  • Chicago's Evolving City Council Chicago City Council Report #9
Chicago’s Evolving City Council Chicago City Council Report #9 June 17, 2015 – March 29, 2017 Authored By: Dick Simpson Maureen Heffern Ponicki Allyson Nolde Thomas J. Gradel University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Political Science May 17, 2017 2 Since Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the new Chicago City Council were sworn in two years ago, there have been 67 divided roll call votes or roughly three per month. A divided roll call vote is not unanimous because at least one or more aldermen votes against the mayor and his administration. The rate of divided roll call votes – twice the rate in Emanuel’s first four year term – combined with an increase in the number of aldermen voting against the mayor – are indications that the aldermen are becoming more independent. Clearly, the city council is less of a predictable “rubber stamp” than it was during Mayor Richard M. Daley’s 22 years and Emanuel’s first four year term from 2011-2015. However, this movement away from an absolute rubber stamp is small and city council is only glacially evolving. The increase in aldermanic independence is confirmed by a downward trend in the vote agreement with the mayor, with only five aldermen voting with him 100% of the time and another 22 voting with him 90%. The number of aldermen voting with the mayor less than 90% of the time on divided votes has risen to 23 over the last two years. Aldermen are also more willing to produce their own legislation and proposed solutions to critical city problems than in the past rather than wait for, or to clear their proposals with, the 5th floor.

  • From Rubber Stamp to a Divided City Council Chicago City Council Report #11 June 12, 2019 – April 24, 2020
From Rubber Stamp to a Divided City Council Chicago City Council Report #11 June 12, 2019 – April 24, 2020 Authored By: Dick Simpson Marco Rosaire Rossi Thomas J. Gradel University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Political Science April 28, 2020 The Chicago Municipal Elections of 2019 sent earthquake-like tremors through the Chicago political landscape. The biggest shock waves caused a major upset in the race for Mayor. Chicago voters rejected Toni Preckwinkle, President of the Cook County Board President and Chair of the Cook County Democratic Party. Instead they overwhelmingly elected former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot to be their new Mayor. Lightfoot is a black lesbian woman and was a partner in a major downtown law firm. While Lightfoot had been appointed head of the Police Board, she had never previously run for any political office. More startling was the fact that Lightfoot received 74 % of the vote and won all 50 Chicago's wards. In the same elections, Chicago voters shook up and rearranged the Chicago City Council. seven incumbent Aldermen lost their seats in either the initial or run-off elections. A total of 12 new council members were victorious and were sworn in on May 20, 2019 along with the new Mayor. The new aldermen included five Socialists, five women, three African Americans, five Latinos, two council members who identified as LGBT, and one conservative Democrat who formally identified as an Independent. Before, the victory parties and swearing-in ceremonies were completed, politically interested members of the general public, politicians, and the news media began speculating about how the relationship between the new Mayor and the new city council would play out.

Though trans women of color, such as Laverne Cox and Janet Mock, are more visible in mainstream media than ever before, mainstream media still largely depicts trans people through white constructs of what it means to be trans, namely medicalized binary transitions.

ME @THE ZOO A FILM BY CHRIS MOUKARBEL AND VALERIE VEATCH ME @THE ZOO A FILM BY CHRIS MOUKARBEL AND VALERIE VEATCH ME @THE ZOO tells the story of Chris Crocker, a video blogger from a small town in Tennessee. Crocker is part of the first generation of kids raised on the Internet, coming of age under constant self- surveillance. His online videos, including the infamous YouTube declaration “Leave Britney Alone!”– have been viewed hundreds of millions of times and have created a worldwide phenomenon. This portrait weaves a tapestry of Internet media with reactions from Crocker fans and haters to examine a new controversial kind of fame: the Internet folk hero. ACQUIRED BY HBO (USA) AND BBC (UK) DIRECTOR’S WORD Like so many others, we first discovered Chris Crocker by being sent early online videos such as “Bitch Please” and “This or That”. The first question we asked was apparently a common one. “Is this real?” Years later we began making a film that asked the same question in a more general sense. We began a documentary about the history and impact of reality televi- sion. As ideas of consciousness shift in lockstep with new technology, “Reality” has become the dominant medium. Our film research took us around the world. We interviewed everyone from the cast of the original Dutch reality show, Hollywood executives and even a Reality TV School. In the end, this hunt for reality brought us to a small town in Tennessee and to Chris Crocker. Crocker was raised in the age of reality where anyone with a camera can become a star.

The Boys In The Band andò in scena per la prima volta al Theatre Four di CRISTIAN PEDRAZZINI New York il 14 aprile del 1968 e, contro ogni previsione, rimase in cartellone per 1001 repliche fino al 6 settembre del 1970, divenendo così un punto di riferimento, un luogo di ispirazione per le prime grandi battaglie del Movimento omosessuale americano che ebbero inizio nel 1969. Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube 1 Running Head: UNINTENTIONAL DIALOGUES ON YOUTUBE Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube RESEV 554: Semester Project Analysis Memo Laura Bestler Iowa State University December 15, 2008 Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube 2 Introduction The purpose of this video is to illustrate themes within the online user commentary reacting to Chris Crocker’s (2008) YouTube video titled, “Gay HATE on YouTube!” The central question of this study is how users intermittently engage about Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Questioning (LGTBQQ) topics represented on YouTube. The unintentional dialogues between users on YouTube™ are providing additional knowledge to what is happening within today’s society (Noblit, Flores, & Murillo, 2004). Online social networks are a natural place to employ post modern theory due to its playfulness, reflexivity, and the deconstruction of the cyber world (Noblit, Flores, & Murillo, 2004). The research findings demonstrate a connection between time and negative user reactions towards LGBTQQ topics. Why Online? An evolution of the online world has taken place to provide everyone the ability to create content. Social networks provided a way people to connect with friends, family and online social acquaintances. Similar to the offline world, user created content had begun to utilize hate language and expletives to describe people. These degrading interactions provided a catalyst for me to take action. This online social laboratory can be brought to light, deconstructed and transcended. Therefore, helping people understand their actions are broader than snippet commented online. These unintentional dialogues are broadcast around the world. The internet is an environment where people’s small gestures may become large, and it is a mirror or lens of the world around them (Popkin, 2008).
