  • You Go Ahead, Cause Its Making Me Laugh... by Fausto Sala - Vice President FISSC
Year Number Jan - Mar 2 1 2012 You go ahead, cause its making me laugh... by Fausto Sala - Vice President FISSC “Olimpico” stadium in Rome, Sunday 5 February 2012. Around the 20 minute of the first half of Roma-Inter in South stand appeared a banner which read: “All at 15: the nature of things, by nature force”. As everybody knows the match was scheduled to be played on Saturday at 20.45, then anticipated at 15 and at last moved at the same time on Sunday, in contemporary with all other matches in serie A as the tradition was back in the past. Thus the roman fans wanted to underline this fact and their consent for the traditional shcedule of matches, remarking as only the snow emergency had forced the hands of those in command to revert to old habits of italian football fans. We can repeat until boredom that playing at night in the coldest days of the year is madness. Yet since January 18 up to February 5, between league and national cup, 21 matches at night have been programmed and out of these 19 in the north between Bergamo, Milan, Torino or Novara. But you think that who decides does not know such facts? But more the Lega is criticised, and more who guides the Lega continues to be bend to the will of the television networks who now have absolute power to decide the time in which games are playes, having tv rights now constitute the main income for the clubs. Thus the only concern of the Lega in these last seasons, whose president Maurizio Beretta has resigned since March of last year since he now passed to a top managerial post within UniCredit, was to see how to divide between the clubs the income coming from these rights with the consequent effect of half-empty stadiums to the benefit of sitting in cosy armchairs and sofas at home.

For more detailed factual information, and in-depth competition statistics, please refer to the matchweek press kit, which can be downloaded at: http://www.uefa.com/uefa/mediaservices/presskits/index.html Match background After an absence of two years, 1996 winners Juventus are back in the UEFA Champions League hoping to make up for lost time. Their first contest brings them up against FC Zenit St. Petersburg, who, less than three weeks after adding the UEFA Super Cup to last season's UEFA Cup triumph, will be hoping to make a similar impact in Europe's top club competition. • Before their enforced relegation to Serie B as a consequence of the sporting fraud scandal which hit Italian football two years ago, Juventus achieved successive quarter-final appearances in the UEFA Champions League between 2004/05 and 2005/06. They won their group in both seasons and also in 2003/04. In all three campaigns, they managed to get a lot of the hard work done early, winning their first three fixtures in 2003/04, the first five the following year and the first two the year after that. So the Russian debutants will be expecting a fierce onslaught in this Group H opener.

  • Mid-Season Report
    | AC Ajaccio Finishing the 2012/2013 season just two points clear of the Ligue 1’s infamous lanterne rouge, Ajaccio’s fortunes haven’t seen any drastic changes. The Corsican side has had a rough start to this season, and find themselves sitting rock bottom. Having chosen to replace head coach Fabrizio Ravanelli in an effort to change the tides, Ajaccio seem to be hanging off the edge of an abyss and finished the year with just one win to their name. With Mutu not living up to expectations in the latter part of 2013, Ajaccio’s winter transfer window will be crucial in determining whether they will still be in top-flight come next season. Top - Ronald Zubar In an otherwise dormant team, Ronald Zubar has been one of the few names whose efforts made a difference. Signing for free from Wolverhampton in January, the defender was tasked with bolstering Ajaccio’s backline. Despite Ajaccio’s false start to this Ligue 1 season, which included a terrible October, conceding 7 goals in 4 matches, his determination and courage on the pitch saw him named Ajaccio’s best player of that very month ahead of Ochoa. Zubar’s consistent performances could well make the difference between relegation and salvation. Flop - Adrian Mutu The Romanian’s arrival in Corsica more than a year ago was the promise of ambition and high expectations for Ajaccio. His first season was a modest success which saw him scoring 11 goals, probably saving Ajaccio from relegation in the process. This season, however, Mutu’s turbulent career took another twist.
