PRESS RELEASE Marcel Hirscher: “I’d like to be able to race in Andorra every year" The Avet slope in Grandvalira becomes a meeting point for ski lovers from all over the Pyrenees, bringing together more than 5,000 people Alexis Pinturault wins the Giant Slalom in Soldeu, a discipline that has already been adjudicated to the unbeatable Marcel Hirscher Shiffrin maintains her leadership setting the best time in the Slalom and taking home the Crystal Globe Andorra la Vella, 16 March 2019. The Avet slope in the sector of Soldeu de Grandvalira, which hosted the Men’s Giant Slalom and the Women’s Slalom in the 2019 Alpine Ski World Cup Finals in Andorra, brought out the new skiable platform for the first time, allowing the finish line to be extended and providing more space for the public. Around 5,000 people, mostly from Andorra, the Pyrenees and France but also even further afield, came to enjoy the descents of the best skiers in the world, transforming the Avet slope into the epicentre of the Pyrenees for Alpine skiing. The public made the most of the show put on by the competitors and there was intense interaction between both the skiers and their audience thanks to the proximity of the grandstand to the slope. The new finish line at the Avet stadium has passed the enormous test involved in hosting the World Cup Finals. Good weather has once again been the star of this penultimate day of the event, with sunshine and mild temperatures but with a slope and snow conditions that have met the demands of the International Ski Federation (FIS).

  • Alexis Pinturault Takes Victory for the First Time on the Gran Risa
PRESS RELEASE ALTA BADIA ALEXIS PINTURAULT TAKES VICTORY FOR THE FIRST TIME ON THE GRAN RISA The 29-year-old Frenchman adds the Alta Badia race to his records: he has won 15 giant slalom races in his career, as many as Alberto Tomba, who applauded him at the edge of the slope. Alta Badia (South Tyrolean Dolomites/Italy) - Alexis Pinturault adds his name to the list of winners on the Gran Risa, a slope that is legendary. Here champions the likes of Ingemar Stenmark (who won the first edition in 1985), Alberto Tomba and Marcel Hirscher wrote the history of alpine skiing. Thirty-five years of great emotions on the snow, although it was weird today not to feel and hear the warm welcome of the fans at the finish line, and not to be overwhelmed by the celebrations that every year animate the Ski World Cup event, from dawn until after sunset. And yet, thanks to the protagonists, it was a spectacular day on the Gran Risa, with the breath-taking runs of the strongest skiers on Earth. We also need to praise the incredible work of the volunteers who started working very early in the morning to prepare a perfect slope. Nobody managed to do better than the 29-year-old Frenchman (2‘27“19), who was leading already at the end of the first run. In the second run, Pinturault was able to defend himself against the attack of a young and bold athlete like Atle Lie McGrath (who was second and who is only 20 years old), edging him out by only 7 hundredths and winning for the second time in this season (the first one in a giant slalom).

  • Ski World Cup Alta Badia the Spotlight Is on the Gran Risa Slope
PRESS RELEASE SKI WORLD CUP ALTA BADIA THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON THE GRAN RISA SLOPE The men’s races valid for the Alpine Ski World Cup will be held in Alta Badia on Sunday 20 and Monday 21 December. The Gran Risa slope will be hosting, respectively, the Giant Slalom and Slalom, both of which will be televised. Alta Badia (South Tyrolean Dolomites/Italy) – Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined that the 35th Alpine Ski World Cup in Alta Badia would be so different this year, and it will certainly go down in the event’s history, which dates back to 1985. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRAN RISA: 35 YEARS OF SKI WORLD CUP RACES Male athletes first battled it out on Gran Risa's Giant Slalom, valid for the Alpine Ski World Cup, on 15 December 1985. 35 years have since gone by, each full of emotions, passion for sport and adrenaline, on a slope that is now world-famous. The event was born from the dream of Marcello Varallo, a former Italian athlete, who himself had participated in many international races around the world. “I'd always seen the great potential of the Gran Risa slope and was always convinced that it would become a run respected by the world’s best athletes”, commented Marcello Varallo, who used his skills and experience to bring the ski world cup to his home, Alta Badia, after retiring as a professional athlete. Right from the very first edition, the Ski World Cup races have contributed to making Alta Badia a world-famous destination.
