Out of 36 states and UT’s in India, the family Sphaeroceridae is so far known only from 15 states and UT’s and maximum number of species reported from the state of West Bengal (26.98%). Among different biogeographic zones in India, the Indo-Gangetic Plains share maximum number of species (49.20%) whereas, Islands biogeographic zone has no record of these flies. The present communication is the first attempt in documenting the diversity, distribution and gaps in research of the family Sphaeroceridae from India.

A total of17 species were recorded from burrows ofrabbit and 9 fromthose offox. Spelobia talparum (Richards, 1927) and S. pseudonivalis (Dahl, 1909) are considered pholeobiont (= eucoenic) and Spelobia czizeki (Duda, 1918) pholeophilous to pholeobiont species in this habi- tat. Comparison ofthese two communities with those recorded fromother mam- mal subterraneous habitats in Europe revealed that most similar are those from the same locality irrespective ofthe host mammal species or the size ofthe bur- row. The species spectrum ofEuropean Sphaeroceridae recorded from mammal burrows is reviewed and discussed. Minilimosina (Minilimosina) speluncana sp. n. is described on males found in rabbit burrow and its relationship and habitat as- sociation are discussed. J. EPPO Datasheet: Conotrachelus nenuphar Last updated: 2021-02-26 IDENTITY Preferred name: Conotrachelus nenuphar Authority: (Herbst) Taxonomic position: Animalia: Arthropoda: Hexapoda: Insecta: Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Molytinae Common names: plum curculio, plum weevil view more common names online... EPPO Categorization: A1 list view more categorizations online... EU Categorization: A1 Quarantine pest (Annex II A) EPPO Code: CONHNE more photos... HOSTS Conotrachelus nenuphar, a native weevil of North America, was originally a pest of native rosaceous plants. However, the introduction of exotic rosaceous plants into North America, notably cultivated plants such as apple ( Malus domestica) and peach (Prunus persica) trees, widened the host range of C. nenuphar and demonstrated its adaptability to new hosts (Maier, 1990). The distribution of C. nenuphar broadly conforms to the distribution of its native wild hosts Prunus nigra, Prunus americana and Prunus mexicana (Smith and Flessel, 1968). Other wild hosts include Amelanchier arborea, A. canadensis, Crataegus spp., Malus spp., Prunus alleghaniensis, P. americana, P. maritima, P. pensylvanica, P. pumila, P. salicina, P. serotina, P. virginiana and Sorbus aucuparia (Maier, 1990). Important cultivated hosts are apples, pears (Pyrus), peaches, plums and cherries (Prunus) and blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum). In addition to its rosaceous main hosts, C. nenuphar can also be found on blackcurrants (Ribes spp. - Grossulariaceae) and blueberries (Vaccinium spp. - Ericaceae) (Maier, 1990). Second generation C. nenuphar adults appear to attack a narrower range of some cultivated species than the first generation (Lampasona et al., 2020). Prunus, Pyrus and Malus spp. are widely cultivated throughout the Euro-Mediterranean region. In addition, if the pest was introduced to this region, the adaptability of the species to new hosts would probably result in an extended host range.

  • Evaluating the Spatial Distribution of Dociostaurus Maroccanus Egg Pods Using Different Sampling Designs
Bulletin of Insectology 65 (2): 223-231, 2012 ISSN 1721-8861 Evaluating the spatial distribution of Dociostaurus maroccanus egg pods using different sampling designs 1 2 3 Ferdinando BALDACCHINO , Andrea SCIARRETTA , Rocco ADDANTE 1Department UTTRI-BIOTEC – ENEA C.R. Trisaia, Rotondella, Italy 2Department of Animal, Vegetal and Environmental Science - University of Molise, Campobasso, Italy 3Department of Agricultural and Environmental Biology and Chemistry - University of Bari, Italy Abstract In its gregarious phase the locust Dociostaurus maroccanus (Thunberg) (Orthoptera Acrididae) has periodically caused significant yield losses in many Mediterranean and Asian countries, and alarm in the general public. Population outbreaks in recent years have frequently required the application of control measures, based on those that have low environmental impact, which are only possible with a sound knowledge of locust bio-ethology and ecology. Our research was aimed at studying the spatial distribution of D. maroccanus egg pods in two Apulian egg bed areas in southern Italy, thus contributing to the rationalization of control methods. The distribution of D. maroccanus egg pods was investigated using a geostatistical approach. Three sampling designs (called A, B and C), characterized by different mesh and clod sizes, were compared to evaluate their effectiveness and afforda- bility. In both egg bed areas, the variogram models were asymptotic with a small nugget effect, and indicated an aggregated dis- tribution of egg pods. Contour maps showed that design A, based on a larger mesh and clod size, was characterized by few hot spots and an extended zone of “low density” egg pods, while design B, involving a smaller mesh and clod size, showed a more structured distribution, with various hot spots alternating with zero level zones.

This paper compiles an updated checklist of the Sicilian Cassidinae and Cryptocephalini species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae and Cryptocephalinae) starting from a critical bibliographic screening and adding new material, mainly collected by the first author in the last few decades. A total of 61 species is reported, withnew data for many rarely collected taxa. The provided data expand the known distribution of many uncommon species in Sicily. Two species are recorded for the first time: Cassida inopinata Sassi and Borowiec, 2006 and Cryptocephalus (Cryptocephalus) bimaculatus Fabricius, 1781 and two uncertain presences are confirmed: Cassida deflorata Suffrian, 1844 and Cassida nobilis Linné, 1758. The presence of other sixteen species is considered questionable and needs further confirmation. 1. Introduction Leaf beetles are all phytophagous Coleoptera. They are usually of a rather stout build, with a rounded or oval shape, often brightly coloured or with metallic hues. Worldwide some 32500 species in 2114 genera of Chrysomelidae have been described (Slipi´ nski´ et al. 2011), the majority of which occur in the tropics as is the case with numerous other Coleoptera families. Currently, the leaf beetle subfamily Cassidinae comprises the tortoise beetles (Cassidinae s. str.) and the hispine beetles (Hispinae s. str.) (Borowiec 1995; Hsiao and Windsor 1999; Chaboo 2007). So far, the Cassidinae list about 6300 described species within more than 340 genera, being the second most speciose subfamily of leaf beetles (Borowiec and Swi˛etoja´ nska´ 2014).
