Consequently the role of literature, and especially poetry is re-examined from ecocentric perspective, that is, poetry is considered as promoting ecological consciousness. Some of the critics eve argue that this consciousness can be converted into activism. To them poetry can be successfully utilized in arresting the present ecological degradation and thus can save the planet from disaster. Here some mid-twentieth century poet, namely Ted Hughes, Seamus Heaney and Dylan Thomas are taken and their works are considered as promoting ecological consciousness. Further, some of the poems are thought to have reached to the level of ecological activism. Hughes’ poetry directly addresses the problem of man’s cohabitation with the non-human world. Heaney attempts to establish deeper connection of the individual with the soil. And Thomas’ pantheism is often considered as having deep ecological values. In the context it is also judged if at all poetry can have the seeds for promoting a global ecological movement. I remember my first reading of Plath, in college, at San Diego State University. We read, of course, all her famous poems from Ariel, as well as "The Jailor" ("I am myself. That is enough"[23]), "The Night Dances" ("So your gestures flake off" [29]). In my youth, on the beaches of Southern California, around a campfire, a group of us read to each other one night the poems of Plath, Ginsberg, Wilfred Owen, and D.H. Lawrence—seeing ourselves as prophets against war, despite that a few of us had been drafted to another oil adventure, including me. (Some of our friends had returned with no eyes or feet). We thought such famous poets could change America. They did not. (Despite Shelley's famous proclamation). Plath said in "Getting There": "Legs, arms, piled outside/The tent of unending cries—" (Ariel 57). Same old, same old historical mistakes: America, our 20th Century Roman Empire, we thought then. On the homefront, sexual activity in public places was then, as is now, monitored by our police, given our rape, murder, and "missing women" statistics, first or second in the world for such. Yet on that night, on that particular night, there was something "warmer" in the air on La Jolla Shores, as if we thought the world had calmed down for a moment. When the police arrived at our campfire, we all invited them to take it easy, since we saw ourselves as ordinary people, having ordinary activities in our ordinary bodies. -

It will be argued that poetry can have a unique role in supporting patients within a hospice setting. It emerges that there may be a further role of the poem as ‘memorial art’. The practical base to the research has been writing poetry based on conversations with, and the creative artwork of, hospice patients throughout a period of over three years. These working methods have enabled the author to produce a substantial collection of poetry, presented at the start of the thesis, as the prime evidence of the value of the approach. In this research context the ‘numinous’ is interpreted from its extended definition as relating to transcendence, wonder and otherness. Particular components of the writing practice have formed a ‘numinous poetics’. The numinous as a focus in this research has emerged through careful and scholarly reading and reflection as part of the author’s response to the perceived qualities and value of the poems as they were written. -

She often explores the perspectives of the voiceless women of history, mythology, and fairy tales as well as those on the fringes of society in her dramatic monologues. Duffy is most well-known for her collections Standing Female Nude (1985) and The World’s Wife (1999). She has also written plays and poetry for children. This poet belongs in our classrooms because… she explores the voices of those who have traditionally been silenced. Her poetry uses humor and emotion with simple language that hits us in the gut with its truth. It’s poetry that students can understand quickly but can also explore at length, uncovering its layers and relating to the speakers and their experiences. CRAFTS OF WORLD LITERATURE FACULTY OF ENGLISH, OXFORD 28-30 SEPTEMBER 2012 ABSTRACTS FOR PANEL SESSIONS 1. Short Story Shital Pravinchandra (Yale): ‘World Literature and the Short Story’ This paper engages with Moretti’s hypotheses about world literature in order to argue that the excessive attention he bestows upon the novel effectively reproduces the ‘one but unequal’ status of the world literary system. My claim is that an adequate theorization of world literature requires the literary critic to understand that unless we fail to take notice of the problem of literary genre the problem of world literature will only be further compounded. My paper turns to an entirely different genre — the short story — on the grounds that this is a necessary shift in focus that both takes into account the actual literary production of the global south and showcases the urgent need for literary critical attention to genre, both in postcolonial studies and in studies of world literature. Although the short story largely remains, to this day, as F. Odun Balogun puts it when discussing the case of the African short story, “a literature in search of critics” my paper looks at concrete instances of short story criticism and explores the shortcomings of the predominant models for understanding world literature, which rely heavily on the novel. The short story, I suggest, might offer a different yardstick with which to approach world literary production. Shital Pravinchandra is Assistant Professor of English at Yale University. She is currently working on a monograph entitled Same Difference: Literature and the Postcolony in the Age of Biotechnology, which explores the transformations that biotechnology has wrought on postcolonial studies. -

A more unusual focus in your magazine this College St Anne’s year: architecture and the engineering skills that make our modern buildings possible. The start of our new building made this an obvious choice, but from there we go on to look at engineering as a career and at the failures and University of Oxford follies of megaprojects around the world. Not that we are without the usual literary content, this year even wider in range and more honoured by awards than ever. Classic Poetry Series William Shakespeare - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive William Shakespeare(26 April 1564 - 23 April 1616) an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613 at age 49, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the 16th century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language.
