EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT July 2019 Friday 12th Store Stock Market EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD 01392 251261 [email protected] www.kivells.com Friday 12th July 225 STORE CATTLE & STIRKS– 10AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Steers to £1280 Heifers to £1080 A tremendous quality entry of store cattle saw a top £1280 for a pair of powerful Charolais steers (25m) from Phil & Peggy Keast of North Tawton whilst slightly younger Charolais off the same farm reached £1205. Cracking British Blue and Limousin steers (24m) also from the Keast’s saw £1240 and £1200 with more quality Blue’s and Limousin to £1140 for both Andrew Cleave of Moretonhampstead and Mike Perryman of Black Dog respectively. Grand Aberdeen Angus steers saw a couple (18m) from Peter Hendy, Plymouth ease to £1145 apiece, a pen of five striking Angus (24m) from Russell & Alison Retter of Cotleigh making £1030 a head and another bunch of five fine sorts (17m) fetching £990 for Roy Nursaw of Cheriton Fitzpaine. Other native breed steers of note included a bunch of four strong Hereford’s (25m) at £970 again for Russell & Alison Retter. A trio of proper British Friesian steers (20m) sold well and to £770 for Julie Bullock of Down St Mary. As with the steer section the heifers were headed by Phil & Peggy Keast with a well turned out Charolais (24m) rising to £1080. Limousin females (25m) from Russell & Alison Retter were close behind at £1065 with others of that breed (22m) to £1050 for David Hannaford of Ashburton. Well covered Aberdeen Angus heifers (23m) from David & Justine Colton of Princetown sold to £900 with a single Fleckvieh reaching £840 for David Cole of Bradninch. 66 STIRKS & SUCKLED CALVES – 11.30AM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter 07813 068935 An excellent July entry of youngstock saw steers top £680 for a young South Devon from Phil Hutchings of Chagford with a couple of smart yearling Charolais steers from Daniel & Parkin of West Buckland close a £670 apiece. Aberdeen Angus and Limousin steers (9m) from Robert & Christine Steer of Avonwick fetched £620 and £580 whilst Hereford bullocks also eased to £580 for Phil Hutchings once more. Yearling Limousin heifers of some quality saw £615 and £560 for Leo Bradford and family of Iddesleigh with a pen of three Charolais females to £515 for Phil Hutchings. Charlie Chick of Okehampton saw £510 for a pair of South Devon heifers (10m) as did Nigel Baverstock of Doddiscombsleigh with a couple of Simmental’s (9m). Top call went to Edge Farming achieving Charolais 9 270 206 5 132 103 £395 for an Angus bull with others realising £370. Simmental 1 50 50 Limousin cross bulls from Peter Hendy of Kingsbridge reached £392, whilst the best of the Limousin 4 392 168 3 250 166 Blue bulls topped at £350 for Gibbins Agriculture Hereford 5 160 106 7 120 55 of Cullompton, GJ Merchant of Newton Abbot hit Devon £355, whilst further Blue bulls from AJ & GD Bond Aberdeen Angus & Son of Monkton hit £310 and Charolais bulls 16 395 143 19 110 61 from DE & WH Headon of North Tawton reached Holstein / Friesian 20 100 40 £270. Heifers topped at £250 again for Peter Hendy showing smart Limousin sorts, Blue heifers to £225 for AJ & GD Bond with others at £210 and £190. Further Blue heifers from KH & ME Bond & Son of Axminster hit £220 with others of the same farm achieving £200. All entry forms are available in the Market Office and online from www.kivells.com 704 SHEEP – 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 318701 642 STORE LAMBS More store lambs forward sold to a decent trade yet again with plenty of buyers present and keen on all classes of lambs. Top was £77.50, given for three smart black ewe lambs from D Wood of Tiverton who also sold ram lambs at £70.50 and a pen of smart mixed lambs at £69.50. More at £70.50 for both Tucketts Farm of Newton Abbot and Kye Trevelyan of Westleigh with both lots being Dorset’s and Charlie Gordon of Silverton made £70 of his strong Suffolk crosses. Plenty of others trading mid to late £60’s with Roger & Christine Hunt of Stoke Gabriel reaching £68.50, Ted & Martyn Chudley of Harberton making £68 & £65.50, both Steve Holman of Saltash and Bremridge Farm of East Village achieved £68 and both Mike Brown of Shaftesbury and Richard & Angela Hunt of Stoke Gabriel topped at £65. Medium term lambs generally £56 to £64 and smalls looking very dear from £40 to £55 with nothing less than £37. Overall average similar at £57.17. 40 GRAZING EWES Some better ewes on offer topped at £80 for D Wood, £70.50 for Bremridge Farms and £70 for Lovaton Farm Partnership of South Tawton with the majority of others £50 to £62. 9 EWES & 13 LAMBS (22 LIVES) A nice entry of 8 flock aged Texel x ewes with 12 nice Llyen x lambs sold well at £173 (£62.91/life) for James Zeal of Clyst St George who also had a smaller single at £80. 148 DAIRY – 11.30AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Mark Bromell A cracking entry of Dairy Cattle sold to a flying trade throughout! The commercial milk section saw an exceptional trade with an outstanding run of 10 non-pedigree Heifers from GCB Davis topping at £1900 with others to £1820 and £1800 (x5) to average £1797! Cows topped at £1520 for a second calver from Ken & Cathy Cottey of Whimple who also sold crossbred heifers to £1450. Fourth calving cows sold to £1300 for Messrs J Cornish & Sons of Tiverton. A British Friesian third calver sold at £1050 for Graham Westaway of Crediton. Summer Gold Sale of Pedigree Jerseys & Guernseys A great entry for our Summer Gold Sale commenced with the dispersal of the “Trengothal” herd on behalf of Tristan Hocking of Penzance. These cows looked very well and sold to a very strong trade topping at 1550gns for “Bluegrass Excitations Daisy Belle” by Bridon Excitation due in October with her fourth calf. Others sold to 1300gns twice for “Tarengothal Governor Kitty” a second calver by Gariffens Governor which was fresh in May and giving 30kgs. At the same money was “Whitenhill Rileys Leanna” a second calver by Chasin Rainbows Act Riley, due in September to Engineer. A fourth calver “Namaste Lix Biscuit” by DJ Lix sold well at 1250gns. Two fifth calver then sold at 1200gns demonstrating just how good these cows were! The whole herd including all cows with faults averaged £1047! The dispersal was followed by some great consignments of Jerseys and 9 organic cows were sold from the late Derek Mead’s Jerseygirls herd in Western Super Mare and they saw the day’s top price of 2400gns for “Jerseygirls Excitation Vivacious” a heifer by Bridon Excitation with 10 generations of VG & EX dams behind her with the fourth dam being the world renowned Huronia Centurion Veronica. Others from this farm sold to 1300gns for “Jerseygirls Joel Princess” a second calver by Guimo Joel due in November to Q Zik. Dave Sayer of Bridgwater sold a smart heifer “Hannahs Tequila Honey” at 1400gns. Maundrils Farm Partnership of Highbridge sold a consignment of heifers as the final part of their dispersal, their two fresh heifers topped at 1450gns for “Maunlake Valente Day Dream” by Dutch Hollow Valente, her three week old heifer calf by Guimo Joel sold well at 300gns. In-calf heifers from the same farm sold to 1100gns twice for heifers due in August and bulling heifers topped at 950gns for a cracking heifer “Maunlake Joel Tweeny” by Guimo Joel with other heifers to 550gns twice and 540gns three times. Spring born calves sold to 360gns whilst the baby heifer calves saw the strongest demand between 250-300gns. The sale finished with a consignment of 20 pedigree Guernsey youngsock from Martin & Caroline Greenslade’s “Greensfield” herd at Cullompton. The in-calf heifers topped at 1000gns for “Greensfield Bruce Lady” by Brookleigh Geo Bruce going back to the show cow “Greensfield Pink Lady EX92. Others sold to 900gns, 850gns & 800gns. Yearling heifers osld to 380gns whilst an April born heifer calf by homebred sire Greensfield Jack Star sold well at 280gns. 220 PIGS – 10.15AM Auctioneer: James Morrish 07814 010133 Another tremendous entry of 220 here at Exeter being part of 591 pigs sold be Kivells over the past few days. 101 CULL SOWS Tremendous numbers again but trade not quite to the dizzy heights of our last sale. That said, Chris Down of Budleigh Salterton saw his best at £200, £192 & £189 whilst Rob & Richard Ovenell of Torrington saw the best of their nine at £190.
