Fokhrul Alam, Md.Gaziur Rhaman, Nripandra Kumar Singha & Aysha Akhtar University of Chittagong, Bangladesh Abstract- The study was conducted from April, 2006 to June, 2010 on landing trends, species composition and percent contribution of sharks and rays by weight using the catch records of Marine Fisheries Survey Management Unit, Chittagong from two landing centers Fishery ghat, Chittagong and BFDC ghat, Cox’s Bazar. This study identified 27 species in total representing 11 species of shark (04 families) and 16 species of ray (09 families). The highest landing volume (134 MT) and contribution (76%) to total catch for the whole sampling period was found from Scoliodon laticaudus followed by Rhizoprionodon acutus (108 MT or 55%), Carcharhinus melanopterus (75 MT or 38%), Sphyrna zygaena (49 MT or 26%), Chiloscyllium indicum (38 MT or 20%), Eusphyra blochii (22 MT or 11%) Galeocerdo cuvier (21 MT or 10%) and other (03 MT or 2%). Species which occurred least were placed in the ‘other’ category comprising Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos, Stegostoma fasciatum, Carcharhinus leucas and C. falcifomis. Varghese2 1 Fishery Survey of India, Mormugao Zonal Base, Goa - 403 803, India 2 Fishery Survey of India, Cochin Zonal Base, Cochin - 682 005, India Abstract The Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) and its variability observed in resources surveys reflect on the standing stock of the resource and the changes in the stock density. Data on the CPUE of sharks obtained in tuna longline survey in the Indian EEZ by Govt. of India survey vessels during 1984 – 2006 were considered in this study. A total effort of 3.092 million hooks yielded 20,884 sharks. 23 species belonging to five families were recorded. Average hooking rate was 0.68 percent which showed high degree of spatio-temporal variability. Sharp decline was observed in the hooking rate from the different regions. The trend in the CPUE is a clear indication of the decline in the abundance of sharks in the different regions of the EEZ, the most alarming scenario being on the west coast as well as the east coast, where the average hooking rate recorded during the last five years was less than 0.1 percent. It is evident from the results of the survey that the standing stock of several species of sharks in the Indian seas has declined to such levels that the sustainability of the resource is under severe stress requiring urgent conservation and management measures.

Chapman6 Species‑specifc monitoring through large shark fn market surveys has been a valuable data source to estimate global catches and international shark fn trade dynamics. Hong Kong and Guangzhou, mainland China, are the largest shark fn markets and consumption centers in the world. We used molecular identifcation protocols on randomly collected processed fn trimmings (n = 2000) and non‑ parametric species estimators to investigate the species composition of the Guangzhou retail market and compare the species diversity between the Guangzhou and Hong Kong shark fn retail markets. Species diversity was similar between both trade hubs with a small subset of species dominating the composition. The blue shark (Prionace glauca) was the most common species overall followed by the CITES‑listed silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini), smooth hammerhead shark (S. zygaena) and shortfn mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus). Our results support previous indications of high connectivity between the shark fn markets of Hong Kong and mainland China and suggest that systematic studies of other fn trade hubs within Mainland China and stronger law‑enforcement protocols and capacity building are needed. Many shark populations have declined in the last four decades, mainly due to overexploitation to supply the demand for their fns in Asia and meat in many other countries 1–4. Mainland China was historically the world’s second largest importer of shark fns and foremost consumer of shark fn soup, yet very little is known about the species composition of shark fns in this trade hub2.

    UNEP/CMS/MS/Inf/10 PRESENT STATUS OF SHARK FISHING IN THE MARINE WATER OF BANGLADESH Abstract : The present study was done during the period April/2006 to March/2007. A total 22 species belongs to 17 genera and 11 families including sharks, skates and rays were identified. Out of this sharks comprises of 10 species, 08 genera belongs to 06 families. In the ray group 10 species, 07 genera and 05 families and 02 species of skates belongs to 02 genera and 01 family were identified. The total landed of sharks, skates and rays were 398.68 MT. The percentage composition should that the highest catch in percentage weight, Himantura uarnak was 41.11% and the lowest Amphotistius kuhlii which was 0.04%.
