CONSERVATION FORCE A FORCE FOR WILDLIFE CONSERVATION BENEFITS OF REGULATED HUNTING FOR LEOPARD (PANTHERA PARDUS) Legal, regulated tourist hunting of African leopard (Panthera pardus) benefits the species through mitigation of the primary threats: habitat loss and fragmentation; increased human populations leading to higher incidence of human-wildlife conflict; poaching and illegal wildlife trade; and prey base declines.i • Habitat: The threat of habitat loss is mitigated in part by fully-protected national parks, which provide over 400,000 km2 of relatively secure habitat for leopard across the six Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries that rely on regulated hunting to sustain their leopard and leopard prey populations.ii The national parks are > 30,000 km2 larger than in 1982, when the leopard was downlisted to “threatened” under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, and leopard are estimated to be present in most of the parks in Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.iii Regulated hunting revenues help cover the costs of policing these parks, which in most cases do not generate sufficient revenue to cover all enforcement expenses.iv • Habitat: The threat of habitat loss is further mitigated by areas dedicated to regulated hunting. In Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, hunting areas include government reserves, communal wildlife management areas, and private ranches. They are substantially larger than the national parks and represent over 700,000 km2.v Leopard are estimated to be present across almost all hunting areas.vi • Habitat: According to the 2016 IUCN Red List assessment of leopard, the species’ total extant range exceeds 8.5 million km2, with between 4.3 million and 6.3 million km2 of range available in Southern and East Africa. -

Big Cats in Africa Factsheet
INFORMATION BRIEF BIG CATS IN AFRICA AFRICAN LION (PANTHERA LEO) Famously known as the king of the jungle, the African lion is the second largest living species of the big cats, after the tiger. African lions are found mostly in savannah grasslands across many parts of sub-Saharan Africa but the “Babary lion” used to exist in the North of Africa including Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria, while the “Cape lion” existed in South Africa. Some lions have however been known to live in forests in Congo, Gabon or Ethiopia. Historically, lions used to live in the Mediterranean and the Middle East as well as in other parts of Asia such as India. While there are still some Asian Lions left in India, the African Lion is probably the largest remaining sub species of Lions in the world. They live in large groups called “prides”, usually made up of up to 15 lions. These prides consist of one or two males, and the rest females. The females are known for hunting for prey ranging from wildebeest, giraffe, impala, zebra, buffalo, rhinos, hippos, among others. The males are unique in appearance with the conspicuous mane around their necks. The mane is used for protection and intimidation during fights. Lions mate all year round, and the female gives birth to three or four cubs at a time, after a gestation period of close to 4 months (110 days). Lions are mainly threatened by hunting and persecution by humans. They are considered a threat to livestock, so ranchers usually shoot them or poison carcasses to keep them away from their livestock. -

This research suggests that more wild cats live near farms than people are aware of. Considering the number of wild cats living near villages, attacks on livestock and people are rare in Belize. However, conflicts between people and cats sometimes occur when cats lack food, water and habitat, when livestock is threat- ened, or when people are unaware of the benefits to living with cats. They live mainly in forests and wetlands, and hunt animals such as paca (gibnut), coatimundi, deer, peccary, birds, reptiles, and small rodents. Considering that predator reintroductions may cause local resistance, we assessed attitudes of different key actor profiles to the return of the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) to Portugal before reintroduction started in 2015. We aimed to characterize a social context from an ethnoecological perspective, including factors such as local knowledge, perceptions, emotions, and opinions. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews (n = 131) in three different protected areas and observed practices and public meetings in order to describe reintroduction contestation, emotional involvement with the species, and local perceptions about conservation. Detailed content data analysis was undertaken and an open-ended codification of citations was performed with the support of ATLAS.ti. Besides the qualitative analyses, we further explored statistic associations between knowledge and opinions and compared different geographical areas and hunters with non-hunters among key actors. Results: Local ecological knowledge encompassed the lynx but was not shared by the whole community. Both similarities and differences between local and scientific knowledge about the lynx were found. The discrepancies with scientific findings were not necessarily a predictor of negative attitudes towards reintroduction. Contestation issues around reintroduction differ between geographical areas but did not hinder an emotional attachment to the species and its identification as a territory emblem. -

Chapter 1: General introduction CHAPTER 1 General introduction 1. The African wild cat, Felis silvestris (Forster, 1780) and synonym Felis silvestris cafra (Desmarest, 1822): an overview The African wild cat (Felis silvestris) has a wide distributional range (Fig. 1.1). However there is a paucity of information on all aspects of its biology. Since the wild cat is the ancestor of the domestic cat and they can interbreed and produce fertile offspring, hybridisation with the domestic form may be the biggest threat to the survival of wild cats today (Nowell & Jackson, 1996). 1.1 Phylogenetic relations and taxonomic classification Felid classification has a long and complex history fluctuating between extremes of “splitting” and “lumping” of the species (see historical review by Werdelin in Nowell & Jackson, 1996). Even on the subspecies level there has been considerable debate between the traditional taxonomic approach and the more contemporary approach using knowledge from population biology and genetics (Nowell & Jackson, 1996). The recent revolution in sequencing of genomes and new technologies to probe DNA has lead to the development of valuable new tools and methods for investigating phylogenetic relationships. Consequently, the first clearly resolved Feliday family tree has only recently been constructed (Johnson, Eizirik, Pecon-Slattery, Murphy, Antunes, Teeling & O’Brien, 2006, O’Brien & Johnson, 2007). The 37 felid species were grouped into eight lineages by molecular analysis, consistent with observations that lineages shared morphological, biological, physiological characteristics found only in their group. The recent findings suggest that all modern cats are descended from one of several Pseudaelurus species that lived in Asia around 11 million years ago (O’Brien & Johnson, 2007).
