Now that we’ve got that out of the way, you’ll want to hear just a bit of my story for the sake of credibility. You should know who you are taking advice from, after all! The last job I ever had—I GOT FIRED... and it was the best day of my entire employment history. It took me a while to think of it as a positive development—it’s not as if I loved the immediate shock of being let go. No one wants to get fired, but there are points in life where the news hits harder than it would have otherwise. This was one of those times. My wife Andrea was eight months pregnant, and if there’s one time in life where having health insurance is a good thing—it’s then! In the hours and days after being fired I became very determined. I didn’t send out resumes. I didn’t start calling my “connections.” I was done. No looking back. 5 I decided that I was going to become one of the greatest success stories of online marketing that the world had ever seen. My wife was a wreck for a few days (as was I), but she believed in me and encouraged me. I had further proof that I had married an amazing girl! We had a few months of savings built up, and I had some ideas that were starting to pay off, but still—it was a huge leap of faith. That was the start of my online career back in 2002—and I hope my story will stir something powerful inside of you. Change is possible! This book HAS played a role in thousands of people’s lives since that time, as I’ll soon prove to you. I wrote the first version of the book you are now reading and sold about 10 copies of it to customers of mine in early 2002 (just before I was fired). At that time, I had very few readers to give me feedback and even fewer who put my ideas into practice. Back then this was a book mainly about how to creatively succeed using eBay.com, but it’s about so much more than that now! You are now reading the 9th major update and re-release of this book. This version has very little in common with the original because the online world has changed rapidly, and I’ve matured considerably in my approach to building serious businesses online. I keep updating this book to keep it relevant, effective, and powerful for my audience. The above two pictures are from our first two live events. I hosted them for the readers of this book. Orlando was our first, held in 2013. It was a “spur of the moment” decision to invite our audience to meet up with my family in Orlando while we were on an extended 6 vacation. This event sold out fast (we had over 300 people on the waiting list). We called it our “C.E.S.” conference. I’ll explain that powerful acronym in Chapter 3. Since that first conference, our audience has exploded. Over 500 people attended our next event (in Dallas), and again, we sold out in one day with a huge waiting list of folks that wanted to get in but couldn’t! As I write this update, we have just sold out our third event, which also sold out in a day. Are you detecting a pattern? I think we are onto something here. Hundreds of thousands of people have either paid for, or received and read, earlier versions of this book.     Dynamic Mapping of Secondary Cities Symposium Center for Geographic Analysis Harvard University June 14-15, 2016 Introduction Secondary Cities in the developing world are rapidly growing urban areas that are regional hubs for commerce, services, and governance in developing countries that often do not have adequate planning mecha- nisms for future development and growth. This symposium will focus on the foremost data collection tools and technologies used to map ur- banization in such cities. It is part of the Secondary Cities initiative, a global collaboration of universities and organizations supported by the Humanitarian Information Unit of the Office of the Geographer of the State Department. The aim of the symposium is to bring together organizations and in- dividuals involved in innovative mapping activities and solutions for emergency preparedness, resiliency planning, and urban sustainability. The symposium will open with a half-day session to provide a hands-on venue to explore and assess online, open sources tools for mapping and creating geospatial data for cities. The 2nd day is a full day with sessions including: 1) Secondary Cities overview; 2) case studies of dynamic city data collection; 3) interactive assessment session of tools as linked to emergency preparedness, resiliency planning, and urban sustainability; 4) solutions/lessons learned.     Status of Worldmap, 2016 GeoNode Summit 2016, Rome, Italy - 11/29/2016 Benjamin Lewis, Paolo Corti Harvard Center for Geographic Analysis A brief history ● WorldMap was developed by Harvard CGA as a branch of GeoNode 1.2 and released in July 2011 as a public space for scholars and the public to upload and share spatial data ● Before WorldMap CGA developed several platforms with similar aims: AfricaMap (launched in 2007), Boston Research Map (sociology), VermontMap (geology), ParisMap (history) and ChinaMap ● Within a year WorldMap had about 12k datasets and 8k users ● Right now, after 5 years, there are about 20k users, 23k datasets and 7k maps. Lewis3 Abstract: WorldMap is an open source online mapping application which aims to lower barriers for scholars who wish to visualize, analyze, organize, present, and publish mapped information. In late 2013, two hundred and ninety respondents among the eight thousand registered users participated in an online survey in which they described their activities, purposes, experiences, and preferences regarding the system. Participants also described their professional background, GIS skill level, age, gender, and country of work. This study analyzes the results of the survey, by summarizing the responses to each question independently and by examining the relationships and dependencies of these answers across the different questions to try to better understand why users responded the way they did.
