GSA PRIDE MONTH

Orlando Cruz was born on July 1, 1981 in Yabucoa, . In the 2000 Olympics, Cruz represented Puerto Rico and launched his career. He won a world title and went undefeated for nine years. During the 2008 world title fight, the spectators bad-mouthed Cruz; they called him the f-slur. That incident caused Cruz to have a revelation: something had to change. Cruz spent the next few years meeting with a psychologist to gather the strength and courage to publicly come out of the closet. In 2012, Cruz came out as gay, becoming the first professional boxer to come out during their career and one of the first professional athletes to come out while still active. Not long after, Cruz won a major boxing match, flaunting his rainbow shorts. He married his boyfriend, Jose Manuel, a year later. In 2013, Cruz was inducted into the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame. Orlando Cruz is a brave boxer who unapologetically achieved his dreams despite homophobia. He's an inspiration for athletes, even more so for gay athletes, because he never let bias prevent him from successfully reaching his goals. ** DAILY ATTENDANCE **
