Songs of Courtship: From Wisconsin’s Ho-Chunk, Pan-Indian, and European-American Immigrant Song and Dance Traditions Recommended for High School This selection of courtship songs represent a range of musical styles from within the Ho-Chunk and early European-American immigrant communities in Wisconsin. Most of these songs were recorded in the early part of the 20th century, between 1920 and 1946. The European-American voices we hear are 2nd and 3rd generation descendants of Wisconsin immigrants who learned these Old World songs from their parents, grandparents and other community members. Where possible, translations of the foreign language lyrics are provided. Altogether, these songs provide teachers and students an opportunity to reflect on the social customs and protocols surrounding courtship from an earlier era, and to reflect on contemporary social norms and behaviors surrounding dating (and breaking up), love, and marriage. FEATURE Why America’s Black Mothers and Babies Are in a Life-or-Death Crisis The answer to the disparity in death rates has everything to do with the lived experience of being a black woman in America. By Linda Villarosa April 11, 2018 hen Simone Landrum felt tired and both nauseated and ravenous at the same time in W the spring of 2016, she recognized the signs of pregnancy. Her beloved grandmother died earlier that year, and Landrum felt a sense of divine order when her doctor conﬁrmed on Muma’s birthday that she was carrying a girl. She decided she would name her daughter Harmony. “I pictured myself teaching my daughter to sing,” says Landrum, now 23, who lives in New Orleans. “It was something I thought we could do together.” But Landrum, who was the mother of two young sons, noticed something different about this pregnancy as it progressed. The trouble began with constant headaches and sensitivity to light; Landrum described the pain as “shocking.” It would have been reasonable to guess that the crippling headaches had something to do with stress: Her relationship with her boyfriend, the baby’s father, had become increasingly contentious and eventually physically violent. Three months into her pregnancy, he became angry at her for wanting to hang out with friends and threw her to the ground outside their apartment. She scrambled to her feet, ran inside and called the police. He continued to pursue her, so she grabbed a knife. “Back up — I have a baby,” she screamed. After the police arrived, he was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including battery.

Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

They gained prominence in 1964 with their hard-driving single "You Really Got Me", written by Ray Davies with his 17-year-old brother Dave on lead guitar. Ray Davies' compositions over his lengthy career have been an astonishing study in contrasts, with a range of styles and lyrics often containing elements of satire and social commentary about the aspirations and frustrations of British life. The protopunk, powerchord rock of the early Kinks hits (“All Day and All of the Night”, “Tired Of Waiting For You”) was followed by more sensitive, introspective songs ("Waterloo Sunset"), wry humour (“Sunny Afternoon”), anthems championing individualistic lifestyles and personalities ("Lola", “See My Friends”), celebrations of traditional English culture and living ("Victoria"), Music Hall-style vaudeville ("She's Bought a Hat Like Princess Marina's"), and commercial rock which combined all these elements ("Come Dancing"). 1980s New Wave groups such as The Jam, The Knack, and The Pretenders covered Kinks songs, and in the 1990s Britpop acts such as Blur, Oasis and Supergrass cited them as a major influence. Many modern bands, such as The Killers, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Spoon, Sonic Youth and Ron Sexsmith, acknowledge The Kinks and Ray Davies' songwriting skills.
