories of him. He was proud of his education, serving in the military and of always moving forward in his endeavors. When his children were young, he loved taking them on trips, whether hunting, camping or traveling. He always had interesting things for them to do. The grandchildren will remember riding in the Blazer, going swimming with him, sightseeing, fishing, touring caverns, a coal mine and many other activities. In the seventy four years of his life he was known as Leslie, Junior. Les, Daddy, Dad, Teets or Pa-Pa. He will most certainly be missed by all of his loved ones. He also went by the name of (48) "Les." He lived on May 8, 1998 at Buckhannon, Upshur, West Virginia. Found a plaque that Les received in Seguin at American Legion; has his dates of service in Korean War- he never saw war duty; was a staff sergeant for US Air Force in Waco, Harlingen and Johnston Island in the South Pacific. Think he did clerical duty mostly in the states; on Johnston that was ,I think, a mile long and 1/4 mile wide, he was billeting officer. Johnston was a fuel stop for military planes; often servicemen's families were with them; Les was responsible for providing them a place to stay, usually overnite. he did a lot of snorkel diving for fish and shells and photography to keep himself occupied when off duty. In Waco, there was a terrible tornado; he had been lifequarding at the pool; had to call everyone out due to weather. Later he helped clean up after the storm. I have pictures of his diving activities and color slides of his photography of the island. One time for R & R, he went to Hawaii for 2 weeks; I have wonderful slides of that trip. He had a great time touring the islands those 2 weeks. DATES OF SERVICE: Jan 1952 to Oct 1955 I met him Christmas Eve 1955 at Curry Chevrolet in Buckhannon. He was sponsored by Mr. Curry for a 2-year course at General Motors Institute in Flint, Mich. He was to go to school in Flint for 2 months, then go to the dealership and do hands on training for 2 months. These were to be alternated 2 months in Flint, 2 months at Curry's. During his training, he decided to become a saleman at Curry's . Long story, if you have interest, I can tell you more Bought his first car in Waco, new. Pontiac convertible.

Richard Terrence "Ricky" Teets says that his Dad, Leslie Teets Jr., told him the story that Dice as a young man got on a riverboat somewhere in Ohio, traveled down the Mississippi on the riverboat, probably working his way all the way to New Orleans. He made quite a bit of money working at whatever, then in New Orleans, got into a big poker game. He liked to gamble. Les said that is why he was called "Dice". Possibly no one knew what his given name was. He won a lot of money in the poker game; left and the men from whom he had won the money, jumped him outside; shot him with a 12-guage shotgun (blew him away). They then put him in a box and sent him back to WV on the train. Ricky said his Dad (Les Jr.) had taken him to the Hampton cemetery and Ricky asked about him; saying that sure was a funny name for a man to have. 28. iii. GRANVILLE LESLIE (52). iv. GRACE V. 904. HANS GEORGE10 LANTZ (3334) (Hans, #1808) was born circa 1725 at Speyer, Bavaria, Germany. He married Maria Margaretha Benderin (3335) (see #905). Per Veronica Smith, While I was in the library here, I discovered a newspaper article about the Lantz Mill. Now I've driven by the road that goes there a number of times and never once thought it connected to us, but it does. I'll type the part that relates to the Lantzes in our family tree. "Historic Lantz Mill Goes On The Market" by Elizabeth Libby, Northern Virginia Daily newspaper, Friday May 24, 1996, page 6 "...The original portion of the mill is estimated to be about 150 years old, but the community goes back much further. The first record of settlement is dated 1740. Jacob Wolfe built a fort there to protect settlers, primarily Germans, from Indians. According to Margaret R. Crabill and Nancy E. Simmons in their book, "A History of Lantz Mills," there are written records indicating the presence of Indian graves just above the mill. In 1747, Hans George Lantz left Germany and eventually made his way to Virginia, where he purchased 470 acres from Lord Fairfax. At the time, the area was called Swan Pond Hollow. The estate was handed down in the family. In 1896, Jacob Lantz inherited the family farm and mill used to grind flour and grain. There was also a sawmill there and shops. Jacob also served as a justice of the peace during the Civil War. He hid in bushes to escape capture by the Union army. The family homeplace, however, was burned and Jacob's wife died soon after. After the war, Jacob returned to the area, rebuilt the house and remarried. The home still stands, looking protectively down upon the mill. The community came into its prime in the late 1800s and early 1900s, according to Ms. Crabill and Ms. Simmons. The mill and shops encouraged other businessmen to locate in the area. A general store to the north of the mill, provided the residents with many necessities. The building burned down in 1942, but its owner also operated the mill. According to the authors, "fire, death and industrialization took its toll on the Lantz Mill community." The mill remained in operation until the early 1950s, when owners stopped using the water wheel to grind flour and just sold feed and other supplies. The mill closed for good in the early 1980s, under the ownership of four Sine brothers. "

So, it talks about Hans George Lantz and his son Jacob. I'm going back to the library tomorrow and have quite a number of books I can look at, they just aren't open long enough for me to do too much at once. I did find a nice book on the other side of my family, quite detailed. I also found Jacob Teets and Barbara Miller's marriage bond listed in Shenandoah County Virginia Marriage Bonds 1772--1850, it says: "Teats, Jacob --- Miller, Barbara. Dau. of Geo. Aug. 11, 1806." Hans George Lantz was born about 1725 and died in Shenandoah County VA in 1793. His will is dated December 7, 1792 and was probated in Shenandoah County March 12, 1793. The records of St. Michael's Evangelical church states that "Hans George Lantz, being a single young man, in good standing, living in the house of Wilhelm Wagner, married this day, December 12, 1752, Maria Margaretha Benderin, a young woman, single and of the reformed religion, having worked her indenture to Richard Wahl of Whitemarsh, was free to marry." Title: Harvard College 1643 1647, Freeman Sep 24, 1650, Ordained as colleague with Rev. John Elliot of Roxbury Burial: Governor Dudley's Tomb, Roxbury, Massachusetts Samuel, Rev., bapt. October 17, 1626, came with his father in 1634 to Cambridge and graduated with the second class from Harvard in 1643; on the first Board of Fellows in 1650. He married Mary Wilson, November 5, 1651, daughter of Rev. John Wilson, Boston's first pastor, and was the progenitor of illustrious descendants. From 1650 to 1674, Rev. Danforth was the ordained pastor of Roxbury Church where the Rev. John Eliot was the teacher. In 1651, the town record states, the inhabitants of Roxbury raised œ50 for a house for their pastor. The homes of the apostle Eliot and the venerable Danforth were situated on either side of the Greyhound Tavern. Mr. Danforth's sermons were usually "enriched with 40 to 50 passages of scriptures and his emotional sermons are said to have brought frequent tears to the eyes of listeners." In addition to his fame as a preacher, he was a noted scholar, poet, astronomer, and skilled mathematician and theologian. He purchased the estate of Samuel Hagborne and in 1657 purchased Captain Joseph Weld's house where he lived until his death in Roxbury, November 19, 1674. His widow married Joseph Roche of Boston and died September 13, 1713, at 80.

* A Letter Out of Grief by Samuel Danforth [In 1659 an unknown disease, perhaps pertussis, swept through several towns in New England. Samuel Danforth, minister at Roxbury, lost all three of his children to the epidemic. Some time later he was asked by friends to put on paper some of the words he spoke at their funeral. This is the letter he wrote in reply.] My Friends: If any that see my grief should say to me, as the Danites to Micah, 'What is wrong with you?' I thank God I cannot answer as he did, 'They have taken away my gods.' My heart was indeed somewhat set upon my children, especially the eldest; but they were not my gods and not my portion; my portion is whole and untouched to this day. It has been my design and work to understand for myself, and to communicate to my hearers the spiritual meaning, extent and nature of gospel obedience. I have employed much reading and study to expound what faith, hope, love, patience, etc., the glorious wisdom, power and mercy of God oblige us to render to him. What I have endeavoured to set forth before you, God will now test. Both God and you will see whether they were mere notions and speculations, or whether I believed as I spoke, and whether there is any divine spark in my heart. I remember him that said to Abraham, 'By this I know that you fear me, that you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.' It is the pleasure of God that (besides all that may be gained by reading, and studying, and preaching) I should learn and teach obedience by the things that I suffer. The holy fire is not to be fetched for you, out of such a flint as I am, without smiting. Not long before these strokes descended upon us, it pleased God marvellously to quicken our hearts (both mine and my wife's) and to stir up in us most earnest desires after himself. Now that he has taken our children, we pray that he will he draw us into freer and fuller communion with himself, blessed be his holy name! I trust the Lord has done what he has done in wisdom, and faithfulness, and dear love. I trust that in taking these pleasant things from me, he exercises and expresses the same tender affection to me, as I now express towards my children in mourning for the loss of them. I desire, with Ephraim,'to bemoan myself,' etc. Jer. 31:18, 19. O that I might hear the Lord answering me as he did ver. 20! ['I will surely have mercy on him, says the Lord.'] It is right to say to God, 'We have endured chastisement, we will not offend; what we see not, teach us; and if we have done iniquity, we will do so no more.' Though we cannot reproach ourselves with any known way of disobedience, we

Page 29 John Jay Teets II, ([email protected]), (http://johnteets.com), Dec 21, 2011 know there is enough in us to justify his repeated strokes. God knows much more. My desire is that no one may be overly dismayed at what has happened to us; and let no man by any means be offended. Who may say to the Lord, 'What are you doing?' I can say from my heart, though what is come upon us is very dreadful and amazing, nevertheless I consent unto the will of God that it is good. Does not the goldsmith cast his metal into the furnace? And you husbandmen, do you not cause the flail to pass over your grain, not that you hate your wheat, but because you desire pure bread? Had our children been insolent when we corrected them, we could not have borne it; but, poor hearts, they honoured us; how much rather should we be subject to the Father of spirits, and live! You know that, nine years ago, I was in a desolate condition -without father, without mother, without wife, without children: but what a father, and mother, and wife have been bestowed upon me, and are still continued, though my children are taken away. And, above all, although I cannot deny but that it pierces my very heart to call to remembrance the voice of my dear children, calling 'father, father!' a voice now not heard: yet I bless God it does far more abundantly refresh me and cause me to rejoice to hear the Lord continually calling to me, 'My son, my son! My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest His correction; for whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.' And blessed be God that does not ignore the anguish of the afflicted, nor hide his face from him. It was the consideration that God had sanctified and glorified himself, by striking an holy awe and dread of his majesty into the hearts of his people, that made Aaron hold his peace: and if the Lord will glorify himself by my family, by these awful strokes upon me, quickening parents unto their duty, and awakening their children to seek after the Lord, I shall desire to be content, though my name be cut off. I beseech you be earnest with the Lord for us, that he would keep us from sinning against him; and that he would teach us to sanctify his name. Although our dear branches have left us, yet that he that has promised to be with his children in six troubles and in seven will not forsake us. My heart truly would be consumed, and would even die within me, except that the good will of him that dwelt in the burning bush, and his good word of promise, are my trust and stay.

15360. REV. NICHOLAS14 DANFORTH (3056) (Thomas, #30720) was born in 1586. He was born on Mar 1, 1588/89 at New Street Farm, Framllingham, England. He was baptized on Mar 1, 1588/89. He married Elizabeth Symmes (3044) (see #15361) on Feb 11, 1617/18 at Roxbury, Massachusetts. He died on Apr 8, 1638 at Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts. RES. GROTON MA 1634-DEATH Nicholas Danforth was the son of (? - April 20, 1620), grandson of Nicholas Danforth (? - November 12, 1585), and the fifth generation of William Danforth, all of whom were born, died, and were buried in Framlingham, Suffolk, England. He also was born in Framlingham in 1589, was baptized there on March 1, 1589 and died in Cambridge, Massachusetts in April 1638. He married Elizabeth (Symmes?), who died February 22, 1628, and was buried in Framlingham. in his Memorablia,II 59, describes him as "a gentleman of such estate and repute in the world that it cost him a considerable sum to escape the knight-hood which King Charles I imposed on all of so much per annum; and of such a figure and esteem in the church that he procured that famous lecture at Framlingham, where he had a fine manour; which lecture was kept by Mr. Burroughs and other noted ministers in their turn; to whom especially he proved a Gaius, and especially when the Laudian fury scotched them." In Framlingham the parish register and records indicate that Nicholas was one of its leading citizens and that he became a church warden in 1622. This was a most important position as these wardens made the assessments on all properties of the townspeople, collected the taxes, and performed many other secular duties now carried out by local governmental bodies. He also was a member of the "Court Baron of Burrough Lect Jury," according to the records for the year 1629. In 1937, Dr. Edward P. Danforth, of White Plains, New York, while doing postgraduate work in England spent a weekend at the old Danforth home-site, being received by the townspeople with great interest and a warm reception. He reports: "The old Danforth manor house, with a now dry moat around it, still stands, and was, at that time, being occupied by a retired brewer and his family. He was a bit of a country gentleman farmer with several tenant farm houses on the estate..." In the summer of 1969, Mr. Charles Danforth Saggus, of Augusta, Georgia, made a two day visit to Framlingham, conferred with the present Rector of Saint Michael's Church and called on Miss Hilda Fulcher, who owns the old sixteenth century New Street Farm, which he was told had been the former property of Nicholas Danforth. Apparently this farm was one of the "tenements" of "closes," of which Nicholas owned several. In 1634, when 45 years of age, Nicholas Danforth left Framlingham, England, and arrived at Boston, Massachusetts on the good ship Griffin, accompanied by his three sons, Thomas, Samuel, and Jonathan and his three daughters, Anna, Lydia, and Elizabeth, all of whom had been born and baptized in Framlingham. His reasons for leaving England are not known but it is surmised that he was influenced by the death of his wife five years before; the desire to escape the knighthood offered by King

Charles !; and because, he being a Puritan, the heat was on him and those other non-conformists, who could not stomach the manner in which the church was being administered by the powerful bishops, supported by the Popish kings. Nicholas Danforth left Boston soon after his arrival and took up residence at Cambridge, Massachusetts, where at once he became prominent in the affairs of the community. He is mentioned in the town records of 1635 as a proprietor and freeman (meaning eligible for Colonial office and to vote on matters of general government). The same and the following year he purchased several parcels of land. He made his house on what is now Bow Street, near Mount Auburn Street. "He was chosen a deputy or representative of the General Court in 1635." On March 3, 1635-36 he was with others deputed to set out the bounds of the newe plantacon above Charles Ryver (Concord). The Committe made its report April 13, 1636. In September following he was appointed to a similar duty to measure and sett the boundaries of Roxbury and to sett those between Dedham and Dorchester. When the important committee to take order for a college at Newtown, November 20, 1637, Mr. Danforth was one of those selected. Another land boundary was submitted to him with associates, 6 (1) 1637-38. He was also one of eleven men (one to a town_ whom the Court, by its vote of March 12, 1637-38, allowed to sell wine and strong water----. No one else to sell by retail without liscence from the council, so great was pressure to provide places where these articles could be bought and so many the abuses of the retail traffic, that they sought to place the traffic in the hands of their first citizens." The Society of Colonial Wars in its publication (New York 1898) lists Nicholas Danforth (1585-1638) as a captain in the Pequot War of 1637. The disposition of Nicholas Danforth's property is not clearly revealed by the records but minutes of the proprietors and the recorded wills of his sons indicate that his children were the principal heirs. Nicholas was the first Danforth to come to America. He emmigrated in February 1635/36 (or 1631) on the "Griffin" Deputy to the General Court, 1636 - 1637.. NICHOLAS DANFORTH of Framlingham, Suffolk, England, was a man of position, with influence in civil and church affairs. Though a Puritan with religious convictions, there is nothing on record to indicate that he was persecuted because of them. He was a church warden and a generous tither. Cotton Mather said of him, "He was a gentleman of such estate and repute in the world, that it cost him a considerable sum to escape the knighthood which King Charles I imposed on all of so much per annum". He was the founder of the Framlingham Lecture in Suffolk "where he had a fine mannour". The wife of Nicholas is believed to have been Elizabeth, daughter of William Symmes, a minister of Canterbury, and sister of Rev. Zachariah Symmes, the long-time minister of Charlestown, Ma. Together on the Griffin in 1634 coming to New England were Rev. Symmes, his wife and six children; Rev. John Lothrop and family, later minister at Scituate; and William and Anne Hutchinson and their family. Nicholas, now nearly fifty years of age, may have been influenced by them to leave his comfortable home in East Anglia where his wife Elizabeth had recently died, in 1629, and join them on the Griffin, bringing with him his six young children. The Griffin was a ship of some 300 tons carrying "about 100 passengers and cattle for the plantations", arriving in Boston September 18, 1634. Although not sworn a freeman until March 3, 1636, Mr. Danforth was chosen a "townsman" (selectman) of New- Towne and re-elected in 1636 and 1637, serving until his death in April, 1638. In December, 1635, he and two others were appointed to build a bridge or causeway at the southerly end of present Dunster street "down to the low water mark" to accommodate the patrons of the ferry, and to set up a broad ladder on the farther side of the river for convenience in landing. He often served as surveyor for the town and colony, helping to "sett out the bounds" of Concord, of Roxbury in 1636, and in 1637 to establish the boundary between Dedham and Dorchester. He resided on what is now Bow street near Mount Auburn street, New Towne, and served as a deputy to the General Court, attending five sessions in 1636 and 1637. These sessions gave the town its present name of Cambridge and made the first recorded appropriation for public education in New England, œ400 for the establishment of Harvard College. He was selected as one of eleven men given the responsibility of selling at retail "strong water", an early effort to place the sale of liquor in the hands of leading citizens. Historians have been generous in their praise of Nicholas Danforth and his noted sons. One wrote, "He was the progenitor of a family in New England ...... more than ordinarily distinguished in their day and generation, and whose name, honorable alike in Church and State (has been) the ornament and the oracle of each of the learned Professions in turn." Another called him the "founder of a veritable dynasty."

After sailing to America in 1635/36 aboard thE Griffin, he settled in Framlingham Massachusetts. Before his death he served as representative to the General Assembly from 1636-7.

Nicholas Danforth was a beneficiary by the will of his maternal grandfather, Thomas Sudbury, in 1606. He was the executor of his father's will, church warden of St. Michael's at Framlingham in 1622 and on a "Borough Leet Jury" in 1629. His position as church warden proves that in 1622 he was a member in good standing in the Established English Church. It is said that King CHarles I wanted to impose knighthood on Nicholas because his annual income was so high. No information is available about the date of his emigration nor of the ship he sailed on. Because he paid an English tax late in 1634 and his earliest recorded appearance in New England was October 1635, it is probably more accurate that he emigrated in 1635. On 6 March 1637/8 he was ordered to survey land and on 12 March he was appointed to supply the demand for strong drink in Cambridge. However, at their meeting on 2 May, less than two months, later, reference was made to his death, and the court appointed a successor to complete the survey earlier required of him. The Boston records say he died in April 1638 and the Cambridge records agree, so he may even have died in Boston while attending a session of the court. No will has been found for him nor has a distribution of his estate been found.

FRAMLINGHAM, ten miles north of Woodbridge, has been centred on its magnificent Castle since the twelfth century. The original seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, it boasts a superb set of curtain-wall fortifications and a series of towers topped by ornamental Tudor chimney stacks. Footpaths Crisscross the surrounding moat, while from the internal wall walkways, there are sweeping views across town to the imposing redbrick mass of Framlingham College. Of the rest of the castle, where Mary Tudor was proclaimed Queen of England in 1553, very little else survives; you'll get just as much sense of its dimensions from the outdoor tables of the Castle Inn, by the main entrance. One other point of interest, however, lies in the local parish church of St Michael, just behind the pub, which contains a lovely hammer-beam roof, fan coving and a fantastic collection of Classical sixteenth-century tombs belonging to the Howard family who owned the castle at the time.

The town below the castle makes for an enjoyable hour or two's amble, especially since the elongated Market Hill Is equipped Crown Hotel, a traditional sixteenth-century inn with roaring fires.

Genealogy of the Danford family Letter written by Thomas W. Emerson to his sister, Maria Emerson Wright – dated 20 Oct 1920 - found at the Barnesville, Belmont Co., OH Genealogical Society.

I am enclosing a copy of minutes of researches of D. L. Thornberry, Attorney….into the Genealogy of the Danford family. You will note that Mr. Thornberry has traced the Genealogy of the family back through the male line for about 450 years, without a break. Starting on the data you gave him, and a hint from me, several years ago, tracing the family back to New Jersey, he managed to bridge the record across the Atlantic to Framingham, England, from which the difficulties probably melted nicely as they have a way of doing under the influence of American grit and dollars.

Anyway, you will notice that our family record goes back clean to the definite date 1512, when William Danford died at Framingham, this makes interesting reading for one who reads between the lines, as my kiddie and I have been trying to do. In a family of long-lived people it’s considerably safe to guess that William was not younger than 50 at his death – probably considerably more. That figure would bring his birth back to 1462.

As social conditions were in England in those days, I can’t figure out a happy lot for William and Isabel and their five nestlings. There were 3 classes of people, the Churchmen, the Nobility and the Commonalty. The nobles owned the land, and the common people were tenants with only such rights as their superiors chose to allow. The commoner was loaded down with the burden of supporting the Huge Ecclesiastical machine, and the noble with all their military ambitions; and by the time the commoner paid his church tithes and duties and put up for the keep of a luxurious aristocracy, with a royal establishment at the head, he hadn’t a bounteous leaving for himself and family

Anyway, William and Isabel lacked many things we deem everyday necessities of life. They never heard of coffee or tea, for it was only 150 years later, after his death, that the Arabian bean found its way only to England, and tea was a few years later still. Their great-great-grandson Nicholas, died in America 126 years later without a first cup of tea; but it is more probably that some of the said Nicholas’s seven children had some hundreds of great-great-grandchildren in and around Boston 136 years still later, when a Famous tea-party was pulled off: and you know it is a family trait to participate in everything that is going on.

Neither did William and Isabel have any corn, potatoes, tomatoes, tobacco, turkeys, or a host of other luxuries which the old world was to get from the new, since the new world was not discovered until William was some 30 years old, and little or nothing was ever known of it until long after his death. It was still India when he died. Neither he nor his good wife Isabel ever hear of Columbus or his discovery, for neither he nor she would read nor write, nor anyone else in Framingham, perhaps, excepting the parish priest. Why should they, since there was nothing to read and even less to write. True, printing had been invented: A German named Gutenberg, over on the Rhine, when William was a boy of about 12, had rigged up some wooden types and a press, and had worked off a book called the “Catholicon” and when he was about 24 an Englishman named Caxton had set up a press and run off the “History of Troy.”

(Illigible-DE)…hundreds of thousands of descendants many of whom we have probably met without either ourselves or themselves knowing who they were. We have only Nicholas rescued from the common oblivion.

Page 43 John Jay Teets II, ([email protected]), (http://johnteets.com), Dec 21, 2011

Of Nicholas we need only observe that he lived through the short reign of Edward VI, and the bloody catholic re-action when poor deluded Mary undertook to turn back the tide, and died in the 25th year of “The Good Queen Bee” when the Faith of generations of his ancestors had been supplanted permanently by the new religion from Germany.

Nicholas saw common people develop from mere lieges to real men and women owning land in their own right, many of the men and possibly a few of the women able to read and write, and about all of them able and willing to take a hand in political affairs – which generally meant religious affairs – and all of them entitled to have opinions of their own on almost any subject, and quite ready and willing to express them. I imagine this Nicholas accumulated a patch of land in his own right, for we find that his eldest son, Thomas, a “Yeoman” – a free and lawful man” who owned “free land” of 40 shillings annual value, which made him a “free holder” competent to vote, to sit on juries, and do numerous things William and Paul could not do. In short, the Danford family is becoming interesting – especially the eldest sons.

Thomas Danford, Yeoman, is a real somebody, worthy to have the exact date of his marriage recorded, two years after the death of his father. We recognize him as a somebody of importance by the fact of his marriage to Jane, daughter of Thomas Sudbury of Kenshall – note the “of Kenshall.” It was a big thing to own land of your very own, in those days, quite an important matter if it was worth 40 shillings a year, we don’t think it any great matter in this country; but this is not England in Tudor times….

Nicholas Danford, son of Thomas and Jane, cut a considerable figure in the old world and in the new. Born in the brilliant period of English History, a contemporary of Burleigh, Raleigh, Shakespeare and that great age of giants which makes “The Elizabethan Era” memorable for all time, he lived through reign of the first thick – headed Stewarts, James, and into that of his stubborn, short-sighted son, Charles. Nicholas was doubtless an educated man, as I gather from his record on this side of the Atlantic, a Cambridge man. He was clear-visioned. He saw the gradual development of the contest between brave Englishmen went on preserving their rights and liberties and the royal chump who sought to set back the hands of the clock by restoring the despotism of the early tudors; and he noted that the back bone of that political resistance was the religious fanaticism called puritianism. So Nicholas was Puritan. He foresaw the coming storm, and 8 years before it broke, on the death of his wife, he gathered his flock of seven children, and emigrated to the Puritan Colony in the new world known as Massachusetts Bay Colony, wherein were the towns of Salem and Boston, and where there were growing Puritan settlements spreading back in land some miles and older one south called Plymouth Colony, only 14 years old…..

You will observe that I do not look upon this genealogy as being merely the history of a family…but I regard it as a history of American in skeleton, covering 316 years when American History was made in Europe, down to that fateful day in July 144 years ago, when our ancestors of that day ceased to be English and decreed that they and their posterity should henceforth be Americans – and still are, thank heaven, even if some of American birth but English minds, would tie us back again to the old world and its stogy ideals. In preserving our independence results in “breaking the heart of the world.” I am about heartless enough to let her break; altho I am very skeptical about all this theoretical Tom Follery. As far as I am able to observe, the supposed “heart of the world” beats very much as it had done for 5 centuries, and I am unable to perceive by what authority an American official sworn to support, maintain and defend the Constitution of the United States, thereby, becomes the guardian of this alleged world heart treasure. Indeed, there is quite a lot of rhetorical slush we have been fed upon for the past seven years which I am wholly unable to translate into Missourian – and it is a safe test that any language which will not translate into the showdown dialect of Missouri is short on common sense, and belongs in the class one Paul of Tarsus characterized as “sounding brass and tinkling cymbals.” I am weary unto Nausea of “watchful waiting” “punitive expeditions” “self-determination” ”freedom of the seas” “open covenants” “Liberty” “Motors that fail to note, a world safe for Democracy” which is plainly headed for despotism, and all that long line of rhetorical flim-flam which commenced when one “Doctor” William Bayard Hale, later “My personal representative” and later German spy, published that :Batch” of beautiful slush under the heading “The New Freedom.” Do you remember it all? I am unable to foresee how historians will characterize this last 8 year period, but it would be hard to find a better name for it the “Era of tommy-rot”.

We are having real winter, nearly a foot of snowfall. This is the second one in October. The first occurrence of this time in my 30 years. Snow is said to be 4 ft deep at redmt. 12 south of here.
