By Gary Lum

ark Saturday October 13 on your calendar and join your Old Ottawa South neighbours Min beautifying your community. The park maintenance day will further the objectives of the Vegetation Management Plan and continue the work of residents who have contributed their time over the years. The Plan, which is posted on the OSCA website, calls for the removal of some young Manitoba Maples, the pruning of existing trees and the planting of native trees like oak, maple and basswood. Last spring, in an effort guided by the technical expertise of Doug Flowers of the City of Ottawa, the area from the Pump House Station up to the Bank Street Bridge was spruced up. The weather was ideal for working in the urban forest and all agreed that it was satisfying to see the immediate results of their labour. In these photos, the volunteers are clearly enjoying the workplace, as well as the work. During the upcoming October 13 session, Peter Wells will supervise a group of residents as they remove the new growth of Manitoba Maples that have sprouted up along the Rideau River from the Main Street Bridge to Brighton Park. Another group, under the supervision of Doug Flowers, will re-do the area from the Windsor Park to the entrance of Linda Thom Park. We will be meeting at the Windsor Park field house at 9 am to start off the day. You will need gloves, boots or good foot wear, and, if you have them, pruning tools. Useful tools include spades, large handled prunners, hand prunners, buck saws and pole prunners to reach high branches. Safety glasses and a water bottle are recommended. Sorry but chain saws are not permitted to be used by volunteers. Doug Flowers will be operating his chain saw but he is a professional arborist and his chain saw skills are impressive.

ABBOTSFORD HOUSE Party And Meeting Space For Rent At Abbotsford

ooking for some classy space for a formal dinner, a book-club meeting or a birthday Lparty? Newly renovated space at Abbotsford House in the Glebe is now available, and at a reasonable price. The dining room at the front of the old stone house has been renovated to fit the age and traditions of the neo-gothic style home. Sue Walker is Abbotsford’s Director of Development. She says the renovations at the house evolved over the summer. The Lord Lansdowne donated new carpeting, and that inspired staff and volunteers to get out their paint brushes. The dining room has now been restored to reflect some of the grandeur of the late 1800s. “We’ve tried to bring in some period pieces to compliment the actual era of the room. We had a lot to work with, with the original wood work and plaster,” explains Walker. Now that construction at the Lord Lansdowne tower is being completed, the front of both buildings are being tidied up and landscaped. ot what you would think of when you are getting dressed in the morning? Ramie, Linen, Cotton, Hemp, Wool, Mohair, NSilk - now thats more like it. Technology has come a long way in the fibre pool in the past ten years and members of the Ottawa Valley Weavers and Spinners Guild have been experimenting with the results. They will be sharing these exciting items at their upcoming Exhibition & Sale - ANo Animal Fibres, Please to be held November 2, 3 & 4, 2007 at the Glebe Community Centre. Once again, they will wow you with their creativity in using traditional and non-traditional methods for non-traditional fibres. There will be demonstrations using some of the wackiest fibres, an exhibition of some of these creations as well. If we can spin it, we can weave it. Members of the Ottawa Valley Weavers and Spinners Guild have a deep commitment to their community. Last year, they held a spinning/weaving marathon to weave silk scarves to raffle for the Canadian Cancer Society for Breast Cancer. In 2007, they will be creating and donating fibre articles to be sold to raise funds for their own resource centre and for the silk weavers in Kabul, Afghanistan through the ArteZan Designs Project (www.artezandesigns.com) Feel free to visit us and throw a shuttle or two to aid this worthy cause. Chances are you have seen members of the Ottawa Valley Weavers and Spinners Guild with their spinning wheels and looms, sheep and knitting needles demonstrating their craft at various venues such as City Hall, National Museum of Man, Civic Centre, Place du Portage, Nepean Sportsplex, Ottawa Public Library, National Arts Centre, Pinney’s Point, The , The Billings Estate, the Agricultural Museum and many country fairs. We love to share our craft and show the public that this is not a dying art but one that is alive and thriving. OCTOBER 2007 The OSCAR - OUR 33rd YEAR Page 47 29th Annual Brighton Avenue Clambake By Lori Pope

he 29th annual Brighton Avenue Clambake had Ta wonderful turnout on Saturday, September 15, as about 130 Brighton residents and alumni came out to enjoy good food and each others’ company. This year the organizing committee, comprised of Lorraine Cartier, John Inns, Lori Pope, Barbara Porrett, Carol- Lynne Saad, and Brian Ure, made a few changes to what was already a successful formula, including adding some live entertainment, thanks to funding by real estate agent Tracy Arnett. After the children’s meal and some clam appetizers, the Cowguy (a.k.a. Brian Wilson) entertained children and their parents. The adults tore themselves away from this very funny show long enough to load up on mussels, corn, and sausages, as well as each others’ salads and desserts. After the adults had eaten, Arthur McGregor of the Ottawa Folklore Centre brought out his guitar, his banjo, and some copies of Rise Up Singing and led a singalong that included a range of well-loved songs, from “Baby Beluga” to “The Blackfly Song” to “Green Grow the Rushes O”. Singing continued until well after sunset as participants strained to read the words by firelight and kids ran around in the dark with glow sticks – a brilliant idea by Teresa Rupar, who kindly supplied them. Another new feature this year was a photo album put together by the Clambake’s official photographer, Tom Alfoldi. To see his photos from the 2006 and 2007 clambakes, go to http://www.flickr. com/photos/tta/sets . The fire pit was ably dug and the fire started and watched over by Barbara Porrett and Phil Blagden and their helpers, including Stephan Katz who arranged for the permits and fencing. Under the guidance of James Russell, tent director emeritus, Photo and Montage by Tom Alfoldi Richard Fader and Howard Rundle led the tent team. Jill Hawkins and Roger Ehrhardt again took on the task of organizing the meal for the children, who ate, drank, and left the food area to careen around Brighton Beach before settling down to watch the Cow Guy. Nikki Pora and Raun Griffiths shucked clams, John Inns, Lorraine Cartier, Brian Ure and Maureen Fallis cooked corn and mussels, and Lorraine and John barbequed the sausages, with help from Derek Hardy. Peggy Kinsley again made a huge pot of her fabulous baked beans, which were devoured quickly after they were delivered by Peter Blakeman. Peter’s parents, Bill and Sharon, in whose backyard the first clambake took place nearly 30 years ago, were there (with their clam shuckers) as was Jean Switzer, who has kindly shared her hydro and water with her neighbours for this event for many years. Despite threatening skies earlier in the day, we had no rain and by nightfall the skies were clear enough for some astronomy lessons by Cliff Halliwell, who brought out his telescope again this year.

A big thanks to Arthur McGregor, the Cow Guy, Tracy Arnett, and everyone who volunteered with set up and cleanup to make the clambake fun for everyone. Page 48 The OSCAR - OUR 33rd YEAR OCTOBER 2007
