    The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. Music events occur in great amount on a daily basis and it is important to plan and produce them in the right manner in order to stay relevant and secure one‟s place on the market. This report introduces various crucial matters that require attention during event organization process, such as marketing and strategic planning, communication and promotion, risk management, event programming and capacity management, to name a few. The 5-phase project management model is applied as the base on which this thesis is built. The research is conducted by comparing the theoretical and practical approach used in the music event business. The practical approach is based on examinations and interviews with the world market leader in live entertainment – Live Nation. An additional analysis of practices used in other large and successful music events in Europe and USA is also conducted. As this thesis shows, the practical approach is often easier and less rigorous than the theory. Some of the steps in this process may be simply omitted due to being considered of little relevance by the management team, many other are outsourced to professional agencies depending on requirements (security, catering).

Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

Jene legendäre Rockformation, deren ‚Spirit’ ungebrochen ist, die den Sound einer ganzen US-Region und Generation verkörpern kommen nach drei Jahren pause auf die deutsche Bühne zurück und heizen mit Ihrem typischen Rebellen Rock gewaltig ein. Leonard Skinner, der inzwischen „wohl einflussreichste Sportlehrer der amerikanischen Popkultur“ (New York Time), stand bei der Namensfindung jenes Septetts aus Jacksonville/Florida Pate, das für die Veröffentlichung seines fünften Studioalbums „Street Survivors“ mehrfach mit Platin ausgezeichnet wurde. Seit 1987 personell umformiert, wahren die Beteiligten auch über die Jahrtausend- wende hinaus Grundeinstellung und musikalische Wurzeln. Inzwischen können LYNYRD SKYNYRD auf insgesamt 60 Veröffentlichungen und mehr als 30 Millionen verkaufte Tonträger zurück-blicken. Seit über 40 Jahren gehen sie auf Tour. Setzer har blivit Grammynominerad hela sju gånger (varav han vann tre). Han gav rockabilly ett nytt ansikte på 80-talet då STRAY CATS framgångar var gigantiska världen över. På senare år har han även gett swing och storband ett uppswing med sitt välkända och maffiga Brian Setzer Orchestra, samt en mängd framgångsrika soloalbum.
