The media reported that he was a member of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA), and senior clergy from that denomination featured prominently in the public and private pastoral events surrounding his death and burial. Moreover, it was interesting, although not surprising, to see how keen the church (and Christians) were to claim that he was an adherent of the Christian faith. In addition, I was fascinated by how the governing African National Congress (ANC) used the association between Mandela and the Christian faith, (and the MCSA in particular, which is South Africa’s largest mainline Christian denomination) to engage the Christian constituency in order to win voter support in the lead up to the 2014 National Elections. As a public theologian a couple of questions arose in my mind. Firstly, was it true that Nelson Mandela was a Christian (and if so, in what ways was he Christian)? She urged Bizos, a stalwart of the struggle for equal rights, to act in a manner 'befitting of your status' in society, the report notes. It says Makaziwe Mandela, Tukwini's mother, and Makaziwe's sister Zenani Mandela-Dlamini have launched a court case against Bizos and two other associates of Nelson Mandela, alleging they should not remain directors of Harmonieux Investment Holdings and Magnifique Investment Holdings because they were not properly appointed. The case also alleges that the trio has neglected its duties at the helm of the companies. Media reports have quoted 84-year-old Bizos as saying Makaziwe Mandela's goal was to take some company money, estimated to be about R11.9m, without providing details of how it would be used.

His life-long struggle for social justice and equality has been a lightening rod and beacon of hope for people all over the world, and will continue to be. He was that rare combination – a man of principle and a man of action. His selfless and relentless pursuit to champion those who had no voice, continues to influence and inspire. His achievements as a man, and as a politician, still resonate today and will do for all time. I am proud this city stood in solidarity with South Africa, rallied against apartheid and in 1994 awarded Nelson Mandela with the highest civic honour it can bestow – Freedom of the City. The memorial in Princes Park is the latest symbol of our international friendship and I’m delighted his family have personally blessed the beautiful green space. This is just the latest development in our long-standing relationship, and working alongside Mandela8, I look forward to what future opportunities we can deliver which honour the legacy of this incredible gentleman.     100 AÑOS DEL NACIMIENTO DE NELSON MANDELA “Nadie nace odiando a otra persona por el color de su piel, o su origen, o su religión” Una de las más importantes personalidades del siglo XX y de principios del siglo XXI fue Nelson Mandela. Terrorista para unos, los supremacistas blancos de Sudáfrica, símbolo de la lucha contra la segregación racial para otros, los más, fue, sin duda una figura que no deja indiferente a nadie. Activista y político que lideró los movimientos contra el apartheid y que, tras una larga lucha y 27 años de cárcel, presidió en 1994 el primer gobierno que ponía fin al régimen racista. El siglo XX dejó dos guerras mundiales, los campos de exterminio y el terror atómico, pero también grandes campeones de la lucha contra la injusticia, como Mahatma Gandhi o Martin Luther King. El último y más carismático de ellos fue Nelson Mandela. El pasado 18 de julio se cumplían 100 años de su nacimiento, por este motivo desde la fundación Gadeso queremos rendir un pequeño homenaje a la figura de uno de las grandes inspiraciones en la lucha por los derechos civiles y contra esa lacra llamada racismo con la publicación de este número de Dossiers Gadeso. Esperamos que la lectura del mismo os conmueva tanto como a nosotros. Stop racismo, paremos la intolerancia!!!
