“Interrogation of the Past”: Henry James and William Wetmore Story ELIZABETH POWERS Though artists of many nations made the journey to Italy, to partake of “the great Roman back - ground,” as Henry James described it in his biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne, very few of them were at home there. Winckelmann and Raphael Mengs both penetrated the high - est and homeliest circles of Italian life, but for most foreign - ers Italy was a vast museum or an imaginative home, das Land, wo die Zitronen blühn . Its unaccountable reality was a different matter, even for Goethe, a seemingly cosmopoli - tan man who nevertheless was not comfortable with Roman society and, while in Italy, consorted almost exclusively (with a few important exceptions) with other Germans. As he wrote to the duke in Weimar a few months after his ar - rival, interest in the living Rome ( das neue lebendige Rom ) would interfere with his imagination. Despite its suggestions of experience, the poem cycle Roman Elegies , begun in 1788 , is mediated through art and literature (the triumvir of Catullus, Propertius, and Tibullus), while the connection be - tween love and Rome was probably the result of his meeting with Christiane Vulpius shortly after his return to Weimar. Italian Journey (1813 –17 ) mentions meals taken but no Ital - ian food; in Rome Goethe ate at Caffè Greco (also known as Caffè Tedesco). The Roman Carnival , despite the beautiful hand-colored plates that accompanied its first publication in 1789 , is written by someone who suffered rather than ap - preciated the event. It was not principally the primitive nature of Italian do - mestic life or the byzantine political conditions that kept for - arion 16.2 fall 2008 52 “interrogation of the past” eigners in their enclaves. -

Was Irving Babbitt an Educational Counterrevolutionist? Eric Adler University of Maryland Admirers of the work of Irving Babbitt (1865-1933), the chief figure asso- ciated with an informal school of literary and social criticism called New Humanism, have long recognized that many of Babbitt’s critics have failed to take seriously—or even to understand—his ideas. According to the political philosopher Claes Ryn, for example, even during Bab- bitt’s lifetime “reckless distortions of his ideas gained wide currency.”1 The caustic debates surrounding New Humanism that took place in the early decades of the twentieth century, it seems, encouraged critics to contribute tendentious and careless appraisals of Babbitt’s work.2 Such partisan and misleading critiques continue to influence assessments of Babbitt today. The one hundredth anniversary of Rousseau and Romanticism, argu- ably the author’s quintessential monograph, provides an excellent op- portunity to revisit assumptions about Babbitt’s ideas.3 This article will make the case that some scholars of American higher education have proved especially egregious distorters of Babbitt’s thought. Humanitas Vol. 32 Winter 2009 Issue 2 A Message From the OCC Table of Contents President An Invitation to Attend the 3 Dear OCC Members, Ohio Junior Classical League Convention Please allow me to begin this message by thank- ing Gwen Compton-Engle of John Carroll Uni- William Wetmore Story and versity for her efforts in putting together this past year’s Ohio Classical Conference. All of “Black” Cleopatra Cynthia King, Wright State 4 those in attendance greatly enjoyed all of the presentations given throughout the weekend. University During discussions at the meeting, a common Vergil Week at Case Western 10 theme that emerged was the future of Classics Programs at the High School and University Reserve University Level in the state of Ohio. Many high school teachers expressed a concern about the recent OCC Scholarship Information 12 push to add courses in Chinese, potentially at the expense of the Latin programs at their in- OCC Offi cers and Council 16 stitutions. If you are aware of a High School Program whose existence is threatened, please contact the OCC President as soon as possible so that the OCC can take the appropriate ac- tion. During Saturday’s panel discussion on recruit- ing students, the participants put forth a num- ber of helpful suggestions to increase commu- nication between High School teachers and University professors of the Classics. Many University professors expressed a desire to be able to directly contact students potentially interested in studying Classics at their univer- sity. In an attempt to meet this need, please see inside this edition of Humanitas an invitation to college professors to attend the Ohio Junior Classical League Convention in 2009. -

In fact, getting outside is a great way to keep your family physically and mentally healthy during this stressful time. This document includes ideas for staying active outdoors, along with resources for helping kids stay safe while walking and biking. It is best to stay close to your home, some of the greatest walks are right outside your door. The Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) states you should not schedule playdates, group sports activities, or meet-ups. You should only interact closely with the people you live with. If you see friends and neighbors outside when you are out, wave hello and keep your distance. Because fans have traditionally been associated with an especially participatory relationship to the object of fandom, the shift to a norm of media interactivity would seem to position the fan as the new ideal consumer; thus, I examine the extent to which fans are actually rendered ideal and in what ways in order to assess emerging norms of media reception in the Internet era. Drawing on a large archive consisting of websites for sports and speculative media companies; interviews with industry workers who produce content for fans; and film, television, web series, and news representations from 1994-2009 in a form of qualitative big data research—drawing broadly on large bodies of data but with attention to depth and texture—I look critically at how two media industries, speculative media and sports, have understood and constructed a normative idea of audiencing. -

Lowell Charles s. h opkinson (1869-1962) The Innocent Eye June 8-July 20, 2013 V ose Fine American Art for Six Generations Est 1841 G alleries llc introduCtion Vose Galleries is pleased to present our fifth one-man exhibition of works by Boston painter Charles Sydney Hopkinson (1869-1962), most of which have come directly from the Hopkinson family and have never before been offered for sale. We present fifteen watercolors and fifteen oil paintings, including the powerful cover work, Yacht Races , which illustrates Hopkinson’s life long search for new methods and ideas in the making of art. Unlike most of his Boston con - temporaries who studied and taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Hopkinson chose a different approach. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City, whose instructors followed a less dogmatic method of teaching. The artist also made several trips to Europe, where he viewed exciting new forms of self-expression. He was one of only a few Boston artists to be invited to show work in the avant-garde International Exhibition of Modern Art in New York City in 1913, which exposed audiences to the radical art movements taking place in Europe, particularly in France. Now cel - ebrating its one-hundredth year anniversary, the exhi - bition, which is now commonly referred to as the Armory Show of 1913, has become a watershed in the history of modernism in the United States.
