The past year has been massive for education. The fundamental role teachers play in our society as the guardians of our most valuable taonga – children – has had almost unprecedented visibility in the media and in our communities. In part, this comes down to education being a focus in the 2017 election and the timing of all the collective agreement negotiations. It is also clear that nearly a decade of ‘squeeze and measure’ has damaged our once world beating education system, and as a result, the public has truly caught on to what we have been saying for years. Accordingly, the need for professional support and opportunities which guarantee we can develop our skills, working conditions that support us to be the best we can be, and remuneration that attracts and retains top quality people have underpinned much of our work over the past year. The latter half of 2017 saw the development of our approach to the 2018 Secondary Teachers’ Collective Agreement negotiations, the corollary development of our aspirational ‘Bring out the Best’ campaign, the creation of an administrative hub to support the funding of Subject Associations….oh, and a new government.   • International School Trips: a Critical Analysis of Multiple Stakeholder Perspectives
    INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TRIPS: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF MULTIPLE STAKEHOLDER PERSPECTIVES Margie Campbell-Price A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand 2014 ABSTRACT For many decades school groups have actively engaged in experiences outside the classroom. More recently, school-led tourism has expanded to include international school trips especially undertaken by schools in developed, (Western), neoliberal nations. Whilst these trips traditionally focused on foreign language and cultural learning they have diversified to include a wide range of curriculum-related subjects and extra-curricular activities. However, the growth in participation in these trips has not been matched by academic attention or analysis. This thesis addresses the dearth of research by exploring the justifications, motivations and experiences behind international school trips and how learning is perceived and positioned within these trips. The inclusion of the active voice of multiple stakeholders (i.e., young people, their parents and school leaders) is a new way of appraising international school trip experiences. This qualitative study involved twenty-three focus group interviews (six with parents, nine with young people and eight with school leaders), carried out in six New Zealand secondary schools that had groups either preparing for or recently returned from an international trip. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data and three global themes relating to the aim of the thesis were identified. The findings corroborate the existing literature that learning is an integral part of international field trips and illustrate a detailed understanding of the nature of learning within these experiences. All three stakeholder groups used learning, at least in part, to justify taking part in these experiences.

The economic impact of the COVID-19 health crisis on the hotel industry is estimated to be nine times greater than the September 11th terrorist attacks. According to Oxford Economics, nearly 4 million hotel employees have been furloughed and the industry is expected to lose nearly fifty percent of its total revenue in 2020 – which could exceed $112 Billion. From the beginning of this health and economic crisis, we have been focused on two main objectives: first, supporting and retaining hotel employees as demand has diminished; and second, saving the U.S. network of local hotels, the majority of which are small businesses. The hotel industry relies on a dedicated and talented hospitality workforce and is hopeful that we can restart the economy so that we can restore these critical jobs. However, if hotels across this country are insolvent and default on their loan obligations, then we will not be successful in retaining hotel employees. Hotel employees and local hotel owners have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic through no fault of their own.
