Language: English. A depth of lessons almost contained within each chapter of the book. A good, fun and enthusiastic way to teach children about the Romans. Jul 29, Rachel rated it it was amazing Shelves: youngadult , history. Details if other :. But then this book could be treated as a sort of introduction, inspiring the reader to read f History without the boring bits to get kids interested in learning about past civilisations. Book Tickets Atti Croft is a Roman teenager with brains but very little brawn. The humour, information and games in the book offers depth to history as a subject which no other book can do, in my opinion. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Somewhat predictably, the two youngsters from opposite sides of the conflict reach a mutual respect and understanding. Rotten Tomatoes. Please try again. I re-read this as I'm taking an A-level in archaeology and I am studying the Romans, obviously I will read lots of other books on the Romans aimed at adults, but I thought this was a nice place to start. When will my order arrive? I think this book is one of the only books that told me that the greatest and the most stupid things people did.

  • Horrible Histories
Horrible Histories In our opinion, the Horrible Histories television programmes contain some of the best comic writing out there and Terry Deary’s original books are masterful. They injected bounce into many a lesson, regardless of the class’ age. They also raise questions on the relationship between comedy and historical tragedy. For an energetic and playful start, pair up pupils and ask them to debate which of two historical periods was more ‘horrible’. If you have the books to hold up as you call out, even better! e.g. Vicious Vikings or Stormin’ Normans? or Angry Aztecs or Terrible Tudors? Using some volunteers, perform the stimulus as a piece of Readers’ Theatre (script in hand). Once read, recap on what each character is saying, and let them discuss the different views in small groups: Janey - We wouldn’t want people joking about today’s tragedies, so it’s not fair to joke about the past, Chris – Maybe some things can be joked about, others not Andy – if enough time passes, anything can become fair game, Morgan – Books like Horrible Histories are there to entertain, and we should leave it at that. To let pupils show their initial thinking on each perspective, summarise the views on a pieces of A3 paper and place one in the middle of the room. Tell pupils that to agree with it, they stand closer, and to disagree, they stand further away. You can briefly hear reasons, but try to move to the next one fairly swiftly, and so on. Do they have any other thoughts on this issue? I’ve deliberately excluded mention of black comedy and gallows humour, in the hope pupils will raise these concepts themselves.

  • Ug: Boy Genius of the Stone Age by Raymond Briggs (Red Fox)
Ug: Boy Genius of the Stone Age by Raymond Briggs (Red Fox) In this multi-layered graphic text the concept of a ‘stone age’ is taken to extremes with everything, including trousers made of stone. The story follows the quest of a Stone Age boy, Ug, in his search for softer trousers. With ideas beyond his time his questioning and inventive mind proves exasperating at times for his parents. This book provides many opportunities for discussion and lots of humour at different levels from the illustrations to the footnotes. Overall aims of this teaching sequence: To engage children with a story told through a mixture of speech and visual imagery To explore themes and issues, and develop and sustain ideas through discussion To develop creative responses to the text through drama, storytelling and artwork To compose writing for a wide variety of purposes To write in role in order to explore and develop empathy for characters This teaching sequence is designed for a Year 3 or Year 4 class. Overview of this teaching sequence This teaching sequence is approximately 4 weeks long if spread out over 20 sessions. If each writing opportunity is fully developed from inception to publication, sessions will need to be extended over more hours or more days to allow for this, thereby extending the number of weeks required to complete. The teaching sequence provides opportunity to explore the interrelationship between words and illustrations in a comic book and how the design and layout of panels on each page support narrative progression. It immerses the children in a fictionalized version of a Stone Age community in which the author plays with our expectations of the era to create humour in both the text and the images.

  • A Critical Dissertation on Time-Distort Fiction and the Serpent House, A
‘New Takes on Time ’: A critical dissertation on time-distort fiction and The Serpent House , a novel for children. Barbara Henderson A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD Supervisors: Professor Kimberley Reynolds Professor Jackie Kay School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics Faculty of Arts and Humanities 2012 ABSTRACT This project consists of a reappraisal of children’s hist orical time-distort literature and a children’s novel within the genre, entitled The Serpent House , aimed at readers aged 9 -12. The submission consists therefore of a critical piece of academic research into the genre, which reflects throughout on how th e two pieces of work have informed each other. The research component of the project argues that the critical consensus, which s uggests that children’s historical literature employing time -distort elements is prone to conservatism and convention, misrepresents this body of writing. As I show from its earliest examples, it has been a genre at least as progressive as any other in children’s literature. An overview and two detailed case studies demonstrate these innovative elements. The chronological overview and the texts that make up the case studies illustrate ways in which writing of this kind has been and continues to be experimental at a variety of levels. Jane Yolen’s The Devil’s Arithmetic (1988) was chosen for its challenging content and Gary Crew’s Strange Objects (1990) for its experimental form . Analysing the primary texts and the related scholarship was part of the process by which I shaped my aspirations and creative decisions while writing The Serpent House and so the academic submission leads into a reading of my children’s novel, which forms 70 per cent of the submission.

  • Introduction
INTRODUCTION Welcome to the new Scholastic Children’s Books catalogue for 2015. Here at Scholastic, we have a simple idea at the heart of everything we do. We love kids! And we hope that we know kids better than anyone. Real kids: funny, silly, sometimes tired and grumpy, hugely curious, hugely imaginative. We are very proud that Scholastic’s 2015 list has the biggest kid appeal yet. Across the country, little kids snuggling up want bedtime with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The Scarecrows’ Wedding is their beautiful, pastoral picture book: an instant classic. Mermaid by TV presenter Cerrie Burnell will be another big hit, a sparkling picture book all about friendship and underwater adventure. And for bedtime fun, Alex T. Smith gives a big twist to a classic fairy tale, with wild animals and doughnuts in Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion. What about big brothers and sisters? There’s not a kid aged 7 and up who doesn’t love Tom Gates. As our favourite review says, ”Get this book, it is amazing! You would be so unlucky not to it’s extremely funny and smart.” In 2015 we have Yes No Maybe coming from Tom’s multi-talented creator, Liz Pichon. We’ve also acquired a debut by two of the funniest guys around, Sam & Mark. Jokes and pranks abound in The Adventures of Long Arm. Every kid knows that Captain Underpants is funnier than homework, so we have a brand-new Captain Underpants book for laughing your head off before spellings. For decades now, Scholastic has been publishing the most imaginative books for tweens and young adults.
