The Academy WW2 Roll of Honour

From the onset of the second World War in Sept 1939 until the formal end in Sept 1945, the Glasgow Academy suffered a great many losses during the conflict. The following is a list of the former pupils who were casualties and as far as we have been able to, includes information and photographs to tell the stories of these men. In some case, we have little or no information about some of these individuals, so please get in touch if you have anything which could help us fill in the gaps and help us tell their stories. 116 It was characteristic of such a man to volunteer for one of the most hazardous and exacting tasks of modern war, and as a paratrooper he served in the Italian Campaign and finally on the North-Western Front. He was a man whose genial temperament and sense of humour brought him friends in a great variety of ways within the Academy society. He was, for example, very soon associated with the Academical Players, and was ever ready to promote their numerous experiments in stage construction. But we can after all only speak of the little things which made up the happiness of his association with us. Of the big things-of the real character of the man as revealed in a crisis, we must let another speak. A brother officer wrote, " He died very gallantly indeed, encouraging his men in full view of the enemy, and his death was an appalling blow to all of us who were with him, as his coolness, courage and cheerfulness were an inspiration to all around him." This is the real measure of the man, as it is also the measure of our loss ----find our pride. In a brief time he had given us much: in any ordinary course of things we had just ground for expecting more, and for a long time, for he was already well-rooted in the Academy. Of the domestic loss which his death has caused, it is impertinent to speak here: but we wish those whom he has left behind to know with what sympathy, sincerity and homage we remember them---- and him---at this time of their bereavement.
