AUGUST 2020 31 MUSIC SPOTLIGHT Story Aleasha Bliss fter travelling the world for 20 years performing for country stars, Andy Toombs has settled into the Brighton beachsideA lifestyle just in time to drop his All debut album. February 16 had successful bass player and singer Andy Toombs performing in the Fire Fight Australia Concert at ANZ Stadium with Lee Kernaghan and alongside the world’s most prolific artists and about bands to raise funds for bushfire victims. “Supporting fellow Australians after the summer we had was amazing; this concert helped the nation,” Andy said. “The good vibes and positivity that that came from it helped everyone - I’ll never forget that.” Andy has an impressive number of stamps in his Bass passport as his career has paid for him to see the world. He has toured with massive names, including Australia’s own Kasey Chambers and Andy Toombs Troy Cassar-Daley. “I’ve always loved travelling and that’s one of the reasons I did the van life thing,” Andy said. “I’ve always been comfortable being all over the place, although I’m really digging how stunning it is here in Brighton.” In February, Andy had a soft release of his debut album, Gypsy Man, on which he wrote and co- wrote eight of the 10 bluesy, folk tracks that delve into his personal experiences of lost love, travel, reflection and philosophy, painting a raw and honest portrayal of his life. “It is scary putting yourself out there with art, as it’s up for interpretation,” Andy said. “Making the album was a real growth journey for me. I have learned a lot and I’m not afraid to be out front, as I am usually supporting others in the background.” As COVID-19 restrictions are lifting, Andy can see the light at the end of the tunnel and is pumped to share his album with everyone later in the year by touring Australia and supporting big names along the way. “As everything is re-opening again, I’m already getting a lot of enquiries and I’m getting ready to promote myself. I am looking forward to the next step and hoping everyone likes it.” Listen to or purchase Andy’s album Gypsy Man at andytoombs.bandcamp.com 32 SANDGATE GUIDE NDIS registered i t d provider id accepting SIL participants

AUGUST 2020 41 Interview by Linda Read LOCAL Photo Bruce Redman FACES “I grew up in Holland in an orphanage, until I was 21. I’m the fifth child in my family; my brothers and sisters were all in the orphanage too. I arrived in Australia by migrant ship in 1961 [aged 23] with my first husband and two small children, and I was pregnant. WILMA We first went to the Bonegilla Migrant Camp in Victoria. My husband loved the drink, and sold anything we had. At one stage, some Dutch people let us stay in their yard – in a chook pen. WALTON It didn’t have any sides, just a roof and a back and a bit of wire on the sides. I was working as a cleaner at the Mater Hospital and one day I collapsed from malnourishment. I weighed just over five stone [about 32kg]. Then, the housing commission gave us a house at Inala. I met my second husband, Gordon, at a dance at West End. He was very handsome, a real gentleman, and very kind. Gordon found our house [at Deagon] in 1968; it was $5000. We came and had a look at the house and I said, ‘I don’t want to live in the bush!’ But when our daughter was born the following year, I was so grateful. I used to walk to Shorncliffe with the pram, by the water. I love Sandgate. I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else, even when Gordon died in 2011. I’m going to be 83 in November. What I love now is my family, my gardening, and reading. I also love politics. The first thing I do in the morning is put my phone on and look at what’s going on in the world. If I go shopping, and I see something I like, I buy it. Also, nature makes me happy; it doesn’t matter what weather it is. I like to be able to see outside from where I’m sitting. I have to be around people sometimes, but I love being on my own too. I think growing up in the orphanage you had to learn how to cope with life. One of the secrets is you have to laugh a lot, and always be young at heart. You could say I’ve been from hell to heaven. I always say ‘thank you Gordon, for giving us such a lovely place’.” 42 SANDGATE GUIDE SANDGATE SENIOR CITIZENS - WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS It’s a place you can come and relax and enjoy yourself

8 FISH OF THE MONTH Low Tide Wonders

Catfish

Toad Story Peter Hansler

hile driving, walking or riding across the , have you ever wondered what mightW be lurking underneath? Other than the obligatory sharks and usual fish at high tide, low tide is a different story. The mostly sandy banks makes it a great place to go puddle- jumping. Pylons that hold the bridge up form little water holes around them in the sand Sandcrabs and there is a hidden array of marine wildlife just waiting to be discovered. My cameras have recorded many varieties of small fish (some of them quite pretty), baby blue spotted sting rays, schools of striped catfish, feeding sea cucumbers, eels, tube worms, sand crabs, hermit crabs and so much more.

I am amazed at the wildlife that can be literally under our feet.

Check out my YouTube page for the footage. Tubeworm

Peter Hansler is a local “fish enthusiast” who promotes and educates about our native fish and responsible angling via his website rainbowrunner.ausfish.com.au. Story Philip Woods

cold beer is one of life’s special treats to the taste buds. It is a simple blend of grain, hops, yeast and water, yet resultsA in myriad complex and delightful flavours and forms, enjoyed in countries all across the globe by legions of devoted fans.

52 SANDGATE GUIDE Just a short drive up the Bruce Highway to the Sunshine Coast we are lucky enough to have quite a selection of craft breweries to visit on a weekend away or a day trip. Torren Read is one of the founders of Terella Brewing, a new brewery concept in the picturesque area of North Arm (near Eumundi) that is committed to sustainable brewing. “We’ve built a new and innovative system Family owned and locally for brewing that uses fresh water naturally operated in the produced by the vertical farm system on site to for over 12 years make our beer. “Fermentation in the brewing process produces CO2, which we then re-inject back into the vertical farm to help grow the crops. It’s a fully enclosed sustainable cycle.  Residential  Commercial/Industrial  Property Management

Besides making great beers, the Terella Brewery also features a taproom for tastings Landscaping and a farmyard where the kids can learn about animals while the grown-ups watch on with a Paving • Garden Clean-ups cold one in-hand. Terella, like many of the New Gardens breweries on the coast, is a perfect place for All Aspects of Landscaping families and friends to meet and unwind. If you don’t make it to the Terella Brewery, try out the amber offerings and fine foods to be found at Brouhaha Brewery (Maleny), Glass House Brewery (Forest Glen), Sunshine Coast Brewery (Kunda Park) or Eumundi Brewery. You can learn about the craft during a brewery tour and confirm your understanding with a beer-tasting afterwards. The COVID-19 restrictions have been brutal for many small breweries, so get out there and do your bit to help; you’ll be rewarded with a great day out and samples of some of the Sunny Ph 0422 077 151 Coast’s finest craft beers.
