Guarneri attempts to deduce the Italian character mainly from literary examples and thus tends to treat the problem at too great a remove from every- day life. He also seems to deny the existence of such a character, given the variety and contradiction among Italians within their separate regions, classes, and occupations. From this perspective the national character has yet to be formed in the post–1945 environment, preferably in accordance with an ideal standard. In other contexts Guarneri refers to the Italian character as if it were synonymous with the moral fiber of the people. 5. Notwithstanding his frequent disparagement of Staël, for what he sees as both her novelistic failings and misrepresentation of Italy, Stendhal sometimes praises her in the highest terms and, even though never adequately acknowl- edging his indebtedness, owes much to her writings on Italy and other subjects. Besides drawing upon Staël’s dichotomy between Northern and Southern Europe, Stendhal borrows her conception of Italy as an essentially “feminine” country where society does not exist and the people therefore remain “natural.” Staël’s Italians anticipate those of Stendhal in being free from convention, vanity, affectation, coquetry, ridicule, distinctions of rank, and the embarrass- ments of poverty, in short, from the tyranny or “regard” of the “other.” In Stendhal, as in Staël, the passionate Italians delight in love and the arts and pre- fer outdoor pleasures to the indoor comforts favored in the North. Stendhal is also influenced profoundly by Staël’s idea of the irreconcilable opposition between love and vanity and her recognition of the tension between art and society. For Stendhal, as for Staël, Italian naturalness contrasts with the frigidity and conventionality of bourgeois England. Stendhal’s dislike of Staël seems to have stemmed partly from the fact that she despised and criticized his idol Napoleon, who had sent her into exile. In contrast with Stendhal, who rightly realizes that Napoleon’s despotism in Italy had imposed many liberalizing and modernizing reforms, Staël minimizes these achievements, persisting in the view that Napoleon had primarily debased, brutalized, and exploited the Italian people. In this judgment she agrees with her friend Sismondi, who, as Franco Venturi notes, wrote to her in a letter during the first decade of the nineteenth century that under Napoleon Italy had sunk into the mud. Tracking a hidden self-portrait in Savinio’s homage to Giacomo Leopardi, we encounter the problem of identity and the question of cultural belonging. This key issue seems to unite Savinio with Leopardi: both can be considered as outsiders within their culture, and this status appears to be globally connected with their modernity. Thus, dealing with Savinio and Leopardi promises to provide further understanding of “anti-modern” Italian culture from its margins. Franco Sbarberi Abstract: Benedetto Croce taught Norberto Bobbio to distinguish between two kinds of commitment, namely an intellectual and a political one. The expression “politica della cultura” effectively translates the idea of the autonomy or independence of scholarly and intellectual research. Another idea which was passed on from Croce to Bobbio is that of liberalism as the theoretical basis of every form of civil government insofar as the liberal conception rejects any notion of “Providence” as a covert agent of history. But Bobbio differed from Croce since he never believed that democracy could essentially contradict the perspective of liberalism, and was convinced that true emancipation is a sort of “conguagliamento delle libertà,” or, in other words, that it implies a strong relation between individual political rights and the demands of social justice. In the Preface to a bibliography of his writings that was published in 1984, Bobbio made reference to a “half-score” of his preferred authors. For the early modern period the selection seemed “almost inevitable” as far as the names of Hobbes, Locke, Kant, and Hegel were concerned. For more contempo- rary authors, on the other hand, he specifically singled out Croce, Cattaneo, Kelsen, Pareto, and Weber since they all represented, at one point or another, a crucial point of reference either for his own political development or for the considerable range of his intellectual interests (which also show him to have been a subtle analyst and systematic interpreter of the classic writers).

ABSTRACT Neoliberalism arose from classical liberalism, which was believed in individual liberty, equal opportunity, and private property should administer by individual ‘law of nature’ while the ‘law of state’ regarded as a ‘necessary evil’. When neoliberalism had emerged in 1970s, it replaced the theories of Keynesianism, which targeted state regulation on the economic policy; towards a more ‘monetarist’ individual self-regulating and ‘market law’ approach. This “Individual against all” approach of neoliberalism led the mass to live like slaves in slavery age and peasants in feudalism. Then economic crises aggravated and the ‘law of identity’ emerged or neoliberalism shifted towards all against all approaches of neo-populism. This paper explores the neoliberal law of the individual over the mass and its practical failure; next it discusses all against all laws of neo-populism and its threats. In the end, it provides the missing laws of both the ‘neo-neo’ approaches as a solution anda concluding remark.     What Was ‘The Enlightenment’? We hear about it all the time. It was a pivotal point in European history, paving the way for centuries of history afterward, but what was ‘The Enlightenment’? Why is it called ‘The Enlightenment’? Why did the period end? The Enlightenment Period is also referred to as the Age of Reason and the “long 18th century”. It stretched from 1685 to 1815. The period is characterized by thinkers and philosophers throughout Europe and the United States that believed that humanity could be changed and improved through science and reason. Thinkers looked back to the Classical period, and forward to the future, to try and create a trajectory for Europe and America during the 18th century. It was a volatile time marked by art, scientific discoveries, reformation, essays, and poetry. It begun with the American War for Independence and ended with a bang when the French Revolution shook the world, causing many to question whether ideas of egalitarianism and pure reason were at all safe or beneficial for society. Opposing schools of thought, new doctrines and scientific theories, and a belief in the good of humankind would eventually give way the Romantic Period in the 19th century. What is Enlightenment? Philosopher Immanuel Kant asked the self-same question in his essay of the same name. In the end, he came to the conclusion: “Dare to know! Have courage to use your own reason!” This was an immensely radical statement for this time period. Previously, ideas like philosophy, reason, and science – these belonged to the higher social classes, to kings and princes and clergymen.

This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract In this brief consideration of mine, trying to remain as faithful as possible to the texts taken into exam, I will first try to introduce the concept of history as contemporary history in the thinking of Benedetto Croce, whereas the second part of the reasoning will point toward proving and medi- tating on how such concept crosses the whole philosophical system of the Italian intellectual. What does contemporary history mean according to Benedetto Croce? Why is the spirit of the historian fundamental in the description of this concept? What kind of connection exists between story and contemporary history? What does pathology of history mean? How does the concept of contem- porary history relate to that of awareness, of finished and thinking? These are but a few of the questions to which I tried to find an answer with this essay.     1 Historical Studies in Education / Revue d’histoire de l’éducation ARTICLES / ARTICLES Colonization, Education, and the Formation of Moral Character: Edward Gibbon Wakefield’s A Letter from Sydney Bruce Curtis Carleton University ABSTRacT Edward Gibbon Wakefield proposed a scheme of “systematic colonization” that he claimed would guarantee the formation of civilized moral character in settler societies at the same time as it reproduced imperial class relations. The scheme, which was first hatched after Wakefield read Robert Gourlay’s A Statistical Account of Upper Canada, inverted the dominant under- standing of the relation between school and society. Wakefield claimed that without systematic colonization, universal schooling would be dangerous and demoralizing. Wakefield intervened in contemporary debate about welfare reform and population growth, opposing attempts to enforce celibacy on poor women and arguing that free enjoyment of “animal liberty” made women both moral and beautiful. RÉSUMÉ Edward Gibbon Wakefield propose que son programme de « colonisation systématique » ga- rantirait la formation de colons au caractère moral et civilisé. Ce programme, né d’une pre- mière lecture de l’oeuvre de Robert Gourlay, A Statistical Account of Upper Canada, contri- buerait à reproduire la structure des classes sociales impériales dans les colonies. Received December 29th, 2009 Béla Mester Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Institute for Philosophical Research, Etele út 59-61, HU–1119 Budapest [email protected] Censorship as a Typographical Chimera John Milton and John Locke on Gestures1 Abstract The aim of my paper is to show some elements in Milton’s and Locke’s political writin­ gs, depending on their attitudes to different media. Milton in his argumentation against censorship must demonstrate that all the ancient instances for censorship, usually cited in his century, can be interpreted as examples of another phenomenon. However, Milton, analysing loci of Plato’s Republic and some Scriptural topics, recognises the scope and significance of non­conceptual, non­printed, non­verbal forms of communication; he des­ cribes them as signs of childish, female or uneducated behaviours, as valueless phenomena from the point of view of political liberty incarnated in the freedom of press. John Locke’s attitude is the same. I will show a chain of ideas, similar to Milton’s one, in his Two Tracts on Government and in his Epistola de tolerantia, focusing the analyses on the concept of adiaphora (indifferent things). However, Milton was not a researcher of the media, and his aim in his booklet was not an analysis of homo typographicus’ thought on the freedom of thought itself, depended on the medium of the printed book; his thinking inevitably met the links between our ideals on the freedom of thought and different media by which we express them.
