We wanted to find out how your community, and particular groups within it, would be affected if this branch were to close, and what we could do to help people through the transition. We contacted the following groups: We asked all of the groups to answer three MP: questions. You’ll find their responses below. Gavin Shuker In your opinion, what’s the biggest effect that this branch closing will have on your local community? Local Councillors Michael Dolling You said to us: Meryl Dolling There are some concerns about the possible impact of the closure on Stopsley, a village separate from Luton Customers and with its own community. A number of customers who regularly use the branch We’d like to say: We understand the concern from the community. We have looked carefully at how this branch is used. Many customers already also use nearby branches and online or telephone banking and we’ve seen a general fall in customers coming to the branch. To retain a community focus and ensure trade remains in the local area, we are showing people how to do their everyday banking at the nearby Post Office, which is open between 06:00 and 18:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and until 19:00 on Wednesday and Saturday. There’s also Sunday opening from 06:00 until 13.:00. We’re helping customers understand the transactions they can do there. We’re talking to customers about how they can do their banking from home too. The town remains well-served with free to use cash machines at Tesco, HSBC, and the Shell service station, all within 200m of the branch. 8 | 9 What’s the biggest effect that this branch closing will What alternative ways to bank do you believe would have on customers of the branch? help people adapt to the change? We’ve spoken to our Business and Corporate customers too about other ways of banking Our nearest branches are at George Street and Bury Park in Luton. However, we understand it’s not always convenient to travel, so we’ve been offering support to help customers adapt to new ways of banking that mean they don’t have to come into the branch so often. Other things to help with the change… At the Post Office customers can withdraw cash, pay in cash and check balances using a debit card and pin. Customers can also pay in cash using a pre-printed paying in slip at the Ramridge and Round Green Post Offices, although it could take an extra two days to reach Barclays accounts using a paying in slip. Unfortunately this service is not currently available at Stopsley Both business and personal customers can pay in cheques. You’ll need: 1. a pre-printed paying-in slip. You’ll find these in your cheque book, or you can order them at any branch 2. a paying-in envelope. We have extra stock in the Luton Stopsley branch, so please call in before the closure to pick some up. Otherwise, just call 0800 169 3091 for these, and we’ll pop some in the post. A CRITICAL EVALUATION OF THE LOWER-MIDDLE PALAEOLITHIC ARCHAEOLOGICAL RECORD OF THE CHALK UPLANDS OF NORTHWEST EUROPE The Chilterns, Pegsdon, Bedfordshire (photograph L. Blundell) Lesley Blundell UCL Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD September 2019 2 I, Lesley Blundell, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. Signed: 3 4 Abstract Our understanding of early human behaviour has always been and continues to be predicated on an archaeological record unevenly distributed in space and time. More than 80% of British Lower-Middle Palaeolithic findspots were discovered during the late 19th/early 20th centuries, the majority from lowland fluvial contexts. Within the British planning process and some academic research, the resultant findspot distributions are taken at face value, with insufficient consideration of possible bias resulting from variables operating on their creation. This leads to areas of landscape outside the river valleys being considered to have only limited archaeological potential. This thesis was conceived as an attempt to analyse the findspot data of the Lower-Middle Palaeolithic record of the Chalk uplands of southeast Britain and northern France within a framework complex enough to allow bias in the formation of findspot distribution patterns and artefact preservation/discovery opportunities to be identified and scrutinised more closely. Taking a dynamic, landscape = record approach, this research explores the potential influence of geomorphology, 19th/early 20th century industrialisation and antiquarian collecting on the creation of the Lower- Middle Palaeolithic record through the opportunities created for artefact preservation and release.

  • Luton Motor Town
Contents Luton: Motor Town Luton: Motor Town 1910 - 2000 The resources in this pack focus on the major changes in the town during the 20th century. For the majority of the period Luton was a prosperous, optimistic town that encouraged forward-looking local planning and policy. The Straw Hat Boom Town, seeing problems ahead in its dependence on a single industry, worked hard to attract and develop new industries. In doing so it fuelled a growth that changed the town forever. However Luton became almost as dependant on the motor industry as it had been on the hat industry. The aim of this pack is to provide a core of resources that will help pupils studying local history at KS2 and 3 form a picture of Luton at this time. The primary evidence included in this pack may photocopied for educational use. If you wish to reproduce any part of this park for any other purpose then you should first contact Luton Museum Service for permission. Please remember these sheets are for educational use only. Normal copyright protection applies. Contents 1: Teachers’ Notes Suggestions for using these resources Bibliography 2: The Town and its buildings 20th Century Descriptions A collection of references to the town from a variety of sources. They illustrate how the town has been viewed by others during this period. Luton Council on Luton The following are quotes from the Year Book and Official Guides produced by Luton Council over the years. They offer an idea of how the Luton Council saw the town it was running.
