Alyth Youth Partnership awarded £7,500 funding

Local charity Youth Partnership was handed a financial boost after becoming the latest good cause group to be awarded funding of £7,500 through Scotmid Co-operative’s Community Connect initiative. Alyth Youth Partnership earned the second most member votes behind Inverness charity Highland Cycle Ability Centre in Scotmid’s North Region, encompassing Inverness, Dundee, Aberdeen and Perth, at the Annual General Meeting in Dundee last night (Tuesday 1 May). Following in-store voting and an exciting ballot at the company’s AGM, Highland Cycle Ability Centre was recognised with the top award while Alyth Youth Partnership won £7,500 and Dundee’s Positive Steps received £2,500. Alyth Youth Partnership provide clubs and activities for local young people aged 9-25 in Alyth and the surrounding areas.

The charity’s aim is to promote social inclusion, address anti-social behaviour and encourage young people to take pride in their local community.

Funding from the £7,500 Community Connect award will now be used fund an arts project which will help young people to identify ‘What Makes Alyth’ through the use of music, photography, spoken word, dance and art.

AYP manager George Annan said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be awarded £7,500 funding from Scotmid’s Community Connect initiative – it provides us with a great opportunity to engage with even more young people in our local area through exciting projects. “We want young people to take pride in Alyth and we will use the funding to showcase local talent that will leave a lasting impression through a growing arts festival. “One of the pieces of art we want to create is a bronze statue that will forever be in Alyth – standing the test of time and showing the positive contribution that Alyth Youth Partnership can make. “This funding gives us the freedom to be really creative for the next year and we’re extremely thankful to all the Scotmid members, who voted for us.” Scotmid Co-operative Chief Executive John Brodie said: “Congratulations to Alyth Youth Partnership, who have been awarded £7,500 funding through our Community Connect initiative, which is funded from the sale of single-use carrier bags. “The outcome was decided by the votes cast by our members and it is great to be able to award all the short-listed groups with funding to enable them to continue the good work that they do. “Our core purpose is to serve our communities and improve people’s everyday lives, so it is very pleasing to see Community Connect continue to develop into an extremely worthwhile initiative for our members and local good cause groups – bringing people together and bringing worthwhile projects to life.”

In addition to Community Connect, Scotmid Co-operative’s Community Grant programme continues to grow in importance and popularity – last year over 1,000 local community groups applied and were awarded a grant of up to £500 and these projects range from Primary Schools’ breakfast clubs to communal garden renovations.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome to the June issue of the Alyth Voice!

It’s been another busy month for Alyth since our last issue. By the time you read this we will have enjoyed the Alyth Creates Festival - bigger and better even than last year’s fantastic showcase of local talent and creativity. With more events, exhibitions, live performances than ever before, Alyth Creates 2018 is a truly remarkable achievement for a small town like Alyth, and full marks to all the organisers, participants and of course the local community for turning out to support it. Our production schedule means we aren’t able to carry a report on Alyth Creates in this issue, but we hope to feature a full report next month.

Alyth Creates builds on our community’s strengths in terms of heritage and history, but also embodies our ability to renew those strengths and adapt to changing times. Indeed, that’s something of a theme in this month’s issue of The Voice.

In this issue, for example, we feature G A Davidson, one of our oldest established family businesses who are about to celebrate an amazing 65 years in business achieved through adapting to changing circumstances while maintaining core values of craftsmanship and quality.

Look out also for reports from Alyth in Bloom about the wonderful new drystane feature they have created at the town entrance - an example of how heritage and renewal can make a real difference. Well done to Ron McGill for designing and building the feature and to all involved in Alyth in Bloom for making it happen - they are doing some really great work in bringing colour and liveliness into the town and we wish them well for their future plans.

Their biggest new project, of course, is the proposed replanting of the burn-side between the Market Square and the Pack Bridge, work on which is hoped to begin later this year. This project is closely linked to the plans for a complete renewal of the Market Square itself, on which Alyth Development Trust, Alyth in Bloom and the newly-revived Community Council are collaborating in partnership with Perth & Council. Alyth Development Trust have put in a tremendous amount of work over the past four years to bring this project to fruition, and it’s fantastic to see Alyth in Bloom and the Community Council rolling up their sleeves and joining with ADT to make it the best it possibly can be.

Following Perth & Kinross Council’s successful public consultation on the latest Market Square plans in May, the three local bodies are hopeful that the works will start within months and, fingers crossed, be finished by Christmas. By then, I hope everyone will agree that the temporary disruption will have been more than worth it and we will have a heart of the town that we can be really proud of.

Elsewhere, we are eagerly awaiting the planning application for detailed permission to start the first phase of building on the former Glenisla Golf Course. This has sparked some controversy in the town because of the scale and location of what’s being proposed. We understand that Glenisla Developments were planning to lodge their application around the end of May, but at the time of writing that had not yet happened. We await developments with interest.

Finally, I want to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who help to produce and distribute The Voice each month, and to all our supporters in the town, and especially this month the wonderful ladies of Kilry SWRI for their generous donation towards our funds. It’s people like you who make all our efforts worthwhile!

SCOUTS

The long awaited good weather has finally condescended to grace us with its company. The Scouts carried out an exercise in preparing for camp including personal and group kit lists, activities and menu. Some of the dishes included were easy to make up for a start, but as the plan grew the choices were diminishing until their list was exhausted. Undaunted by this misfortune, they bravely entered for Sunday Lunch “Jacob”. Whether boiled, stewed or roasted was not explained, but I don’t think they were referring to biscuits! Amongst the various activities the Cubs have been doing, was the construction of bird boxes, which having been completed will be put up for nesting. Peter Kinnear was the supervisor of this particular activity and he drew some concern when he mentioned to hit the right kind of nail – the metal one, not the one on your finger. Fortunately due to his attentiveness – no Cubs were injured in the making of these!

James Atkinson along with the other Leaders, introduced the Scouts to firelighting and outdoor cooking. Norman West and Kenny Moyes our Explorer Leaders had the Scouts cooking using a Dutch Oven, one of our latest acquisitions. This particular cooking appliance is something of a new venture as it can be used as a cooking pot (complete with tripod), or if placed directly on the fire, the lid can be covered with hot embers and it becomes an oven. That way we can burn food in two different ways. Apparently there is quite a choice of dishes that can be cooked using this equipment and I am sure we will have some interesting experiments over the summer. Such is progress, and I hope none too incapacitating on the digestive juices.

It was a pleasure to attend the 10th anniversary of the Drumderg Wind Farm Fund in the Airlie Street Hall. This fund has played a significant role in the development of the entire Scout Group over the ten years it has been in operation. It was interesting to see how many other local organisations had benefited from this fund and the difference it has made to the community at large.

May & June are two of our busiest months and the Scouts carrying out their Expedition Challenge this weekend. We are heading off to the hills. I know where they are meant to be heading so it will be a voyage of discovery to see where we actually end up!

Alyth Walkers

Two seasons in two walks

The weather for the April walk was very misty and somewhat cold. Starting from Enochdhu and heading towards the along the the group made a detour on the hill tops and were joined by an unexpected influx of new walkers. Returning to join the Cateran Trail at a lunch hut was a welcome break from the weather, before heading back to the cars. May’s walk from was a complete contrast as the temperature reached a very pleasant 22° C. Heading along the Tay the group crossed the busy A9 to link with forest tracks leading towards the Hermitage with a short detour to visit a rather curious folly. After admiring the deep gorge at , carpets of wood anemones and primroses lined the paths to the beautiful and peaceful Balhomish lochan for lunch. Tea and scones on the banks of the Tay at Dunkeld sealed a memorable day. If you would like to join the group walks please contact Sue on 01828 632624 or email [email protected].

Mow the lawn weekly, keep hoeing those weeds and where necessary hand weed round plants. As I've said before hoeing regularly will save time in the long run.

Greenhouse: Pinch out side shoots from tomato plants, take care to pinch the correct shoot its the shoot that appears at the axel between the main stem and a leaf. Modern varies of tomatoes tend to grow leafy shoots from the end of the trusses these can be removed also. If the weather is bright try and give cucumbers a bit of shade, easiest way to do this is to white wash the glass.

Plant out summer bedding plants watering regularly until established. Remove dead head as soon as possible to encourage further flowering. Place containers and hanging baskets in their final positions.

INVITED TO HARRY & MEGHAN’S WEDDING

Alyth was well-represented at the recent Royal Wedding, with local lad AJ Macgregor helping to represent the Army Cadet Force (ACF). AJ, who is a cadet staff sergeant in the Blairgowrie ACF, is one of only two cadets from Perthshire who took part and formed part of the honour guard outside the Queen’s entrance to St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. Here he is looking splendid in his uniform with the Chapel in the background.

“It was one of the best days of my life,” he said. “It was such an honour to be asked - the atmosphere was fabulous, and everyone spoke to each other.” AJ was accompanied to London by his dad Sandy Macgregor.

This was definitely the highlight of what is AJ’s last year in the cadets, where he holds the rank of Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for Perthshire, in which role he has already met the Queen and many senior royals, as well as the First Minister of Scotland.

AJ is originally from Blairgowrie but has lived in Alyth for the last seven years with his mum Wendy and stepdad Keith Henderson. He joined the cadets six years ago following in the footsteps of his two older brothers and has loved every minute of it. He has achieved the summit of a cadet career, with the award of Master Cadet at Frimley Park in London, becoming one of the top 32 cadets in Britain.

He’s also a member of the pipes and drums for the cadets, and has played at the Birmingham International Tattoo, at Edinburgh Castle (twice), and at the Household Division Beating To Retreat 2017 on Horseguards Parade in London. He is also Pipe Sergeant of Blairgowrie, Rattray & District Pipe Band, and a member of Pipe band. He’s just finished his Advanced Highers exams and is deciding whether to go to Aberdeen University to become a maths teacher, join the Army to pursue his bagpiping, or become a professional bagpipe tutor.

Airlie Street Hall Coffee Morning

The Airlie Street Hall Committee would like to thank those Alyth worthies whose invitation to the Royal wedding must have been lost in the post and who came to the Hall to help celebrate the Hall’s birthday. It is now 150 years old. The grand sum of £801.60 was raised to help the committee continue its work to maintain and improve the facilities in the hall. The money on this occasion will be used as part of the funds to replace the over 30-year-old external windows. These will cost nearly £8000!! Thank you again for your support.

Iain Donaldson Chairman Hall Committee

It’s ‘festival’ season for Perthshire Brass as we emerge from a successful contest season, dust down the summer folders, and get involved in community events across the whole of . Perth Beer Festival, and of course Alyth Creates, have been highlights so far as we prepare for our trip to Bydgoszcz in July. On top of fundraising for our latest tour (Tour number 14!) we also have a mammoth target to meet to start the process of buying a much needed new set of instruments.

With a ‘blue sky’ budget of £95,000 to buy a top quality instrument for every position in the band we have set ourselves an initial target of £60,000 which would allow us to address the most pressing areas of concern.

The Gannochy Trust have very generously pledged £30,000 on condition that we match fund this. Whilst we wait for news on the other applications we have submitted, we continue our own fundraising efforts throughout a very busy June. Our Annual Concert is in St Matthew’s Church, Perth on Sunday 17th June, then on Saturday 23rd June, we have our Coffee Morning in Alyth followed by a performance in Glenfarg. Chuck in concerts in Methven, Kincarrathie House and the Northern Counties Entertainment Contest then you can see that we are definitely a band in demand!

ALYTH YOUTH PARTNERSHIP

May was a scorching month in terms of weather, and a scorcher for AYP. Thanks to the members of Scotmid Co-Operative, we received £7500 to run a programme of art and drama starting later this year. We also received £2000 from Tesco Bags of Help to support our work in the AYP Garden and already we have some lovely plants growing - whilst the battle against the dreaded “Mare’s Tale” is ongoing… AYP members will be keeping their fingers green by watering the plants for Alyth in Bloom. Don’t be alarmed if you see them ‘fishing’ for water, it’s just our latest idea to make the job a bit easier!

AYP was represented at the recent 10 Year Anniversary celebrations of the SSE Drumderg community fund and we enjoyed meeting trustees and other beneficiaries. We have opened discussions about how feasible an AYP presence might be up in the Kirkmichael area, or if some of the youngsters in that area might be interested in joining our groups if we can help with transport.

Clare from the Blairie visited the youth club in May and helped Rhiona write an article about the musical society. This might just be the start of a long career in journalism, and it all started in Alyth.

We enjoyed a night out at the theatre with 28 young people being transported by Stagecoach to the Joan Knight Studio to see ‘Baba Yaga’. I learned a few things that night - entertainment is in the eye of the beholder (the kids loved it), and when a parent asks if they can send their child along with a ‘wee snack’, they really mean enough food for a 72 hour expedition. I personally think that the constant rustling and accompanying ‘shoosh’ from all 5 of us who were supervising them made the performance a bit more engaging.

At the time of writing we are looking forward to the Alyth Creates Festival, and Anna has been working with the young people on a plan to hide decorated stones all over the town for visitors to find and hopefully hide again in their home towns. Eventually, we hope that people log on to our facebook page and report stones hiding all over the country. Also, for the Alyth Creates festival we will have a small display in the Hub window showing some of the work that our young people did with local photographer Phil Oudney. They have been learning how to develop photos by using the dark room process and have produced some beautiful pictures.

Phil has been very supportive of AYP, and his next venture is verging on madness. He has pledged to do a sponsored walk from Inverness to Perth, non stop over 48 hours, to raise funds for our trip to Germany. He has already mugged most of his customers and suppliers at the Mill Shop in Newtyle, but if you would like to encourage him, and help us on our way, then you can make donations at the Hub, to Phil himself, or by visiting www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ philthemill. He plans to have this done at some point in June and his timings will be dictated entirely by the weather - 107 miles is hard enough but 107 miles in the rain would just be silly!

Plans for Germany are almost finalised with a visit to the local football match planned (they have just been promoted), a day with a youth club including basketball coaching, and some of the girls will be dancing at the Buntberg youth festival. A day at the outdoor pool complex is definitely on the cards if the sun shines.

We had international visitors to Alyth with some of the Friends of Perth visiting from Aschaffenburg in May, and in June we have 15 visitors from Bydgoszcz, Poland staying with us in Alyth for a long weekend. I think it is so important for us to show our young people the benefit of travel, “broaden their horizons” to coin an old phrase, and to encourage acceptance of people from another culture. This will continue to be a feature of our work for years to come so that some of the insular attitudes that we encounter in the media can be balanced with the reality that humans are not much different regardless of where they are and what they believe.

Lastly, huge congratulations to our youth worker Demmie who by the time this goes to print will have given birth to her baby girl, and will be preparing for her marriage to Tony. The young people organised a baby shower at the Hub and are desperate to meet the newest member of the AYP family!

THE RECENT FILM

The recent film ‘The Silent Child’ starred six-year old deaf Maisie Sly, who won an Oscar for playing a profoundly deaf girl living in silence until her world was opened up when a social worker taught her sign language. This moving film shows how society still needs to understand hearing loss and how to deal with it, so those affected can conquer their social isolation and depression to have healthy family and social lives and remain in work. Hearing loss could happen to you or anyone; it can occur at any time. In the UK, 50,000 children are affected – half from birth – and by age 50, 40% of us have a hearing loss. By 2035, it is predicted that 15 million Britons will suffer a hearing problem be it a total loss, reduction or tinnitus. One way to cope with a hearing loss is to attend lip-reading classes. Run locally in Blairgowrie, Perth and Forfar by Susan Brown, one of the few qualified lip-readers in Scotland. Her classes have attracted a lot of attention appealing to both men and women of all ages. They are relaxed and friendly as one student commented: “The classes are a great way to socialise with people who have similar problems, friends who understand.” The weekly classes last for only two hours and have many benefits in addition to learning to lip-read. Talks are given by outside agencies that help with advice and equipment for everyday living. Firemen talk about safety in the home, the police about security for the hard of hearing, Deaf Action, Action on Hearing Loss, Hearing Link and Hearing Dogs all advise on independent living. Some provide equipment for the hard of hearing – much of which is free – such as flashing door bells, television aids, and smoke alarms. Susan also introduces students to some basic British Sign Language to help with spelling out words and counting, which can be a very useful back-up to lip-reading. Students enjoy all aspects of the classes as they are informal and friendly. The classes in Perth and Forfar are funded by Deaf Action, however Susan has to find her own sources of funding for Blairgowrie. The NHS Innovation Fund covered the past two years and Eastern Perthshire Decides provided funding until March of this year. Susan is currently funded by the Greggs foundation and the Perth & Kinross See Hear Steering Group until the end of June this year. Due to increasing awareness and demand, Susan is planning a new beginner’s class this October and to fund this and continue the existing classes Susan needs help. If you are interested in joining one of Susan’s classes, or would like her to speak to your social group or help by becoming a sponsor please contact her on 07940 333924.

ALYTH MUSICAL NOTES

Whilst the cast and crew are still recovering, and you may still be humming strains of “Windy City”, our sights are well and truly set on next April. Rehearsals for “The Sound of Music” will commence in September but, before the yodelling starts there is the matter of Alyth Musical Society’s Annual General Meeting which will take place on Monday 25th June in the Ogilvy Rooms at 7.30pm. As well as the usual business of accounts and electing the new committee it will also be an opportunity to find out about other activities throughout the year and plans for making next years show even more of an extravaganza! We would encourage anyone to attend and you will be made most welcome. So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu (for now….)

WHAT KATIE DID

Katie Ramsay 11yrs old had her hair cut on the 31st March for charity to raise money for the little princess trust, she had almost 15” cut off and has sent it away to make into wigs for children who loose hair through illness and treatment. On top of this Katie managed to raise a grand total of £727.50! She had set her target at £150 and absolutely smashed that! Lisa Dalton from Livhair the new salon in Alyth did the cut free for the charity, which was also very much appreciated and to pass on our thanks to all who donated. I am so proud of her. Victoria Ramsay (Katie’s Mum)

Thrifty One From the Community, For the Community

Opening times: 10am—4pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday Phone: Anne 07592 338449.(speak or leave a message) Facebook message on our page: Thrifty One Email: [email protected]

For those of you who use social media , you can find us as Thrifty One. Please like & share us with your friends. The more folk who know about us, the more funds we can raise. Thanks!

‘A Sign you have a positive workplace culture is laughter. Just listen to how much laughter there is where you work’

Not sure who to credit other than Facebook for this quote! But it struck a chord when it appeared on a friend’s page. We laugh and smile a lot at Thrifty One, staff and customers alike. In fact I think we all feel that any blues we might arrive with when we walk into the shop, are soon forgotten/ put to one side. Wish we had a photo of Grace pedalling a tiny bike between the clothes rails; of Ruth getting tangled up in an enormous velvet curtain as she tries to measure and fold it; Isabel trying on hats and handbags; Anne losing her specs on her head again!! We were trying to think how best to portray the special ambience of Thrifty One in this newsletter, it’s not easy! So back to Facebook and a couple of the lovely reviews we have received.

‘The shop is lovely. Always filled with smiling faces and people willing to help. Provided me with various bits for classes and hobbies. Thank you’ Rachel S

‘I volunteered in this shop for a year. At first I was looking for something to do and to get me out of the house as I was suffering from depression.... This shop has been a great remedy for me and led me on the road to recovery. All the staff are so nice and so are the customers. I was sad to leave. I would urge anyone; especially if they are feeling a bit down to do a few hours voluntary work here. It will really lift your spirits. Its a marvellous place’ Shell

The story of the month was the gentleman who popped in from the bar next door looking for a new pair of jeans. The zip on his own had broken. Grace and Anne not only found him trousers, but a jacket, shirt and tie! He left suited and booted, for under £15! Would love to have seen the faces on his mates in the bar when he walked back in! Then there was the customer who shot through the door en route to a wedding and needing a hat! She left happy and hatted!

Our Request for volunteers has already paid off. However there is always room for more! Our aim is to have three folk in the shop per shift. It makes all the difference. So please do drop in on our open day on June 7. We look forward to meeting you. Being able to get out of the house and relax with other Mums while the little ones play is so important. Friends made at this often exhausting stage of parenting are often friends for life. So we are pleased to be able to help Strathmore Tots out with their insurance again this year.

The yellow hi-vis vests of Alyth in Bloom have started to appear again in the streets around town. Work for the coming season is well underway. Daffodils planted last year have produced a vibrant show of colour augmented by the appearance yet again of the pale lilac cuckoo flowers---very pretty. Tattie boxes have been painted for a second time, now ready for the hundreds of plants, planned to go in. Flowerbeds have been tidied up.

Tucked away in a polytunnel are some 1500 plants all in pots. They will be transplanted into planters, flowerbeds, tattie boxes, etc. around Alyth when the risk of frost is over, early June

Alyth Primary School has called on our assistance to get a gardening programme started. Members from Alyth in Bloom meet with teachers and pupils for a short time each Tuesday lunchtime to help guide efforts to plant out vegetables and flowers in the planters at the new school.

One thing that is attracting a lot of attention is the dry stone wall—dry stane dyke—being built at the T-junction to the Blairgowrie Road. Alyth in Bloom is very fortunate to have, within the group, Ron McGill, who has had well over 20 years’ experience in this trade. With the assistance of members of Alyth Youth Partnership and other volunteers, Ron is building a structure, which will form a striking entry feature to the town of Alyth. On the central stone, there is carved a Pictish bull, commemorating the town’s close association with the and its history as an important drover town a few centuries ago.

As mentioned in a couple of previous Voices, Alyth in Bloom has been working with PKC, Alyth Community Council, Alyth Development Trust and a few others to come up with an agreed plan for the redevelopment of the side of Alyth burn from the telephone boxes up to the Packhorse Bridge. That plan was presented at a public consultation in Airlie Street Hall late April and received overwhelming support. You will not be able to read the details from the photo but they are--remove the existing planting of bamboo, keep the cherry trees there today, put down a hard surface on which we can walk along and see the burn, large planters and raised beds with flowers to provide colour, benches to sit and enjoy the sights and sculptures to reflect important events in the town. The aim is to produce an area, which fully complements and enhances this enormous asset that Alyth has.

Window-box style planters, to be fitted to the rails across the footbridges over the burn, have arrived and will be assembled and filled within the next month---should produce another vivid splash of colour in the middle of the town. And some 35 additional hanging baskets are being prepared and will appear in the town very soon. After a break of six years, Alyth in Bloom is resurrecting the Garden Competition where entrants’ gardens are judged by an impartial panel. See the separate advert for more details. More information will come in the next Voice.

As you see, we will have a busy 2018. We hope the work we do---and have fun doing—will bring pleasure to the community of Alyth and visitors alike. If you could be interested in joining us for an hour every now and then, or would like to learn more, check out our website, www.alythinbloom.org for contact details, or message us on www.facebook.com/alythbloom (---note carefully this address). We would love to hear from you.

36 Alyth Community Council

May 2018

The newly re-established Alyth Community Council held its third meeting this month. Previous meetings were to complete statutory registration documentation and were also necessary to obtain information from Perth and Kinross Council as to what the new council was able to do for the people of Alyth. Almost all the Councillors are new to this, but we hope to carry out the work on behalf of the residents to the best of our ability. We do however know that we can’t please everyone. At the last meeting requests from residents were discussed and the Council agreed to take the following actions.

A Speed limit of 20 mph in the town The Councillors agreed that we should proceed with this idea by speaking to P&K Council to assist us in implementing a scheme. A plan of roads to which the limits will apply will be advertised in Lunans, the Library and the notice board in the square. Comments, now or later after we have spoken with P&K Council, can be written and posted through the letter box in Airlie Street Hall or emailed to [email protected]. After reviewing the comments a final scheme will be drawn up and displayed for your information.

Parking Restrictions in and around the new Square Development. This is something that needs our attention. Ideas have already been forthcoming. A 2 hour free parking period followed by a fee for longer parking. Special consideration would be given for Hotel residents. Your comments as before by letter or email. The Alyth Council will review the responses before speaking to Perth & Kinross Council who we believe would manage the parking scheme.

Market Square Development Since the reasonably well attended display and discussion held in the Ogilvy Rooms the council have heard numerous comments about the design, both good and bad. The final decision is very close now so if you wish to make any further comments please, please, let the Alyth Council know as quickly as possible, again by letter or email as above. Your comments and questions can still make a difference. If you want to know anything about any of the design details please speak to any of the councillors. Their names are listed below.

Crow and Jackdaw Problem Many complaints about the health and safety hazard on the footpath below the trees beside the Mill Street Park from the birds above. A simple solution is to reduce the height of the trees. This used to be carried out by P&K Council. The Alyth Council will try to have it done.

Dog Fouling-Drug Use-Public Disorder The Police advised us that for action to be taken and because of limited resources within the Police and the P&K Council, only if a number of contacts are made to the relevant authorities will the necessary action be forthcoming. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 13th June at 7pm in the meeting room at the town hall.

Your Councillors are Iain Donaldson, Marina Ferguson, Willie Brewster Peter Fairgrieve, Mike Erskine, Linda Martin, Ian Tasker, Ron McGill, Alan Fegen

Interview with: G. A. Davidson by Kevin Coe

When George Alexander Davidson, known to everyone as ‘Sandy’, decided to set up his own business in 1953, he probably didn’t imagine that it would become one of Alyth’s longest-established family businesses.

In October this year, G A Davidson Joiner & Contractor will celebrate its 65th anniversary, now being managed by the third generation of the same family.

Sandy had served his apprenticeship in Blairgowrie with Bell & Sons Joiners, and later worked for the M L Thomas haulage company and George Ferguson Joiners in Alyth, where he became foreman. He went into business on his own in the former laundry of Barony Hall, later moving into a workshop he built himself on the concrete base of a former Nissen hut built for Polish Army troops during World War 2.

“He did general joinery work around the town and on local farms,” recalls son Graham, “and eventually employed two joiners.

“When I left school in 1964, I was apprenticed to one of the joiners. My dad wanted me to work for another company at first, but I was a bit too shy for that!”

The business thrived until Sandy decided to retire in 1977. “That surprised us all,” says Graham, “we thought he’d never retire, but sadly he was diagnosed with cancer and died about a year later.”

Still only 27, Graham took over the business and kept going, winning new contracts for flat conversions and house extensions to add to the general joinery work.

“But then the government put VAT on building work and the market collapsed for a time, leaving us a bit in the lurch. The apprentice left and I had to pay off one of the joiners, but kept on Calum Turnbull who is now our foreman and has been with us for 36 years,” says Graham.

Good fortune came in the shape of the McLean & Stewart painting firm to work on some new houses near Graham’s workshop. “I went over one day and spoke to the site foreman, which was the start of 10 years sub-contracting for them all over Perthshire.”

During the 1980s, Graham and Calum were assembling kit houses for building companies and eventually decided they could make the kits as well as assemble them, generating more business.

“We’d also started winning maintenance contracts from the local council, work that continued for almost 30 years until 2016 when all council contracts went to a multinational company,” recalls Graham.

“We were still in the old workshop built by my father, but the lease terms made a move more attractive and sensible, so we bought the old Victorian mill building at the corner of Bamff Road and Pitnacree Street.

“We moved in in 1990 and built a big workshop area downstairs, with offices and a flat for my family upstairs, later creating two more flats to let. After a few years, the building next door became available and was ideal for the house kits we were building at the time, so we bought it and turned the original workshop into another four flats, and we’ve been here ever since.

“We were getting busier and eventually had about four or five men on the payroll, but about five or six years ago the house market dropped quickly, so we moved into more maintenance contracts.”

In 2011, another health scare prompted Graham to take a back seat and his son - also called Graham - left his job in Blairgowrie to take over.

“Graham’s middle name is Alexander, whereas mine is Anderson, so we’re keeping the ‘G A Davidson’ name alive!” says Graham.

“We’ve had business setbacks from time to time, and I’ve also had some health problems which have taken me away from the business a couple of times, but with a bit of luck and by being adaptable and diversifying at the right time we’ve survived.

“We’ve always had great staff, and we take care of them - they work with us, not for us. We also emphasise tidiness and smartness in our workshop, on site and in our vans and equipment.

“We now work for the Forestry Commission across Scotland, plus Scottish Natural Heritage, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire & Rescue, Mitie, Visit Scotland, PKC Culture and Tayside Contracts as well as all the local work for long-standing customers. We now have three joiners, two apprentices, a labourer and a book-keeper.”

G A Davidson believes in putting something back into the Alyth community, and is a long-standing sponsor of, among others, the Bowling and Tennis Club’s annual open competition, the Quiz League, Amateur Football Team, Bike Park, Agricultural Show, and the Alyth Creates festival.

If Sandy Davidson could see what he started all those years ago in 1953, we’re sure he would be amazed and impressed. Happy Birthday to G A Davidson for the October anniversary, and here’s to many more years in Alyth!

The Isla Parishes (SC031461)

The annual Plant Sale and Coffee Morning was held in Airlie Village Hall recently. Many of the congregation had been baking while others with green fingers had been beavering away potting up their seedlings and growing on plug plants in time for the sale.

The glorious weather brought out a large number of people and so the stalls were kept very busy, as were the kitchen staff who were providing teas, coffees and home baking. Four local craft tables also attracted a lot of interest. The total raised was around £1,250.00, although this was still rising at the last count. Thank you to everyone who contributed to a very successful fundraising event. (The photo above shows a busy, happy hall!)

The Annual Stated Meeting was held in May when affairs of the church were discussed. Ian Ramsay and Moira Clark received certificates for 30 years’ service as elders. They were both ordained in Lintrathen Church on the 14th May 1988. They are seen here on the right with Reverend Stephen Blakey, the Isla Parishes minister, who made the presentations.
