PRESS RELEASE SKI WORLD CUP ALTA BADIA THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON THE GRAN RISA SLOPE The men’s races valid for the Alpine Ski World Cup will be held in Alta Badia on Sunday 20 and Monday 21 December. The Gran Risa slope will be hosting, respectively, the Giant Slalom and Slalom, both of which will be televised. Alta Badia (South Tyrolean Dolomites/Italy) – Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined that the 35th Alpine Ski World Cup in Alta Badia would be so different this year, and it will certainly go down in the event’s history, which dates back to 1985. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRAN RISA: 35 YEARS OF SKI WORLD CUP RACES Male athletes first battled it out on Gran Risa's Giant Slalom, valid for the Alpine Ski World Cup, on 15 December 1985. 35 years have since gone by, each full of emotions, passion for sport and adrenaline, on a slope that is now world-famous. The event was born from the dream of Marcello Varallo, a former Italian athlete, who himself had participated in many international races around the world. “I'd always seen the great potential of the Gran Risa slope and was always convinced that it would become a run respected by the world’s best athletes”, commented Marcello Varallo, who used his skills and experience to bring the ski world cup to his home, Alta Badia, after retiring as a professional athlete. Right from the very first edition, the Ski World Cup races have contributed to making Alta Badia a world-famous destination. “The 1985 edition was only the beginning: the most difficult challenge back then was to make people understand the huge added value that hosting the world cup in Alta Badia could bring for the FIS circuit”, continued Varallo. Thanks to the incredible level of commitment from all the volunteers involved, the first edition was a huge success, securing the approval of the national and international federations. The Alpine Ski World Cup in Alta Badia went on to become a regular event, scheduled for the last Sunday before Christmas every year. Over the years, Alta Badia has also had the honour of hosting slaloms and, a few years ago, night-time Parallel Giant Slaloms also began to be held here. It is not just a single town or municipality that benefits from this event, but the entire valley and South Tyrol as a whole. Over the years, the Gran Risa has seen great champions battle it out, including Ingemar Stenmark (winner of the first edition), Roberto Erlacher (a locally born athlete) and Alberto Tomba, who made it to the podium an amazing eight times, not to mention more recent athletes such as Bode Miller and Marcel Hirscher, winner of eight gold medals on the Gran Risa slope. 2020: THE SAFETY OF ATHLETES, STAFF AND COLLABORATORS COMES FIRST The 2020 edition will be very different from the others, although, from a sporting point of view, by no means less exciting. It is therefore of key importance to guarantee the utmost safety for the athletes, their staff, media representatives, volunteers and everyone involved. To this end, the Organising Committee has been working flat out for months to draw up a comprehensive safety plan for the event. “Be Defender” fabrics are also playing an important role in this project, and will be used everywhere: for tablecloths, cushions, etc., wherever necessary. During the most difficult months of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Italian company Gelmi began a research project in collaboration with the Department of Molecular Medicine at the University of Padova, studying how long Sars CoV 2 remained on textiles. An antibacterial and antiviral treatment was then developed for these specific fabrics, in order to prevent bacteria from spreading and the virus from accumulating. During the race days, Be Defender cushion covers in non-woven fabric will be handed out, each having undergone the tried-and-tested antiviral treatment; the aim is to protect and look after people when they travel and can't sleep with their own cushion. ANDY VARALLO, CHAIR OF THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE FOR THE ALPINE SKI WORLD CUP IN ALTA BADIA: “There's not long to go now until the first of the Gran Risa Giant Slalom heats. We’re getting everything ready with almost no-one else around and we really miss the contact with those who would usually start arriving in November to build the hospitality area at the finish line, as well as all those who would come to launch online ticket sales or pass by our office to double-check what needed to be done face-to-face. We miss the coming and going of people, not to mention all the happy times shared with the volunteers and partners; however, it is our job and our duty to set a good example, endeavouring to reduce the spread of the virus in order to allow our well-loved and much-desired winter season to reopen as soon as possible”. THE EVENT IN WORLD VISION The first run of the traditional giant slalom will start at 10 am on Sunday 20 December, whereas the second run will take place at 1.30 pm. On Monday 21 December, the slalom racers will go on stage again at 10 am and will tackle the second run at 1.00 pm. All the races will be broadcast in world vision and can be easily watched on television. The athletes will be at the starting gate with the same motivation as always and the same desire to win on one of the most captivating routes of the entire Ski World Cup. The many fans will be able to follow the giant slalom and the slalom this year in world vision, will offer all their heartfelt support from home too. Because the ski family is a large one and is united even at a distance. PARTNERS AND SPONSORS: UNITY IS STRENGTH The Alpine Ski World Cup Alta Badia Organising Committee would like to give a heartfelt thanks to all the partners for their support. Despite the current difficulties and the reduced visibility of the various brands, the main partners have decided to support the Ski World Cup in Alta Badia in any case, behind the scenes and not on the stage like in previous years. This confirms the solid and healthy relationship that has been built up over the years between the partners and the Alpine Ski World Cup Alta Badia Organising Committee.
