Website at http://nigeria.usembassy.gov PRESS RELEASE June 25, 2021 For Immediate Release U.S. Embassy Abuja Partners Channels Academy to Train Conflict Reporters The U.S. Embassy Abuja, in partnership with Channels Academy, has trained over 150 journalists on Conflict Reporting and Peace Journalism. In her opening remarks, the U.S. Embassy Spokesperson/Press Attaché Jeanne Clark noted that the United States recognized that security challenges exist in many forms throughout the country, and that journalists are confronted with responsibility to prioritize physical safety in addition to meeting standards of objectivity and integrity in conflict. She urged the journalists to share their experiences throughout the course of the three-day seminar and encouraged participants to identify new ways to address these security challenges. The trainer Professor Steven Youngblood from the U.S. Center for Global Peace Journalism – Park University defined and presented principles for peace journalism in conflict reporting. He cautioned journalists to refrain from what he termed war journalism. He said, "war journalism is a pattern of media coverage that includes overvaluing violent, reactive responses to conflict while undervaluing non-violent, developmental responses.” The Provost of Channels Academy, Mr Kingsley Uranta, showed appreciation for the continuous partnership with the U.S. Embassy and for bringing such training opportunities to Nigerian journalists. He also called on conflict reporters to be peace ambassadors. The training took place virtually via Zoom on June 22 – 24, 2021. Journalists converged in American Spaces in Abuja, Kano, Bauchi Sokoto, Maiduguri, Awka, and Ibadan. -

Ayua3 1,2,3 Department Of Physics, University Of Agriculture Makurdi, Benue State - Nigeria Abstract: The purpose of this work is to analyze fine particulate matter (PM10 ) distribution in the ambient air of some major towns in Nasarawa State-North central Nigeria using a high volume respirable dust sampler (APM 460 NL) model, also the meteorological parameters of the State have been correlated with the measured values. Ambient air laden with suspended particulates enter the APM 460 NL system through the inlet pipe, which separates the air into fine and coarse particles. The PM10 concentrations were analyzed to obtain the monthly average PM10 concentration and monthly maximum concentration. The results show that Nasarawa State towns of Karu and Lafia have fine particulates loading in the ambient air more than the recommended standard set by NAAQS and WHO. Variation trends of pollution levels were also identified. The fine particulate matter PM10 average concentrations in the ambient air of Nasarawa State towns had average values increase in the range of 4.0 – 18.0µg/m3 per month. The level of monthly increase of maximum average concentrations also had readings in the range of 8.0 – 20.0 µg/m3 per month. These values were compared with the NAAQS to obtain the toxicity potential for all the study towns in the State. -

YELLOW FEVER SITUATION REPORT Report of Yellow fever Cases in 14 States Serial Number 010: Epi-Week 4 (as at 29 January 2021) HIGHLIGHTS ▪ The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is currently responding to reports of yellow fever cases in 14 states - Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Kogi, Osun, Oyo, Plateau and Taraba States From the 14 States ▪ In the last week (weeks 4, 2021) ‒ Four new confirmed cases were reported from National Reference Laboratory (NRL) from 2 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Benue - [Okpokwu (3), Ado (1) ‒ Thirteen presumptive positive cases were reported from NRL [Benue (6)] and Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL) from [Enugu (6), Oyo (1)] ‒ One new LGA reported a confirmed case from Ado (1) in Benue State, ‒ No new death was recorded among confirmed cases ▪ Cumulatively from epi-week 24, 2020 – epi-week 4, 2021 ‒ A total of 1,502 suspected cases with 179 presumptive positive cases have been reported from 34 LGAs across 14 States from the Nigeria Laboratories ‒ Out of the 1,502 suspected, 161 confirmed cases [Delta-63 Ika North-East (48), Aniocha-South(6), Ika South (4), Oshimili South (2), Oshimili North(1), Ukwuani(1), Ndokwa West (1)], [Enugu-53 Enugu East (4), Enugu North (1), Igbo-Etiti (6), Igbo-Eze North(13), Isi-Uzo (15), Nkanu West (3) Nsukka(8), Udenu (3)], [Benue-17 (Ogbadibo (12), Okpokwu (4), Ado (1)], [Bauchi-9 Ganjuwa (8), Darazo (1)], [Borno-6 Gwoza(1), Hawul (1), Jere (2), Shani (1), Maiduguri (1)], [Ebonyi-3 Ohaukwu (3)], [Oyo-3), Ibarapa North East (1), Ibarapa North (2)], [Gombe-1 Akko (1)], [Imo-1 Owerri North(1)], [Kogi-1 Lokoja (1)], [Plateau- 1 Langtang North (1)], [Taraba-1 Jalingo (1)], [Akwa Ibom-1 Uyo(1)] and [Osun-1 Ilesha East (1)]. -

Similarly, a total of 54,099 tons of volume of goods/cargo travelled via the rail system in Q1 2019 as against 79,750 recorded in Q1 2018 and 68,716 in Q4 2018 representing -32.16% decline YoY and -21.27% decline QoQ respectively. Revenue generated from passengers in Q1 2019 was put at N520,794,143 as against N507,495,503 in Q4 2018. SULEIMAN ARABI (Received 22 May 2014; Revision Accepted 28 May 2014) ABSTRACT A ground scintillometric survey was carried out in the south - western part of the Kerri - Kerri Formation to identify areas of more prominent radioactive anomalies for further detailed spectrometric investigation. The total count rates recorded were generally higher in the south – western part of the study area. Analysis of the reduced data reveals the threshold activity value for the study area is 27.5 cps. Activities of more than twice the mode that will be of significance in terms of mineralization is 40 cps observed in the area north east of Tumu village with occurrence of granitic feldspar. The cosmic ray contribution to the ground activity measured in the field and used for the background correction is 4 cps. Detailed ground spectrometric investigation should be carried out in the area north – east of Tumu village to determine the radiometric mineralization potentials of the area and confirm if the radiation is due to the rocks or soil of the area. The author's primary objective is to provide a description and appraisal of the Nigerian broadcasting for readers in both Nigeria and the United States. The study describes various aspects of the industry 1 s opera tion, organizational structure, and the roles it plays in furthering the educational, political, economic and social interests of the Nigerian Society. Much of the information is based on the author 1 s personal seven years' experience as a radio journalist with the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation from 1968 to 1975 and from other sources such as newspaper articles, texts, lectures and seminars. The conviction that such research should be done was increased when American friends, as we11 as Nigerians, pointed out that systematic and critical description of broadcasting in Nigeria would be interesting to them. ABSTRACT: The hydrochemistry of River Benue at Makurdi was studied for two years (July 2011-June 2013). Water samples were collected monthly from five different Stations on the shoreline of River Benue at Makurdi. The hydrochemistry of the water samples were examined using standard methods. The results of the physico-chemical parameters indicate the river water samples with the following characteristics: conductivity ranged from 139±215.05µS/cm - 63.95±30.94µS/cm, pH varied from 6.33±0.59-6.95±0.86, TDS varied from 28.29±11.69mg/L- 69.14±106.65mg/L, TSS varied from 41.00±25.42mg/L- 87.56±57.39mg/L, colour ranged from 192.60±143.79TCU-393.01±175.73TCU, turbidity ranged from 44.53±44.28NTU – 91.38±56.54NTU, surface water temperature ranged from 28.09±1.970C – 28.99±1.630C, bicarbonate ranged from 121.98±59.13mg/L – 185.61±57.20mg/L, chloride ranged from 117.44±59.46mg/L – 173.07±71.27mg/L, nitrate ranged from 2.23±3.14mg/L – 3.76±5.22mg/L, sulphate ranged from 10.41±9.84mg/L- 17.24±15.21mg/L, phosphate ranged from 0.92±1.11mg/L- 1.47±2.07mg/L and copper ranged from 0.11±0.09mg/L- 0.31±0.34mg/L.
