4 5 ‘ KERRIER’S BEACHES Trethow Keryer Do you swim, surf or play in the sea at one our beaches?

Have you ever wondered how clean the water is?

Well, the really good news is that the quality of water at Kerrier’s main beaches is frequently monitored during the summer. More importantly it regularly meets the highest standards set by the European Bathing Water Directive.

For 2007, we’d like to share this information and we can now email the water quality results directly to individuals. This information is provided in an easy-to-read table format that provides more detail about water testing and also gives historical results. If you would like to receive a weekly update about the quality of water at your local beach please email us at [email protected] and we’ll add you to our new mailing list.

The beaches that are monitored include: Church Cove () Porthallow Coverack Kennack Sands Porthoustock Poldhu Polurrian

Naturally, email addresses that you provide will only be used for providing information about bathing water quality in Kerrier and will not be passed to any other organisation.

For more information about bathing water quality please see the Council’s website.

Diskudhewgh Gwithti Gwerin Hellys ‘In the mornings when I am doing my rounds, I can see this view from one of the stairways, and I am particularly fond of it. There has been a recent housing development in what was Jewson’s Yard, and it has been fascinating watching it take shape, and now I can see people sitting on their balconies or hanging out their washing. Other than this, the view is mostly unchanged in my lifetime’. Janet Spargo, manager of Helston Folk Museum Early Learning Area We chose a kitchen theme for this area, to complement our strong domestic section, and so that children could see the difference in today’s colourful kitchens with light utensils compared to the Victorian dark and heavy items. It is well-used by young children who can often be seen making mock cups of tea and meals for their visitors!

We hope to expand this further this year with feely bags and art materials.

A great way for young people to fi nd their way around the Museum is to have a go at the free permanent colour trail for very young children or the free Summer Trail worksheet for children aged 4-12. “Toy Department Upstairs” For more than fi fty years this sign was seen hanging in Eddy’s Toy Shop in Meneage Street. Eddy’s and Sons have been in business in Helston for over one hundred and forty-fi ve years, so has been a part of everyone’s lives. The store closed in March, and we have been lucky enough to have the sign installed in the museum. It now shows the way to our Boys’ and Girls’ Toy Shop display, and will continue to delight the eye! 8 9 DOWN THE MINE... Down y’n bal

During May, it was national Museums & Galleries Month. Helston Museum held four very successful events during the month, one on each Saturday. The theme this year was “Mining” and in the photograph former miner Mark Kaczmarek, who entertained his audience with fascinating tales from his days down the mine.

Helston is a former coinage town, which does not mean that it produced its own coinage, but that it held the right to assay the blocks of tin. The tin had to be brought to certain centres (in Helston that was the Coinage Hall) for the collection of taxes on the tin. If it reached the required standard, it was stamped with the duchy arms as a guarantee of its quality. There were fi ve coinage towns in , , , and Helston.

About a hundred mines were worked in the Helston district, reaching their peak in the early 19th century.

Although principally worked for tin, copper was also found in some Diskudhewgh Gwithti mines, as well as a few lead mines, some of which had a high content Gwerin Hellys of silver. Today, this is recalled in the names of Higher and Lower Silver Hill in the Godolphin Road area of Helston. Indeed, Godolphin Road is named after the Godolphin family, who were owners of the largest mine in the area, , which was likened “ unto a mint” for that family as it was so successful!

The mining section in Helston Museum holds many fascinating items, including an original set of miner’s candles, as well as hot marks for tin.

10 11 THE FITNESS STUDIO WHAT’S IN A NAME? An Studio Yaghter

When we hear the word ‘GYM’ many people conjure up the image of large muscle bound men sweating and grunting! This image often puts most people off even considering the notion of stepping through the door. For those of you who are now nodding in agreement it may be a surprise to hear that modern Fitness Studios (posh name for gym!) are far from this!

The Fitness Studio at Helston Sports Centre was added to the facilities over 7 years ago. Since then it has seen many different people from all walks of life, shape, size, age & ability come through its doors. Some people come along for the obvious reasons – to loose weight, improve their fi tness and improve their sporting activity. But the gym isn’t just about breaking into a sweat. Some people come because they enjoy the social side, meeting new people and sharing stories, others have come along because regular physical activity has improved their quality of life.

One member in particular has felt the benefi ts of our Fitness studio. John started at the centre approximately 6 months ago, he was referred to us through our Fresh Start GP Referral Scheme. John suffered a stroke 2 years ago which resulted in paralysis of his right arm and leg. He says that since coming to the gym he feels he has progressed rapidly and has seen a huge improvement in the movement & function of his arm and leg. To the extent that he is now able to swim a width of the pool and has recently passed his assessment to drive again. He says “I would recommend the gymnasium to anyone and if I can do it anyone can!”

So, don’t tell yourself ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’ or ‘I’m not fi t enough to go there’, take 5 minutes to come in and speak to our fi tness team who will be happy to show you around. 12 13 SUMMER ACTIVITIES AT HELSTON SPORTS CENTRE Gwryansow Hav orth Kresenn Sportys Hellys With the holidays upon us we have some fantastic offers to get the family active during the Summer Holidays. 12 13 SPORTS OPPORTUNITIES

Chonsow yn Sportys

This year’s Over 50s Leisure Weeks were organised over a period of two weeks and once again there were many exciting activities on offer such as Archery, Sailing, Golf, Bowls, Yoga, Scuba Diving, Sea Angling and more. 350 people took part in the 115 activity sessions that were on offer. The weeks proved to be immensely popular for yet another year with most people booking onto a number of activities over the two weeks. One participant said ‘it was the best day I have ever had, I will certainly take up Lugger Sailing’ and one of the coaches at Archers of the West said ‘24 people have joined our beginner’s course following the Over 50s Leisure Weeks’.

This project gives residents aged fi fty plus in the Kerrier and Districts an opportunity to try a variety of activities free of charge. Not only do the participants enjoy trying new activities, the clubs and activity providers also benefi t by increasing awareness of their club and sport and hopefully having new members join.

Special thanks to the steering group and local activity providers, without their continued support and enthusiasm these weeks would not be possible.

If you are aged 50+ living in the Kerrier and Penwith Districts and would like to receive future information about the weeks please contact Tracey Barter at LEAPActive on 01209 310062. 14 15 WE CAN GET ACTIVE Ni a yll dos ha bos Bywek Monday 9th to Saturday 14th July 2007

26 Have you checked out the new Coronation Park yet?

Phase 1 of improvements at Coronation Park, Helston were completed early in 2007. This included the creation of a new attractive café/ amenity building, plenty of play space and the new rejuvenated skate park.

Following two years of development the northern area of the park has undergone a complete re-design, involving an expansion into the former derelict cattle market. This enabled greater fl exibility for local skaters to rethink the skate park layout, which is now considered a great success. New play areas incorporating modern and environmental play opportunities have also been created and an events space for community use and for outdoor performances such as local bands. New boats will soon be available to hire on the lake.

The accessibility of the site has been greatly increased for wheelchair users and people with visual impairment. A new safer crossing point has been created across the Porthleven Road to the Fairground car park, where there is plenty of additional parking, along with access for cycling & walks through Penrose Amenity Area and along Valley.
