In previous years, the Documentary and Fiction Work-in- Progress Labs have been mentored by top international industry experts. by NFDC

Philippa produced ’s acclaimed international television series : China Girl, starring Elisabeth Moss and Nicole Kidman which premiered as part of the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival, 2017. She also produced the Season One of Top Of The Lake; which was nominated for eight Emmys and two Golden Globe Awards and received recognition at the 2014 BAFTAS, PGA awards among many others, and won the AACTA Best Miniseries and Best Drama Series awards in the NZ Television Awards. Philippa has worked as an executive producer on a number of recent debut features - Jackie Van Beek’s The Inland Road (premiered in ), On An Unknown Beach by Adam Luxton and Summer Agnew, and Paolo Rotondo’s Orphans And Kingdoms. One of ’s leading feature film producers, Philippa has produced, among others, Christine Jeff’s multi-award winning debut Rain (premiered in competition at Cannes), Number 2 by (Sundance World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award winner) starring Ruby Dee, and Toronto Midnight Madness comedy- Philippa Campbell horror hit Black Sheep. She also produced Academy Award nominee screenwriter Anthony McCarten’s debut feature Via Satellite and NZ Best Director (2011) Florian Habicht’s performed documentary Rubbings From A Live Man. Philippa’s features have all been distributed internationally in major territories, including the US . She is currently developing several co-production projects and a feature documentary.

Derek Malcolm is a film critic with the Huffington Post. The Huffington Post is an entirely online American and British news aggregator and blog. It has a massive readership all over the world, including . Derek has an illustrious background in film journalism and criticism, and he covers festivals all over the world. He is also the Honorary President of International Film Critics Association (Fipresci), and President of British Federation of Film Societies. He has served on juries at the three main European Festivals in Berlin, Cannes and Venice, as well as at the Moscow, Istanbul, , Singapore, Chicago, Dinard and Rio Festivals. He was formerly the Director of the London Film Festival during the 1980’s and a former governor of the British Film Institute. He had also been the chief film critic at The Guardian for 35 years before moving to the Evening Standard, which Derek left in 2015 to join Huffington Post.

Derek Malcolm

Film critic and historian, director and writer of documentaries about cinema, Marco holds the chair of Production Design at the Academy of Architecture, USI. He started working in 1978 as a festival programmer in Italy (Consultant for Asian cinema at the Venice Film Festival from 1981 to 1995). He created the “Ombre elettriche” (Electric Shadows) Festival in Turin (1981). Subsequently he was the director of the festivals of Pesaro (1982- 1989), Rotterdam (1989-1991) and Locarno (1992-2000), Venice Film Festival (2004-2011) and Rome Film Festival (2012-2014).

After one year of head-programming festivals in Mainland China (Beijing IFF, Fuzhou Silk Road IFF), he has directed until November 2016 the 1st Macau International Film Festival and Awards. He is currently Artistic Director of PYIFF - Pingyao Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon International Film Festival, the new Chinese festival initiated by the celebrated director Jia Zhangke. In his parallel career as a film-producer, Müller has produced and co-produced 11 features that include award-winning movies (Academy Award for Marco Mueller Best Foreign Film, top-tier honours in Cannes, Venice and other major festivals) from Russia, Central Asia, Bosnia, China, Turkey, Iran and Brazil. He has also produced short-films and documentaries. He has written and edited several books about Indian cinema and filmmmakers, programmed Indian films and monographical retrospectives about Indian films and film-makers for all the festivals he has directed. For his contribution to the international promotion of non-Western cinema he has received the top honours granted to foreign citizens for cultural merits by nine different Asian governments and foundations. Olivia Stewart’s films as a producer include Terence Davies’ The Long Day Closes, The House Of Mirth, Mark Herman’s Brassed Off and Todd Haynes’ Velvet Goldmine. Her work has now evolved into broader fields and in collaboration with the Binger Film Lab Amsterdam & NFDC India, she was Mentor/Creative Producer for Scott Graham’s Shell (Best Film Torino Film Festival 2012), Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox (Audience Award at Cannes La Semaine de la Critique 2013, Best First Feature Toronto Film Festival), Kanu Behl’s Titli (Un Certain Regard Cannes in 2014), Kim Farrant’s Strangerland, Matt Sobel’s Take Me To The River (both at Sundance 2015), ’s Chauthi Koot (Fourth Direction) (Un Certain Regard Cannes 2015, Best Film , Singapore and Belgrade Film Festivals)and Miransha Naik’s Juze (Hong Kong, Karlovy Vary and Mumbai Film Festivals 2017). In 2014, on behalf of the PJLF Arts Fund, she set up the EYE Prize with the EYE Film Museum Amsterdam to support & promote an artist or filmmaker whose work unites art & film. In 2016, she started The PJLF Three Rivers Writing Residency Programme which offers writer/directors a five Olivia Stewart weeks retreat to write and work with expert script advisors, and the chance to present their projects at the Dubai Film Festival. In 2017, she started the PJLF Three Rivers Editing Residency with Rima Das’ Village Rockstars, which was selected for the Toronto, San Sebastian and Mumbai Film Festivals, where it won the Golden Gateway Award, the Oxfam Best Film for Gender Equality and Young Critics Choice Award. Also in 2017 Olivia co-authored Joan Leigh Fermor: Artist & Lover, a monograph of photographs published in March 2018. She is the Director of Bellrock: Creative Scotland Screenwriting Workshops, which is now in its 2nd year. She has been a jury member for the Locarno, Fajr, Asiatica, San Sebastian Film Festivals, and is a member of AMPAS, BAFTA & EFA.

Lizi Gelber was raised in Italy by American parents, and completed her education at Columbia University in NYC. She returned to Rome where she started working in film editing on feature films such as Once Upon a Time in America by Sergio Leone and participated in a prolific moment of filmmaking at Cinecittà. She then worked on feature films in Los Angeles for many years. She is grateful to have worked with many talented directors such as Roman Polansky, Michael Cimino, Robert Altman, Paul Schrader and Roland Joffé.

She moved to Paris after meeting her French husband on a film in Zimbabwe, and became interested in the challenges of feature length documentaries, which combined her love of drama and storytelling with her concern for social issues. When Jonathan Demme spent a year in Paris shooting a feature, she edited and associate produced his documentary The Agronomist. She was also at the origin of Sacro Gra, Gianfranco Rosi’s documentary which won the Golden Lion in 2014. She has continued to edit both feature films and documentaries, often supervising and helping to find solutions for problematic narratives. Lizi Gelber

Anders Villadsen graduated as a film editor from the National Film School of Denmark in 1995. Villadsen is an experienced editor and has worked on a large number of feature films as well as documentaries and television series.

He has long-standing collaborations with directors such as Anders Thomas Jensen and Ole Bornedal. For Bornedal’s Just Another Love Story (2007), Villadsen won a national Robert award in 2008 for best editor. In documentary films, he has edited such films as My Afghanistan – Life in the Forbidden Zone (2012), The Agreement (2014), Dream Empire (2016), Tutti a Casa – Power to the People? (2016) and Code Faithful (2017). Villadsen has also edited films by Anders Østergaard, including Gasolin (2006).

Philippe Bober is a French producer who founded Coproduction Office in 1987 that produces and sells bold and award-winning films by directors with a strong personal vision. This European group of companies consists of an international sales company and three production companies, Essential (Berlin), Parisienne (Paris) and Coproduction Office (Copenhagen), under the banner Coproduction Office. Amongst Europe’s best international sales companies, Coproduction Office differentiates itself with its outstanding catalogue of carefully chosen gems. As a producer, Philippe Bober worked on 30 films. Of these 30 films, 9 were selected in Competition in Cannes, 5 in Competition in Venice, 2 in Competition in Berlin, and 7 in Un Certain Regard.

Philippe Bober Jacques has edited, among others, the films of Bernard Stora, Laurent Heynemann, Raoul Peck, Christine Pascal, Joel Farges, Petr Vaclav, Djamshed Usmonov, Ramadan Suleiman, Pablo Aguero, Tsai Ming-liang, Tonie Marshall, Massoud Bakshi, Dima El-Horr, Pavel Giroud, Samuel and Frédéric Guillaume. He has also co-edited or supervised the editing of feature films in Morocco (Narjiss Nejjar), Palestine (Annemarie Jacir), Colombia (Maria Gamboa, Ruben Mendoza), Lebanon (Lamia Joreige) Switzerland (Jacob Berger, Germinal Roaux), and Vietnam (Nguyen Hoang Diep). He is credited as Creative Producer and Supervisor Editor on Miransha Naik’s filmJuze and supervisor editor on Rima Das’ filmVillage Rockstars. He is now in the process of finishing the editing of Rohena Gera’s filmSir. Jacques also co-heads the Editing Department of the French National Film School, La Femis. He was part of many seminars, workshops and juries in film schools and universities in Switzerland, Chile, Cuba, Tunisia, Albania, Iran, India, Lebanon among others.

Søren graduated in 1996 from The National Fim and Television School in Beaconsfield, England. He has been working on Features, Television Drama’s and Documentaries ever since then. His work is primarily in Denmark, but he also works in countries like US, China, Germany, UK, Argentina. Lately he has also been developing his own material from idea to treatment, in collaboration with writers.

Søren Bilsted EBBE

Pernille studied Editing at the National Danish Film School, where she now teaches; and is a guest teacher at the Norweigian Film School. She has won the Danish Acadamy Award for Editing, and the TV Award for “Editor of the Year”, among others. She has edited all but one of Susanne Biers’ films. Her films have 35 wins and 31 nominations. She has been a Script Consultant in Denmark and Scandinavia, has co-produced the documentary, ‘Alison and Parys’, and produced and directed many corporate and art-house films. She has also been the post-production director with major creative responsibility on Biers’ films. Pernille was Commission Editor on the Board for Commercial Feature Film at the Danish Film Institute from 2011-2014. Currently, she is developing a drama series for TV 2 Denmark.

Pernille Bech Christensen

Chris has 30 years’ experience in the film industry - in publicity and acquisitions. He began his career at TriStar Pictures in New York, subsequently worked at DDA Public Relations in Los Angeles and London and was founding partner of the communications agency, Premier PR. He later moved to acquisitions at Fortissimo Films. He has worked with the Dubai, Venice and Hong Kong film festivals and is currently the UK Delegate with the San Sebastian International Film Festival. He also serves as an Advisory Board Member for Cinemart in Rotterdam.

Chris Paton After his studies of Cultural Management in Vienna, Birmingham and Chicago, Gabor worked as a journalist and film critic at Austria’s largest web-based cultural magazine, cycamp. In 2003, he moved to Brussels to take charge of the distribution support department of the media program at the European Commission’s Film Fund, which was created to support the European audiovisual sector.

In 2009, Gabor became acquisitions executive at the international sales agent, The Match Factory and in August 2010, Gabor moved to Berlin to take over acquisitions of the German-French sales company, Films Boutique.

Sunmin Park is a graduate of UCLA (B.A.), University of Oxford (MBA), and lectures at academic institutions including USC, Harvard, Le Femis of France, and Film Akademie of Ludwigsburg and Berlin in Germany. She is the founder of Maxmedia, a Los Angeles-based entertainment consulting firm. She has produced films like The Emperor and The Assassin (starring Gong Li and directed by Chen Kaige) and The Others (directed by Alejandro Amenábar and starring Nicole Kidman).

Born in 1966, Laurent Danielou was a Cultural Attache to the French Embassy in Moscow (1988-1993), then in Los Angeles (1993-1998), where he founded the “French Hollywood Circle” in Los Angeles, chaired by Jean- Jacques Annaud. He also collaborated as a writer with newspapers such as Le Monde and Les Cahiers du Cinéma. He co-founded two successful magazines in Paris, Synopsis, and Zurban. He is currently Managing Director of Rezo, a production, distribution and world sales company based in Paris. Recent films include pictures directed by Courtney Hunt, Julie Delpy, Xavier Dolan, Alexander Sokourov, Pavel Lungin, Marco Bellocchio and Peter Greenaway.

Since 2011, Laurent Danielou is the Chairman of A.D.E.F., the French Film Export Association which represents all the French sales companies.

Sudhir Mishra is a renowned Indian film director & screenwriter of critically acclaimed films for which he has won many awards.

Sudhir started his career as an assistant director and scriptwriter in ’s comedy classic ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’ and later worked with Saeed in ‘Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!’ and in ‘’.

He made his directorial debut with the film, ‘Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin’ which won the National Award for the Best First Film of a Director. He went on to make ‘’, ‘Dharavi’, ‘Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin’ and ‘Chameli’. These were followed by critically acclaimed ‘’, ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’ and ‘Yeh Saali Zindagi’.

Sudhir Mishra Iikka is the CEO of IV Films. He was the Commissioning Editor for the Finnish Broadcasting Company, YLE Documentaries, Finland, since 1998 until March 2015. He is now running Rough Cut Service and is an Executive Producer of ‘Dare to Dream Asia’ and works for YLE/Kolmasulottuvuus.fi and Afridocs. He was also the Executive Producer for ‘Steps For The Future’ and one of the Series Producers for ‘Why Democracy?’. He has been a Co-producer or Executive Producer for ‘Lakshmi and Me’ by Nishta Jain, ‘Gurkha - The Selection’ by Kesang Tseten, ‘Love In India’ by Q, ‘Cecilia’ by Pankaj Johar and ‘Notes of Lyari’ by Miriam Chandy and Maheen Zia. He is the author of ‘Steps By Steps’, written together with Don Edkins.

Iikka Vehkalahti

Noemi, a documentary film director and producer, founded Belfims in 1988 as an independent production house, active in Israeli and many international co-productions, primarily in the documentary field. In 2005, she was elected President of Input, the international public television conference. Noemi has produced and partly directed all the films inYadVashem, Israel’s official memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. In Fall 2013, she was a visiting scholar at the University of Minnesota, lecturing on documentaries and has participated in various doc labs and seminars in Arles, Ludwigsburg, Tbilisi, Skopje, Sarajevo and Tel Aviv.

Noemi Schory

Born in Belgium, Peter is a film fanatic, who started working for a film magazine, to become the Commercial & Marketing Director. Following his passion for films, Peter became Marketing & Acquisitions Director for Benelux - theatrical distributors and cinema-exhibitors handling over a 100 films like, ‘The Celebration’, ‘Mulholland Drive, and ‘Lord of the Rings. In 2005, Peter founded Autlook Filmsales along with three Austrian producers, and became the CEO. Today, Autlook is a leading global distributor for documentaries. Peter is a Partner/Consultant for Autlook and a Distribution Expert Consultant of Creative Europe (Media) Programme, jury member of the Flemish Film Fund, Vienna Film Fund, and a Distribution and Marketing lecturer/tutor at film academies, workshops, and festivals.

Peter Jäger

Per is one of the most established editors in the Danish film industry. He has edited numerous critically- acclaimed documentaries and narrative features, and his latest merits include films like ‘Armadillo’ , for which he was awarded an Emmy for Best Editing of a long-format documentary, ‘TPBAFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard’, which recently premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, and ‘The Sound of a Revolution’, a feature-length documentary about Greenland’s first rock band. Per is renowned for his musically-attuned editing style, his great precision as a storyteller, his loyalty to the projects he engages in, his unique eye for the poetic yet specific, and his punk attitude to filmmaking.

Per Kirkegaard Menno has worked with filmmakers Johan van der Keuken, Peter Delpeut, Hedy Honigman, Marjoleine Boonstra, Hugo Claus, Frank Scheffer and Dumisani Pakhlati. He teaches part-time at Nedelandse Filmacademie, and is a regular tutor at editing workshops, like IDFA Summerschool, Berlin Talent Campus and Doc. Inkubator. Among the films he has mentored are ‘5 Broken Cameras’, ‘Tea Time’, and ‘Where Condors Fly’. His recently- edited films are Rob Smits’ ‘Jungle Rudy’, Hector Galves and Carlos Castaneda’s ‘Lucanamara’, Noel Burch and Alan Sekula’s ‘Forgotten Space’, Fow Ping’s ‘Nick’, Ivan Lopez Nunes’ ‘My life on Planet B’, Benjamin Oroza’s ‘Voices of El Alto’, and Simonka De Jong’s ‘The Only Son’.

Menno Borema

Claudia Tronnier studied Comparative Religion, Indology and New German Literature in Marburg followed by a Science of Media study. In 1990, she started as a freelancer at the ZDF talent-department “Das kleine Fernsehspiel” which she has been the head of since January 2008.

The talent department is supporting new authors, directors and producers and has a long tradition, starting in 1963. It is commissioning works of fiction, documentaries, docufiction and transmedia-projects from exposé/ treatment until the finished film. The TV-Lab Quantum is part of the department and specifically designed to develop new innovative TV-formats like mini-series and media-reflecting films.
