ADULT FAITH FORMATION Continuing religious education for adults striving to grow in their faith Forgiving Injuries

The first four works of spiritual mercy, while incredibly important, are not binding upon us universally. In fact there are times when it is prudent for us not to do them ourselves, but instead to search for someone more capable of counseling the doubtful and ignorant, admonishing the sinner, or comforting the sorrowful. Forgiving injuries and offenses is not like that. To not forgive an injury done to you is not only a failure to do a spiritual work of mercy, it is a sin. This can be hard, because we are human and live in human society, where we sin and are sinned against con- stantly. Sometimes these infractions against us can be egregious. In these moments, when we are so wronged and hurt, the answer is not to nurse these grievances. It might seem counterintuitive, especially in the secular society we are forced to live within, but forgiving that offense is actu- ally the best thing you could do. When it seems so hard, meditate on the Cross, where Jesus, the perfect man who never sinned, went to His death so that we, who had, have, and will commit so many injuries and offenses against God, would be forgiven. That will make whatever some- one did to us seem like nothing.

Jesus speaks directly to our need of forgiving others throughout the Gospels. In Matthew 6 and Luke 11 He gives us the Lord’s Prayer, with the penultimate line “forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” This is the ultimate Scriptural evidence that we need to forgive all offenses against us willingly. After the end of the prayer in Matthew, Our Lord even adds, “If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions,” (Matthew 6:14- 15). In Luke 17:3-4, Jesus says that if our sins against us seven times, and asks for forgiveness seven times, it is our duty to forgive him each and every time. And in Matthew 18:21-22 He tells Peter that you must forgive your brother not seven times but seventy-seven times (or in other words, never stop forgiving). These are just a few places, the Gospel and all of Scripture are loaded with commands and suggestions by

Jesus and the inspired authors to forgive those who insult and injure us.

There are hundreds of out there who are great examples of forgiveness, but one of the ultimate of modern times is St. Maria Goretti. A young girl known for her piety, she lived in severe poverty and helped her family from a young age, especially the last couple years of her life, after her father died of malaria when she was nine. At the age of 11, she was viciously assaulted by a 19 year old man named Alessandro Seren- elli, who attempted first to rape her, but after she, defending her virginity, repelled him, he stabbed her 14 times. As she lay bleeding to death in the hospital, she not only expressed forgiveness of her attacker, but said she wanted him to be with her in Heaven. This extraordinary act of for- giveness did not end with her death though. Years later Alessandro was in prison, and had not repented of his crime. St. Maria appeared to him in a dream and offered him lilies which he said burned when he touched them. When he was eventually released from prison after his sentence ended, he went to St. Maria’s mother and begged for her forgiveness. She gave it to him and they attended Mass and later St. Maria’s canoniza- tion together. Alessandro joined the Capuchins as a lay brother and worked as a gardener the rest of his life. All of this thanks to her forgiveness of such a horrible act, truly imitating Christ. SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints Jesus Willingly Forgives SPIRITUAL WORKS of MERCY: Forgiving Injuries They divided his garments by casting lots. The people stood by and watched; the rulers, meanwhile, sneered at him and said, “He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Mes- siah of God.” Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Je- sus, saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us.” The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, “Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corre- sponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your king- dom.” He replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Luke 23

Jesus knows that everyone is cable of receiving forgiveness when they are truly repentant. Jesus LOVES to forgive a willing heart! There is nothing we can do that can’t be forgiven—we must have the courage to ask God for mercy. In the same way, we are called to show mercy to others. Even if others hurt us and are not truly sorry, we must forgive. Forgiveness is a gift for our own hearts, so we can let go of that hurt and let God deal with justice.

We can willingly forgive by:  Always willing to forgive someone  Don’t hold a grudge In this series, color and cut out each picture to create  Give people a second chance  Accept others apologies with kindness your Works of Mercy prayer book. SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, September 6: Bl. Thomas Tsughi— Bl. Thomas Tsughi was born to a noble family in Sonogi, Japan around the year 1571. After receiving his education from the Jesuits, he joined the order himself in 1589. Tsughi was driven out of Japan for preaching Christ and was exiled to Macao. After some time he returned to Japan wearing a disguise and resumed his preaching. He was captured by Japanese officials and sentenced to death where he was burned at the stake in Nagasaki on September 7, 1627. Monday, September 7: Bl. Eugenia Picco—Virgin Bl. Eugenia Pico was born in Crescenzago, Italy on November 8, 1867; the daughter of musician Giuseppe Pico. After her father disappeared during her youth, her childhood was spent in an amoral upbringing without the practice of the Faith. As she grew older, she went to church more frequently and felt called to the religious life. She met the founder of the Little Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and ran away from home to join the order. Eugenia became Su- perior General, a role she served until her death from tuberculosis on September 7, 1921.

Tuesday, September 8: St. Corbinian—Bishop St. Corbinian was born in Chatres, France sometime between 670-680. Following the death of his mother, Corbinian began living as a in the church of -Germain at Chatres. After 14 years as a hermit, he traveled with his disciples to . While there he was consecrated a bishop by Pope St. Gregory II. He served as Bishop of Freisling in Germany. During his bishopric, he ran afoul of Duke Grimoald when he denounced his incestuous marriage to his brother’s wife which caused the wife to try to kill him. He fled, but he later returned under Grimoald’s successor.

Wednesday, September 9: Bl. Pierre Bonhomme—Confessor Bl. Pierre Bonhomme was born in Gramat, France on July 4, 1803. He felt called to the priesthood from a young age and was ordained on December 23, 1827. Pierre opened a middle and elementary school for boys and a school to prepare young men for seminary. He had a deep concern for the poor, so he opened a home for those in need. Pierre founded a religious order of women called the Sisters of Our Lady of Calvary in Gramat who took care of the poor, sick and elderly. After losing his voice while preaching, Pierre began focusing on the needs of those who are deaf or mute, so he opened a school and home for deaf-mute children in Mayrinhac- Lentour. Thursday, September 10: St. Salvius of Albi—Bishop St. Salvius was born in Albi, France in the sixth century. After working for some time as a lawyer, he entered the monastery and become a . Salvius was elected abbot, but left behind the mo- nastic life to live as a hermit. In 574, he was appointed Bishop of Albi. As bishop, he worked to ransom prisoners, care for the sick, and bring back King Chilperic from heresy. He was a good friend of St. Gregory of Tours and related to Gregory a vision he experienced of heaven. Salvius passed away after contracting an illness while caring for the sick during a pandemic. Friday, : Ss. Protus and Hyacinth— Ss. Protus and Hyacinth were born in Rome sometime during the third century. Accord- ing to tradition, they were servants of St. Eugenia who were converted to , along with Eugenia, and received baptism from Helenus the Bishop of Heliopolis. They lived for a time as in where they studied the Scriptures. They later traveled with Eugenia back to Rome where they were arrested for being Christians. Refusing to denounce the Faith, Protus and Hyacinth were scourged and then beheaded. Saturday, September 12: St. Ailbe—Bishop St. Ailbe was born around the mid-400s. Countless legends have arisen about the saint, such as claims that he was left in the woods as an infant and nursed by a wolf. It is believed that Ailbe was a of St. Patrick, and that he engaged in missionary work in Ireland. Ailbe traveled to Rome, where he was consecrated bishop by Pope St. Hillary. He then became the first Bishop of Munster in Ireland. King Aengus of Munster gave Ailbe the Aran Island, upon which he founded a monastery. Ailbe was known for his kindness, charity, and strong preaching of the Faith. COLLECTION FOR AUGUST 23, 2020 BECOME A PARISHIONER
