In sparsely vegetated lands, the soil surface can be colonized by photosynthetic microbes that build biocrust communities. Here we use concurrent physical, biochemical and microbiological analyses to show that mature biocrusts can increase surface soil temperature by as much as 10 °C through the accumulation of large quantities of a secondary metabolite, the microbial sunscreen scytonemin, produced by a group of late-successional cyanobacteria. Scytonemin accumulation decreases soil albedo significantly. Such localized warming has apparent and immediate consequences for the soil microbiome, inducing the replacement of thermosensitive bacterial species with more thermotolerant forms. These results reveal that not only vegetation but also microorganisms are a factor in modifying terrestrial albedo, potentially impacting biosphere feedbacks on past and future climate, and call for a direct assessment of such effects at larger scales. -

U.S. AGENCY FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT BUREAU FOR DEMOCRACY, CONFLICT, AND HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE (DCHA) OFFICE OF U.S. FOREIGN DISASTER ASSISTANCE (OFDA) ALGERIA – Floods Fact Sheet #1, Fiscal Year (FY) 2002 November 30, 2001 Overview/Numbers Affected · On November 10, 2001 violent gales and a deluge of rain lasting over 24 hours hit northern Algeria causing massive mudslides and flood damage. The Government of Algeria (GOA) declared the Algiers, Oran, and Tipaza regions disaster areas, with most of the damage occurring in the capital city of Algiers. Sixteen of the country's 48 provinces were affected. · On November 26, the GOA reported that the number of deaths attributed to the flooding had reached 751. Of this total, an estimated 700 were located in Algiers. Many of the victims were swept away by torrents of rainwater rushing down from the hills of the city. Unauthorized housing, built in dry riverbeds, collapsed as a result of the swelling, causing rubble and debris to inundate the lower parts of the city. The GOA reports that the floods left an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 individuals homeless. · According to U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), seven communes of Algiers were seriously affected by the floods: Bab-El-Oued, Oued Koriche, Bouloghine, Raïs Hamidou, Hammamet, Aïn Bénian, Bouzaréah. The most severely affected of these communes was Bab el Oued, where 651 people were reported to have died. Another four communes were deemed partially affected: Dély Ibrahim, El-Biar, La Casbah, Alger-Centre. · On November 26, the GOA estimated that 2,700 buildings were severely damaged in the floods, 37 schools remained closed in the districts of Bab-El-Oued and Bouzareah, and an estimated 109 roads were damaged, although many have been reopened. -

However, in recent decades these arid areas (including the Souf) have undergone agricultural intensification processes marked by the development of irrigated crops through the exploitation of groundwater through drilling. The main objective of this study is to study the main factors and actors that have enabled this agricultural development in two study areas, namely the municipality of Ouermes and Hassi khelifa, the first two producing areas in Oued-Souf. The research methodology is based on the use of data from different agricultural services and case studies from different actors that have enabled this agricultural development (28 farmers, grain makers, technical and commercial representatives of agro-supply companies and others). This new agriculture was driven by the various public development programs (APFA Law 83-18 and concession) and the advent of the PNDA in the 2000s. Among other things, the placing on the market of certain lands has led to an increasing commodification of land via the buy/sell market and FVI (using indirect leasing). -

Courriel : [email protected] RÉSUMÉ : À la lumière de recherches récentes, l'hydrographie du Bas-Sahara est revisitée. Il est montré que les oueds mythiques, Igharghar à partir du sud du Grand Erg Oriental, Mya au niveau de Ouargla et Rhir n'existent pas. Parmi les oueds réels fonctionnels, on commence à mieux connaître ceux qui descendent de l'Atlas saharien avec leurs barrages et beaucoup moins bien ceux de la dorsale du M'Zab. Des oueds réels fossiles viennent d'être découverts dans le Souf, à l'amont du Grand Erg Oriental. Les seules vraies rivières, pérennes, tel le grand drain, sont celles alimentées par les eaux de collature des oasis et des réseaux pluviaux des villes. They show that mythical wadis such as wadi Igharghar from south of the Grand Erg Oriental, wadi Mya close to Ouargla and wadi Rhir do not exist. Among the functional real wadis, those that run from the saharan Atlas mountains are best known, due to their dams. Those of the M'Zab ridge are still poorly studied. Fossil real wadis have been just discovered in the Souf region, north of the Grand Erg Oriental. -

An 18-gene cluster is responsible for scytonemin production in Nostoc punctiforme ATCC 29133. The upstream genes scyABCDEF in the cluster are proposed to be responsible for scytonemin biosynthesis from aromatic amino acid substrates. In vitro studies of ScyA, ScyB, and ScyC proved that these enzymes indeed catalyze initial pathway reactions. Here we characterize the role of ScyD, ScyE, and ScyF, which were logically predicted to be responsible for late biosynthetic steps, in the biological context of N. punctiforme. ( D.P.A.T El Oued, 2000) Daira importante dans la Wilaya de Biskra durant toute une décennie, la Wilaya d’El Caractérisée par un climat saharien Oued n’a vu le jour qu’avec le découpage et un milieu aride, la wilaya d’El Oued de 1984. Cette promotion qui a en fait enregistre en moyenne une température touché d’autres régions du pays a permis allant de 1°C en hiver jusqu’à 45°C en été d’élever le nombre de wilayas au niveau avec une pluviométrie faible ne dépassant national de 31 à 48. Dans ce travail, on a évalué la qualité des eaux du CT, grâce à l'interprétation des résultats des analyses physico-chimiques des échantillons pris des châteaux d'eau à travers le territoire de la région d'étude. -
