The village has an idyllic position on the banks of the River Tay and is characterised by its traditional stone houses. Strathtay has a friendly community with a village shop and post office at its heart. A bridge over the Tay links Strathtay to Grandtully where there is now a choice of places to eat out. Aberfeldy is the nearest main centre and has all essential services, including a medical centre. The town has a great selection of independent shops, cafés and restaurants, not to mention the Birks cinema which as well as screening mainstream films has a popular bar and café and hosts a variety of community activities. Breadalbane Academy provides nursery to sixth year secondary education. Dallraoich could hardly be better placed for enjoying the outdoors. In addition to a 9 hole golf course at Strathtay, there are golf courses at Aberfeldy, Kenmore, Taymouth Castle, Dunkeld and Pitlochry. Various water sports take place on nearby lochs and rivers, with the rapids at Grandtully being popular for canoeing and rafting. There is also a purpose built water sports centre at Loch Tay. There are some lovely walks directly from Dallraoich and endless more opportunities for hill climbing and walking nearby. Fishing is available on the rivers Lyon, Tummel and Tay, and shooting and stalking can all be taken locally. The main attraction of the area, however, is the spectacular scenery, which includes some of Scotland’s most famous beauty spots, namely: Glen Lyon, the Falls of Dochart, Kenmore on Loch Tay, The Queen’s View at Loch Tummel, the Pass of Killiecrankie, Schiehallion and Ben Lawers. Dallraoich enjoys all the benefits of a highland location, while remaining very accessible: Perth is only 27 miles via the A9, while Edinburgh and Glasgow are both within about 84 miles. Pitlochry railway station (about 10 miles) also has direct links to Inverness and London. DESCRIPTION Although very much part of the village of Strathtay, Dallraoich is set well back from the road and surrounded by just over half an acre of garden with a field and woodland to its north and west. The house is approached through stone gate piers and a hedge lined driveway leads to parking at the front and to the side of the house. Dallraoich is an attractive traditional house which has been sympathetically modernised inside and is in move-in condition. The front door opens to a reception hall with beautiful original staircase leading to the first floor. The sitting room is a magnificent room with a large bay window overlooking the front garden, a contemporary fireplace and lots of space for comfortable seating and entertaining. On the other side of the hallway is the family room which is a smaller and more informal space that also has a beautiful bay window and could equally be used as a dining room depending on a buyer’s requirements. An office sits behind the family room and has a view to the rear of the house. It is easy to see how life might gravitate to the kitchen which with its electric AGA and dining area is open to the sun room. The sun room is a bright contemporary space with comfortable seating and with double doors to the garden.     History of the Clan Macnab part five: The Dewars of St. Fillan The following articles on the Dewar Sept of the Clan Macnab were taken from several sources. No attempt has been made to consolidate the articles; instead they are presented as in the original source, which is given at the beginning of each section. Hence there will be some duplication of material. David Rorer Dewar means roughly “custodian” and is derived from the Gallic “Deoradh,” a word originally meaning “stranger” or “wanderer,” probably because the person so named carried St. Fillan’s relics far a field for special purposes. Later, the meaning of the word altered to “custodian.” The relics they guarded were the Quigrich (Pastoral staff); the Bernane (chapel Bell), the Fergy (possibly St. Fillan’s portable alter), the Mayne (St. Fillan’s arm bone), the Maser (St. Fillan’s manuscript). There were, of course other Dewars than the Dewars of St. Fillan and the name today is most familiar as that of a blended scotch whisky produced by John Dewar and Sons Ltd St. Fillan is mentioned in the Encyclopedia Britannica, 14th edition of 1926, as follows: Fillan, Saint or Faelan, the name of two Scottish saints, of Irish origin, whose lives are of a legendary character. The St. Fillan whose feast is kept on June 20 had churches dedicated to him at Ballyheyland, Queen’s county, Ireland, and at Loch Earn, Perthshire (see map of Glen Dochart). The other, who is commerated on January 9, was specially venerated at Cluain Mavscua in County Westmeath, Ireland. Also beginning about the 8th or 9th century at Strathfillan, Perthshire, Scotland, where there was an ancient monastery dedicated to him.
