Stockton Shifts in Protestant Worship and Doctrine Pastor Jonathan Stockton 2017 BBTS Fall Lecture Series " Baptists and the Reformation" Protestant philosophy with respect to worship has been in flux for the past seventy years. Because of that, and in order to address shifts, a baseline must be established. A church's and a Christian's philosophy of music and worship should be doctrinal. That is, they should be sifted through the Scriptures just as any other dogma. For instance, the tongues movement, as a pneumatology, is contrasted to Scripture, and cast out. Calvinism, as a soteriology, is thrown against the castle wall of Scripture, and repelled. So there should be a "doctrine" of music! This is not "hymnology," which studies primarily the music used in worship, but a doctrine of music in its general use in the world, with or without lyrics. It might be called "psallology." It should be a Scriptural musicology. Perhaps to say that a philosophy of music and worship should be doctrinal is a misnomer – they seem to be so inherently, so that a church can often be identified by its music, and its music usually identified by its doctrine. Many would contest that statement, but even casual observation overwhelmingly supports it. I. Should Baptist churches be musical? God's churches are musical. A. Romans 15:9-11 explains that Psalm 18:49-50 is a prophecy of the fact that Gentiles would sing the praises of God along with God's chosen people, because of His great mercy.

As we investigated what bands would be touring this past spring in preparation for this Live Event issue of Church Production Magazine, and saw that Tomlin and Redman would be touring with Pastor Louie Giglio, founder of the Passion conferences, we jumped at the opportunity to see what these leaders in the Christian worship and teaching community we're bringing to the table for this tour—and what it would take for a church (in this case, First Baptist Church of Orlando, Florida) to support such an event. Pulling into FBC Orlando at 8:45 AM on an overcast Saturday morning on the third of March, two tractor-trailer trucks were already backed up to the entrance of the church, and the band's two tour buses for band and crew were parked off to the side, with the band and some of the crew grabbing a last few minutes of sleep. Even with a tour this size, the crew going out with the tour is minimal, and church volunteers are relied upon to make the load-in, setup, tear-down and load-out happen smoothly and effectively.

    CLAY SCROGGINS Author of How to Lead When You’re Not in Charge: Leveraging Influence When You Lack Authority Clay Scroggins is lead pastor of North Point Community Church (NPCC), where he provides visionary and directional leadership for the local church staff and congregation in Alpharetta, Georgia. As the original and largest campus of North Point Ministries, ranked by Outreach Magazine in 2014 as the largest church in America, NPCC averages over 12,000 people in attendance. Clay works for Andy Stanley (“one of the greatest leaders on the planet” according to Clay) and understands firsthand how to manage the tension of leading when you’re not in charge. Starting out as a facilities intern (a.k.a. “vice president of nothing”), Clay worked his way through many organizational levels at North Point Ministries and knows all too well the challenge of authority deprivation. Clay holds a degree in industrial engineering from Georgia Tech. During his years at Georgia Tech, he volunteered with the high school ministry at NPCC and discovered a passion to help students find a faith of their own. Also during that season, Clay attended a Bible study led by Louie Giglio, and a relationship developed that allowed Clay to be involved with Passion Conferences. At Dallas Theological Seminary, Clay earned a master’s degree as well as a doctorate with an emphasis in online church. Zondervan will publish Clay Scroggins’ first book this August, entitled How to Lead When You’re Not in Charge: Leveraging Influence When You Lack Authority.
