Damen’s new shipyard in Vietnam, which will eventually be one of the largest in the Damen Shipyards Group, is taking shape, with the first phase expected to be completed in the first half of 2013.

PHASE 1 PHASE 2

Damen Shipyards has created a joint venture partnership, in which Damen has the majority share, with the local and well- established yard, Song Cam in Haiphong City. The new yard is located on a 42-hectare site in Haiphong City, near the Cam River. The location is ideal, with direct access to open sea. Damen Song Cam Shipyard has been granted a long-term lease of the land and has started land preparation and dredging work. Although largely focused on assembling and outfitting ships, rather than hull building, Damen Song Cam Shipyard will also have steel building capacity. Initially, the new yard will have hulls and steelwork supplied by shipyards in the region, including Song Cam itself.

25% cuts in fuel and CO² The Damen Eco Liner is based on the well-known Damen River Liner 1145. The new vessel has 60 cu m LNG capacity and will be fully classified by Bureau Veritas. Damen calculated that if LNG was used energy savings of around 25% could be realised, taking the Damen River Liner 1145 as the basis. Energy prices fluctuate of course, but at the time of carrying out calculations in the first quarter of 2012, the cost of diesel for such a vessel was around E 850,000 to E 900,000 a year. If LNG was used instead, this was cut significantly by between E 200,000 and E 230,000 a year. And in addition the maintenance of the gas engines costs far less then it would do in the case of diesel engines.
