Here, on the last day of his life, is "The King", now ageing, bloated, pill-popping and wear­ ing a purple jumpsuit and sunglasses. He watches his old movies and fumes because one of his trusted "aides" is ex­ posing his secrets to a newspaperman. In a series of flashbacks, Elvis relives his earlier experiences, the death of the twin brother whom he believes was his alter ego and stronger half, the death of his mother while he was a GI in Ger­ many, and the adulation poured on him as the lean, sexy king of rock. HiS manager, Colonel Tom Parker, is por­ trayed as his manipulator, holding a Presley dummy and gloating over the Martin Shaw as the ageing Presley in ARE profits.     Marie Collier: a life Kim Kemmis A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History The University of Sydney 2018 Figure 1. Publicity photo: the housewife diva, 3 July 1965 (Alamy) i Abstract The Australian soprano Marie Collier (1927-1971) is generally remembered for two things: for her performance of the title role in Puccini’s Tosca, especially when she replaced the controversial singer Maria Callas at late notice in 1965; and her tragic death in a fall from a window at the age of forty-four. The focus on Tosca, and the mythology that has grown around the manner of her death, have obscured Collier’s considerable achievements. She sang traditional repertoire with great success in the major opera houses of Europe, North and South America and Australia, and became celebrated for her pioneering performances of twentieth-century works now regularly performed alongside the traditional canon. Collier’s experiences reveal much about post-World War II Australian identity and cultural values, about the ways in which the making of opera changed throughout the world in the 1950s and 1960s, and how women negotiated their changing status and prospects through that period. She exercised her profession in an era when the opera industry became globalised, creating and controlling an image of herself as the ‘housewife-diva’, maintaining her identity as an Australian artist on the international scene, and developing a successful career at the highest level of her artform while creating a fulfilling home life. This study considers the circumstances and mythology of Marie Collier’s death, but more importantly shows her as a woman of the mid-twentieth century navigating the professional and personal spheres to achieve her vision of a life that included art, work and family.

Like | @LivePerfAust | Follow | Forward VALE Dame Margaret Scott AC DBE LPA was very saddened to hear of the passing of Dame Margaret Scott AC DBE who died last week in Melbourne at the age of 96. Margaret or "Maggie" as she perferred to be called was a pioneer of Australian dance. She had been involved in most, if not all, of the major developments in dance education in Australia since the mid 1960s, including the establishment of the country’s dance organisation, Ausdance and The Australian Ballet Foundation. In 1964 she was appointed Founding Director of The Australian Ballet School and continued this role until 1990. During her time as Director she transformed the school from humble beginnings to an internationally recognised training institution discovering and nurturing elite performers. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Maggie moved to London initially accepted into the Sadler's Wells Ballet School but joined the Sadler's Wells Ballet shortly after. Dissatisfied with her prospects she resigned and successfully auditioned for Ballet Rambert. She arrived in Australia in 1947 as part of Ballet Rambert's overseas tour and chose to stay. Passionate about dance and education she was an advocate for Australian dance and taught many dancers and choreographers including Graeme Murphy AO and Meryl Tankard. Maggie changed the landscape of dance in Australia and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1977 and made a Dame in 1981. Maggie received Live Performance Australia’s James Cassius Williamson Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
