NATIVITY OF OUR LADY - September 8th SEPTEMBER - Month of Our Lady of Sorrows

The feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated each year on the eighth of September. Usual- ly it is the custom of the church to celebrate the feast day of a on the date of their death as this is truly their "die natalis", the day remembered as their birth into everlasting happiness. Mary, however, entered this world sinless through the privilege of the Immaculate Conception and is the firstborn of the redeemed. Her nativity is a cause for great joy as it is considered the" dawn of our salvation" as Pope St. Paul VI wrote in the document, Marialis Cultus in 1972. There is no reference in the Sacred Scriptures to the birth of Mary. That which is known about Mary's nativity is found in the Apocrypha, principally the Protoevangelium of James which has been dated by historians prior to 200 AD. This book gives us a detailed "And She shall be called Mother, account of the birth of Mary which begins in the fifth for all shall be her children." chapter and even gives a detailed conversation between --cf. At The Blessed by Cardinal O’Connor on December 28, 1993 Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.
