Other Editions Laced with a general British ire for the conquering Romans and unlike the volume on the Greeks which extols their many achievements despite the irreverent tone of the series, this one means it when it says rotten. Seven filmmakers contribute to this anthology series that offers misty-eyed memories and highly personal stories. My only gripe is that there was not enough detail in places and that the book was too brief. Personally, I believe any child who has an interest in history should give these books a go. Get A Copy.     Horrible Histories In our opinion, the Horrible Histories television programmes contain some of the best comic writing out there and Terry Deary’s original books are masterful. They injected bounce into many a lesson, regardless of the class’ age. They also raise questions on the relationship between comedy and historical tragedy. For an energetic and playful start, pair up pupils and ask them to debate which of two historical periods was more ‘horrible’. If you have the books to hold up as you call out, even better! e.g. Vicious Vikings or Stormin’ Normans? or Angry Aztecs or Terrible Tudors? Using some volunteers, perform the stimulus as a piece of Readers’ Theatre (script in hand). Once read, recap on what each character is saying, and let them discuss the different views in small groups: Janey - We wouldn’t want people joking about today’s tragedies, so it’s not fair to joke about the past, Chris – Maybe some things can be joked about, others not Andy – if enough time passes, anything can become fair game, Morgan – Books like Horrible Histories are there to entertain, and we should leave it at that. To let pupils show their initial thinking on each perspective, summarise the views on a pieces of A3 paper and place one in the middle of the room. Tell pupils that to agree with it, they stand closer, and to disagree, they stand further away. You can briefly hear reasons, but try to move to the next one fairly swiftly, and so on. Do they have any other thoughts on this issue? I’ve deliberately excluded mention of black comedy and gallows humour, in the hope pupils will raise these concepts themselves.

Barbara Henderson A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD Supervisors: Professor Kimberley Reynolds Professor Jackie Kay School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics Faculty of Arts and Humanities 2012 ABSTRACT This project consists of a reappraisal of children’s hist orical time-distort literature and a children’s novel within the genre, entitled The Serpent House , aimed at readers aged 9 -12. The submission consists therefore of a critical piece of academic research into the genre, which reflects throughout on how th e two pieces of work have informed each other. The research component of the project argues that the critical consensus, which s uggests that children’s historical literature employing time -distort elements is prone to conservatism and convention, misrepresents this body of writing. As I show from its earliest examples, it has been a genre at least as progressive as any other in children’s literature. An overview and two detailed case studies demonstrate these innovative elements. The chronological overview and the texts that make up the case studies illustrate ways in which writing of this kind has been and continues to be experimental at a variety of levels. Jane Yolen’s The Devil’s Arithmetic (1988) was chosen for its challenging content and Gary Crew’s Strange Objects (1990) for its experimental form . Analysing the primary texts and the related scholarship was part of the process by which I shaped my aspirations and creative decisions while writing The Serpent House and so the academic submission leads into a reading of my children’s novel, which forms 70 per cent of the submission.

    INTRODUCTION Welcome to the new Scholastic Children’s Books catalogue for 2015. Here at Scholastic, we have a simple idea at the heart of everything we do. We love kids! And we hope that we know kids better than anyone. Real kids: funny, silly, sometimes tired and grumpy, hugely curious, hugely imaginative.
