The PETAF FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network announces seven 3-year pre- doctoral positions in philosophy: Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at the University of Barcelona Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at the University of St. Andrews Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at the University of Geneva Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at the University of London Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at Stockholm University Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at the Central European University, Budapest. Successful candidates will be recruited by the respective institution. The starting date is 01 October 2010. PETAF PETAF is the first research and training network exclusively in philosophy ever to be financed by the European Commission. It aims to serve as a European research and training platform for joint philosophical research on perspectival thought, its linguistic expression and its consequences for our conception of objective, mind-independent reality. PETAF consists of 8 academic partners, including, besides those listed above, the University of Aberdeen, and 4 non-academic partners (two publishing houses and two companies in the field of software-based engineering). PETAF’s research programme, which runs for four years, addresses both general issues in metaphysics and in logic and semantics and specific issues in more specialised areas in which perspective-bound cognition plays a pivotal role, i.e. the philosophy of space and time, the philosophy of alethic and epistemic modality, the philosophy of subjectivity and consciousness, and the philosophy of norms and value. Job description In accordance with EC Grant Agreement 238128, successful applicants will immediately be admitted to the local doctoral programme without having to pay tuition fees. In case they do not finish their doctoral degree during the three years of their appointment, successful applicants can enroll for a fourth year at no fee or at a reduced fee. Throughout the time of their appointment, successful applicants pursue research in one or more of the four philosophical subdisciplines covered by PETAF’s research programme, i.e. the philosophy of logic and language, metaphysics, the philosophy of mind, and the theory of norms and value. They spend up to 30% of the time of their appointment with other network partners and must spend some of this percentage in secondment at PETAF’s non-academic partners in order to receive complementary skills training. Secondments are scheduled in accordance with a Personal Career Development Plan to be drafted by the successful applicant in close coordination with his/her supervisor and the Coordinator. Salary Salaries vary according to the country where the appointing institution is located, reflecting differences in living expenses. They are calculated by means of the correction coefficients for these countries as specified in the FP7 People Work Programme 2008: ftp://ftp.cordis.europa.eu/pub/fp7/docs/wp/people/m_wp_200801_en.pdf. Annual pre- tax salaries are as follows: Barcelona: €38.677,33; St. Andrews: €46.191,67; Geneva: € 49.195; Paris: €44.161,33; London: €46.191,67; Stockholm: €46.064,67; Budapest: €28.129,67. In addition, all recruited Early Stage Researchers receive a career exploratory allowance of a total of €2.000 as well as a travel allowance whose exact amount depends on the distance between the place of origin and the host institution. Recruited Early Stage Researchers can furthermore access funds for participation expenses of €3.600 per annum, subject to agreement and under direction of the supervisor. Eligibility Early Stage Researchers are researchers in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers, including the period of research training, starting at the date of obtaining the degree that would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the Initial Training activities are provided. Requirements Successful applicants are required to possess a master’s degree, or equivalent, in philosophy or a cognate discipline, to have good communication skills, to have a proven proficiency in both spoken and written English (see language requirements below), and to meet the EC Mobility requirement (see below). The applicants’ research proposals are required to respect the research profiles of the local teams at the institutions offering the positions they apply for. (In most cases the teams belong to established research groups such as Logos in Barcelona, Arché in St Andrews, Institut Jean-Nicod in Paris or eidos in Geneva.) Applications are thus expected to concern one or several of the following topics: Barcelona: Assertion; norms; values; relativism. St. Andrews: Time, space and tense; context; indeterminacy. Geneva: Space; time; essence; modality. Paris: Context-sensitivity in language and thought; the semantics/pragmatics distinction; subjectivity and experience. London: Subjectivity and experience; semantics, logic and metaphysics; norms, taste and value. Stockholm: Semantics and meta-semantics; perception; self-knowledge; natural kinds; normativity. Budapest: Subjectivity and experience; conceptions of space and theories of modality in a historical and contemporary context. Language Requirements Applicants whose first language is English or who have obtained a Bachelor's or a Master's degree taught exclusively in English are exempt from further requirements. Other applicants have to supply proof of one of the following (with minimum scores indicated): TOEFL (Computer-based; taken on/after March 13, 2008): 250 TOEFL (Paper-based; taken on/after March 13, 2008): 600 TOEFL (Internet-based; taken on/after March 13, 2008): 100 International English Language Test (IELTS; taken on/after March 13, 2008): 7 Pearson Test of English (Academic): 76 Cambridge Proficiency Examination (taken on/after March 13, 2005): C Cambridge Advanced English Test (taken on/after March 13, 2005): A Mobility requirement According to the Mobility Requirement for FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Networks, appointees shall not be nationals of a state in which the appointing institution is located. (In the case of a researcher holding more than one nationality, he/she will be able to be appointed by an institution located in the country of his/her nationality in which (s)he has not resided during the previous 5 years.) At the time of appointment, the researcher may not have resided or carried out his/her main activity in the country of the appointing institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her appointment. Short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. As an exception to the general rule, a researcher holding the nationality from a European member state or an Associated Country can be appointed in his/her country of nationality if s/he can provide evidence testifying that s/he has legally resided and had his/her main activity in a non-Associated third country for at least three of the last four years immediately prior to his/her appointment. Countries that are Associated Countries in the sense of FP7 are Switzerland, Israel, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Turkey, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Application procedure All applications must be submitted by email to the Coordinator under [email protected]. Applications must include a completed Application Form, an up-to-date CV, a two-page research proposal, a written work sample of preferably no more than 5000 words, and two letters of reference sent separately by the referees. Proof of a master’s degree, or equivalent, in philosophy or a cognate discipline, and proof of English language proficiency must also be provided. Application-packages, excluding letters of reference, must be sent as attached zipped files (preferably .zip or .rar files) to the Coordinator before the deadline. The emails to which the application-packages are attached must clearly state the name and contact details of the applicant, the position applied for (by city name), and the names and contact details of two academic referees. The name of the attached zipped file must clearly state the name of the applicant and the position applied for (by city name). Any applicant must ask two academic referees to send one letter of reference each directly to the Coordinator as a pdf email attachment before the deadline. The emails sent by the referees must clearly state the name of the applicant in the subject header and in the name of the attached pdf file. Applicants are expected to ensure that their referees meet the deadline. In case applicants apply for more than one of the advertised positions, they must provide one application-package for each position applied for, with each application- package’s file name stating clearly the name of the applicant and the respective position applied for, by city name. (Only one set of letters of reference is required.) They must also attach a separate file with a completed Preference Form indicating all the positions applied for and ranking these positions in accordance with the applicant’s preferences. To ensure impartiality, Preference Forms are retained by the Coordinator until local teams have reviewed the applications for the position at their respective institution. Deadline Applications and letters of reference must be sent by email before 19 March 2010, 12pm (Central European Time).
