Jurgis and some of his family members find work but find bad luck again when they’re swindled while buying a house. More of the family is forced to work to keep the terrible living conditions. Jurgis’ father dies. Jurgis works in a nasty slaughterhouse, that makes you never want to eat sausage again. He joins a union and discovers how terrible the working conditions really are. A lot of people die. Jurgis gets fired and has to work at an even worse job. Ona keeps getting pregnant. Jurgis finds a “good job” at a steel mill. He gets arrested twice. He joins the socialist party.

The Wizard of Oz and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

● The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum ○ Dorothy-Everyman American, Scarecrow- Farmers, Tin Man- Industrial Workers, Lion- (politician who backed silver cause) ○ There are many other interpretations ○ Farm girl Dorothy gets pulled into the world of Oz, when her house is caught in a tornado. She kills a witch and gets some new kicks. She’s told by Glenda the Good Witch that she has to go to the Emerald city to see the Wizard. She picks up every stray along the way. She commits murder. She gets to see the wizard, but he’s a fraud. She ends up clicking her heels three times and goes home. She wakes up and realizes she was just dreaming about her family members.

● Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain ○ Conflict between civilization and natural life ○ Racial equality ○ Highlights disparity between rich and poor ○ After the 1st book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huck and Tom have lots of money, and they go to school and become “civilized”. Huck doesn’t like it, but stays because of Tom. Huck’s terrible father comes to town and harrasses Huck, eventually kidnapping and abusing him. Huck fakes his death and escapes with an escaped slave, Jim. They live on an island for a while but have to move when they’re discovered. They start on a raft on the river toward the free states. They rob robbers. They get out of sketchy situations. They meet con men. They turn on the con men. They get separated and Huck becomes a con man. Tom comes back and lies to his own family, which Huck in conning, and Tom pretends to be his own brother. They get found out, but everything is fine in the end. Huck goes West.

● Emphasized sensationalism over fact ● Hearst and Pulitzer ○ Originally derived from comic strip about life in new york slums, drawn by Richard F. Outcault- popular character was the yellow kid ○ Pulitzer and Hearst had bidding war over the hiring of Outcault ○ Focused on the revolution in cuba ○ The battleship that sunk in Havana Harbor ○ Fueled tensions that led to Spanish-American War

The Newsboys Strike of 1899

● Hearst and Pulitzer- New York World and New York Journal ○ Summer of 1899 ● Newsboys had to pay for the newspapers and were not refunded for unsold-H and P rose taxes the boys had to pay, leading to the strike ○ Only earning 26 cents a day ● Kid Blink organized strikes which would block traffic and sometimes became violent when the newsboys pushed over the delivery trucks ● H and P did not lower taxes on newspapers but agreed to buy back unsold papers
