More Than a Whistle 1 Just off the coast of Africa lies a small group of islands known as the Canary Islands. The second smallest of these islands is La Gomera. If you were to visit La Gomera, you might expect to hear the whistles of birds, such as canaries, in the air. Although you may indeed hear tweets drifting through the deep valleys and ravines, you would also hear a unique whistle not heard anywhere else in the world—and one that has nothing to do with birds. This whistle is called Silbo Gomero, or just el Silbo (the whistle) by the islanders. It’s far more than an ordinary whistle. It’s a spoken language. Some speculate that it began as a northern African language. Historians do know that the whistled language was used by the original inhabitants of the island. When the Spanish explorers arrived during the 1500s and 1600s, they adopted the language and el Silbo was widely spoken for centuries after. 3 El Silbo translates a dialect of Spanish by assigning whistles of different pitch and length to each vowel or consonant sound. -

Ever since the region has been renamed, some visitors have started to express that Shangri-La County has transformed into a theme park and has lost its authenticity. The current essay explored, by using Bryman’s (2004) theory of Disneyization as a framework, whether it can be said that the name change into Shangri-La has changed the region into a theme park. The resources of this research were scholarly literature, travel blogs and TripAdvisor reviews about Shangri-La. Of the four principles mentioned in Disneyization, that all describe a trend common to a theme park, the principles of theming, hybrid consumption and merchandising were all found to be take place in the Shangri-La region. -

It is divided into three parts: the founding of the People’ s Republic of China, the reform and opening up, and the beginning of the 21st century. Then it sorts out the historical track of vocal music education in colleges and universities, as well as the vocal music education experts who promote its development. Recovery and Development After the Founding of the People’s Republic of China At the end of 1949, Yunnan was peacefully liberated. And the Ministry of Culture and Education of the Southwest Military and Political Committee informed that the Kunming Normal University was renamed Kunming Normal College (renamed Yunnan Normal University on April 11, 1984). The party and the government paid great attention to the construction and development of Yunnan’ s cultural and educational undertakings. With the gradual recovery of the economy and the increasingly stable society, art education has become more and more concerned by the primary and secondary schools in the province. The Kunming Teachers College, which has been adhering to the spirit of the Southwest United University, has taken the lead in opening up art education. -

The Lisu are a Tibeto-Burman-speaking ethnic group of over one million people living in southwest China, Myanmar, Thailand and India. In China, this minority nationality [minzu] resides in the Nujiang Prefecture of Yunnan Province, southeast of the Tibetan plateau. Starting in 2005, Yan Chun Su, a self-taught Chinese filmmaker, began to travel in the Nu Jiang (Salween River) Canyon in southwest China to document the diverse music cultures of the people in that area before their environmental and cultural patrimony was affected by the construction of hydroelectric dams. -

Exploring the International Actorness of China's Yunnan Province
Beyond the Hinterland: Exploring the International Actorness of China’s Yunnan Province Song Yao Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Asia Institute The University of Melbourne September 2019 ORCID: 0000-0002-7720-3266 Abstract This study analyses the international relations of subnational governments, a phenomenon conceptualized as paradiplomacy. The scholarly literature on paradiplomacy tends to focus overly on subnational governments in federal systems, rather than those in unitary and centralized countries whose subnational governments have been increasingly proactive in international relations. China is one of these countries. Among the limited numbers of works on Chinese paradiplomacy, the majority are framed within the central-local interactions on foreign affairs and pay inadequate attention to how these provinces have participated directly in external cooperation, in line with their local interests. This body of works also displays a geographical bias, showing more interest in the prosperous coastal regions of China than its inland and border regions. This study, therefore, seeks to address the question of how Yunnan, a border province in the southwest of China, has become an international actor by exploring its international actorness. The thesis develops an original analytical framework. In contrast with previous analytical paradiplomacy frameworks, it combines the concept of paradiplomacy with the theory of actorness. After reviewing the relevant scholarly works, four dimensions of actorness have been considered: motivation, opportunity, capability, and presence. First, this study argues that, in the face of profound domestic developments and a complex external environment, Yunnan has been motivated to engage in cross-border cooperation and to consolidate its external affairs powers. -
A Phonological Reconstruction of Proto-Cerrado (Jê Family) 1
Andrey Nikulin University of Brasília; [email protected] A phonological reconstruction of Proto-Cerrado (Jê family) 1 This is the second paper in a series on the historical phonology of Macro-Jê languages. In this work, I examine the sound correspondences between the languages of the Central Jê branch, Xavánte and Xerénte, in order to arrive at a reconstruction of Proto-Central Jê. I further compare it to my reconstruction of Proto-Northern Jê (Nikulin 2016b) and propose a phonological re- construction of Proto-Cerrado, the most recent common ancestor of Proto-Central Jê and Proto-Northern Jê. The paper also includes a non-exhaustive list of Cerrado etymologies. Keywords: Jê languages, Macro-Jê languages, Xavánte, Xerénte, language reconstruction, comparative method 1. Introduction In an earlier work (Nikulin 2016b), I have proposed a phonological reconstruction of Proto- Northern Jê, the proto-language of the branch that comprises Apinayé, Kayapó (Mẽbêngôkre), Suyá (Kĩsêdjê), Tapayúna, Timbira and Panará languages spoken in Central Brazil. In this pa- per I offer a reconstruction of Proto-Cerrado (PCerr) 2, the immediate ancestor of Proto- Northern Jê (PNJ) and the proto-language of its coordinate branch, Central Jê (PCJ). Before proceeding to the main body of this paper, some comments on my PNJ reconstruc- tion (Nikulin 2016b) are necessary. These concern the internal phylogenetic structure of the Northern Jê branch and individual correspondences. 1.1. Internal structure of Northern Jê Recent lexicostatistical investigation has shown that the Northern branch of Jê languages has the internal structure shown in Figure 1. Figure 1.
