Group Nomination of Brendan Allen and Ryleigh Egan for the Queensland Yound Volunteer Awards for 2010 In a show of public acknowledgement and appreciation of Brendan Allen's and Ryleigh Egan's on-going involvement in the of the Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club's in2CRICKET Have a Go Program, the Club nominated them for the Queensland Young Volunteer Awards for 2010 in the Sports and Recreation Volunteers category. A copy of their nomination is provided below.

The Nomination

This nomination for the Queensland Young Volunteer Award in the Sport and Recreation Volunteers Category for 2010 is for Brendan Allen (aged 19 years) and Ryleigh Egan (aged 15 years) for their individual and collective volunteering roles in ensuring the successful delivery of the Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club's in2CRICKET Have a Go Program.

Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club's in2CRICKET Have a Go Program

It's the critical question for sporting clubs concerned about their long-term success, existence and relevance: what are the essential policies, strategies and practices that must be in place to ensure the on-going recruitment of young players and their subsequent retention, first as players and then as coaches and administrators with the sporting club?

Part of the answer to this question for the Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club is its delivery arrangements for its in2CRICKET Have a Go Program.

The in2CRICKET Have a Go Program is primarily targeted at 5 to 8 year old boys and girls to give them their first positive exposure to participating in the skills and delights of playing Australia's most loved sport cricket. The program aims to develop basic motor skills and coordination in young participants whilst engaging the children in physical fitness in a fun and exciting way within the context of team work, communication, co-operation and fair play.

The Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club delivers its in2CRICKET Have a Go Program on Friday nights over summer during school terms 4 (October to December) and 1 (February to March). For the 2009- 2010 cricket season, this program attracted 70 to 80 boys and girls, their parents and younger siblings each Friday night. As the season progressed, the fun and enthusiasm of the players and their family members grow and at the end of each session they were all rewarded with a sausage sizzle and a sense of great satisfaction.

Volunteering Role of Brendan Allen and Ryleigh Egan

Brendan Allen and Ryleigh Egan are keen and talented young cricketers who are graduates of the in2CRICKET Have a Go Program and are commencing their senior careers, but concurrently are able to balance their own cricket training, playing commitments, school/work and social engagements with their cricket coaching volunteering.

Whilst most young men on a Friday night are either hanging out having a good time with mates, doing a shift with their part-time employer or relaxing at home not doing much, Brendan Allen and Ryleigh Egan spend the majority of their Friday nights during summer as volunteer junior coaches for Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club's in2CRICKET Have a Go Program.

Under the direction of a senior coach, Brendan Allen and Ryleigh Egan help deliver the in2CRICKET Have a Go Program to ensure its nightly success. Brendan and Ryleigh are there to provide a young link between the older adult coach and the very young participants. They are there to provide the enthusiasm and the energy to keep the interest level up for the entire two hour session, to demonstrate and to instruct one on one the required drills and skills, and to provide the confidence, support and leadership to get the children's parents actively involved. They are active role models as they run, throw, catch, bat, bowl and fling themselves around whilst playing with and coaching the Club's cricket players of the future.

Commitment and Loyalty

Whilst neighbouring cricket clubs have sought the services of Brendan Allen and Ryleigh Egan with tempting paid employment offers to help run their in2CRICKET Have a Go Programs, Brendan and Ryleigh have declined their offers and stayed committed and loyal to the Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club.

Follow-on Benefits of the Volunteering by Brendan Allen and Ryleigh Egan It wasn't in regards to cricket, but Albert Einstein once said " imagination is more important than knowledge " and this is definitely the case with the young boys and girls involved with Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club's in2CRICKET Have a Go Program. Knowledge of the game and the required skills will come in time but with Brendan Allen and Ryleigh Egan being so young, enthusiastic and talented the children's imagination take over and they dream that they too will be good cricketers. Being inspired and dreaming of the possibilities keeps many of the boys and girls participating Friday night after Friday night and then season after season.

Brendan and Ryleigh's dedication to volunteering is now being used to raise awareness and to encourage other teenage players within the Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club to become volunteers themselves and by doing so to make a greater contribution to their club other than just playing cricket. As a result, several young players are now starting to get their initial cricket coaching accreditations. They, in time, will follow Brendan's and Ryleigh's example and replace them in delivering Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club's in2CRICKET Have a Go Program.

Concluding Comments

Many older players, particularly those near retirement as a player, start to think about giving something back to the sport that has been a significant part of their life or lifestyle for many years. Brendan Allen and Ryleigh Egan are already doing this at the very start of their cricket careers whilst also demonstrating their willingness to acquire or develop the required array of abilities and understandings necessary for coaching, skills and knowledge transfer and to effectively relate with children and adults.

The Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club as it approaches its 50th summer of cricket in the 2010-2011 season is extremely proud and pleased with the on-going contributions that Brendan Allen and Ryleigh Egan are making through their voluntary coaching roles to help ensure the current and future success of the Club.

Last season the Club had a record number of 401 children registered and with the continued commitment of young people like Brendan Allen and Ryleigh Egan there is confidence that those numbers will continue to rise, ensuring that more children are getting and staying actively involved in this fantastic sport.

Queensland Cricket announces changes to the U17 and U19 Brisbane Competitions for the 2010-2011 Cricket Season

The Board of Queensland Cricket has advised that for the 2010-2011 Cricket Season, the Brisbane U19 and the U17 Lord's Taverners competitions will be discontinued and replaced with an U18 competition. More details about the structure and format of this U18 competition are yet to be announced but it is likely that it will be similar to the former U17 Lord's Taverners competition, which was played pre-Christmas on Sundays. Queensland Cricket's reasons for these decisions are as follows: The Board has given consideration to the youth competitions within the current Premier Grade setup, including feedback from the Clubs, State Selectors and the Game Development and High Performance Departments of Queensland Cricket in relation to the Under 19 competition in particular.

The Under 19 competition in the format that it was held last season did not significantly contribute to the State selection processes in this age group, particularly given that there are now opportunities for Under 19 players to participate in limited overs cricket as part of the Senior Men's Grades.

Similarly, feedback from end of season Club Reviews has suggested that this competition is no longer vital for player development for a majority of the Clubs. Therefore, the Board has decided to discontinue the Under 19 competition and replace the Lord's Taverners Under 17 competition with an Under 18 competition. This is seen as a logical option to improve the standard of cricket for Under 17 players given that the Under 19 competition will be withdrawn.

Extracts from the Wynnum Junior Cricket Trophy Presentation Speech by Wayne Holder on Sunday 21 March 2010

Good morning and welcome to the Wynnum Junior Cricket Trophy Presentation for the 2009-2010 cricket season.

I am Wayne Holder and I have had the pleasure of being the President of Wynnum Junior Cricket for this season.

On Friday night we had a special break-up function for our in2CRICKET Have A Go players and their families. Friday's break-up celebration concluded a series of fun filled Friday nights that began in October last year where great enjoyment was sustained under the coaching direction of Mr Noel Allen teaching our very young cricketers the basic skills of the game. I thank Noel and his ready band of helpers for their delivery of our in2CRICKET program.

This trophy presentation ceremony today represents the conclusion of a very successful cricket season for Wynnum Junior Cricket.

This success is due to several key factors.

The first key factor is the financial support we received from our generous sponsors.

Our sponsors are:

Wynnum Plaza, which is a great place to shop.

A Raptis and Sons Pty Ltd, the provider of all your seafood needs.

Termite Solutions, call them if you have or may have termites.

Aust-Star Motors, the first choice for servicing for Mercedes Benz car, if you are luck enough to drive one.

I would also like to acknowledge the support we got from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia via a Grassroots Cricket Grant.

Our sponsors' support allowed Wynnum Junior Cricket, in these difficult economic times, to keep our sign-on and registration fees affordable to working families.

With our sponsorship funds, Wynnum Junior Cricket was also able to afford to hire additional playing fields to accommodate a record number of 401 junior players.

With our additional funds, and with a good deal provided by KD Sports, Wynnum Junior Cricket purchased an Oz Bowler bowling machine. This purchase is a great step forward as our batting coaching can now be better tailored. The benefits of this bowling machine will be seen from next season onwards.

I again thank our sponsors for their generous support this season. Wynnum Junior Cricket is so much the better because of your support. The second key factor to the success of Wynnum Junior Cricket is the work undertaken behind the scenes, at our meetings, by our delegates, at our training sessions and at our games by the members of our committee, by our coaches and by our managers.

Prior to Christmas this season Wynnum Junior Cricket fielded 26 teams to play Saturday morning interclub junior cricket. Post-Christmas, with the impact of school cricket, we had 9 teams playing. In addition, we had teams representing Wynnum in the Sunday regional U15 Ray Weier and U16 Shane Watson Cup Competitions and teams in the February 2010 SEQ T20 Development Series.

Getting players assigned to each of those teams, getting the teams graded, coached and managed and ready for each game takes considerable efforts. This is only achieved because our committee members, our coaches and our managers ensured that it happened.

I thank and acknowledge the sustained efforts of our committee, our coaches and our managers throughout the season, which, with pre-planning, begins very early. Without your efforts we don't get teams playing and enjoying their cricket each week.

Special mention needs to be made of Les Homes and Paul Wheeler who, after attending a week long training course with Queensland Cricket, obtained their Level 2 Coaching Accreditation for cricket. The beneficiaries of these accreditations will in time be our young players and our other coaches, who all hold Level 1 Coaching Accreditation.

The third key factor to the success of Wynnum Junior Cricket is our players.

Our 401 registered players are all keen to continue to improve their cricket skills, to play competitive cricket and to represent their Club.

Many of our players also achieved representative selection during the season and subsequently participated in various cricket carnivals over the December January period:

Nine of our players were selected in the U12 EDJCA Ian Healy Cup teams.

Twelve of our players were selected in the various U13 BEARS representative teams.

Ten of our players were selected in the various U14 BEARS representative teams.

Three of our players were selected in the U15 BEARS representative team.

Five of our players were selected in the U16 BEARS representative team.

The highlight of the representative selections for Wynnum Junior Cricket was the selection of Lizzy Hayes in the U15 Australian Girls Honour team, which followed her outstanding bowling success with the U15 Queensland Girls team at the National Championships held in Melbourne in December 2009. Well done Lizzy, you have done your Club, your family and yourself proud.

The fourth key factor to the success of Wynnum Junior Cricket is our parents.

Our junior players obviously can only play cricket if they have their parents' support and encouragement.

My thanks therefore goes to the parents of our players for doing all the things necessary for their cricket, including: for getting them registered early and for paying their registration fees on time; for getting them to training and to games on time; for helping on occasions to get their team mates to training or to games; for providing assistance with umpiring, score keeping, or side line crowd management on a Saturday morning; and for getting them here today, which has no doubt been wedged in between their current sporting commitment.

The fifth key factor to the success of Wynnum Junior Cricket is the support we get from and the good working relationships we have with the Associations that actually organise and deliver the interclub or regional cricket competitions that our teams play in on a Saturday morning and on some Sundays.

I formally thank the Eastern Districts Junior Cricket Association for organising the U9 to U12 competitions that our teams played in on Saturday mornings.

Again the Bayside East and Redlands Cricket Association, or BEARS as fondly known, did an excellent job with arranging the Saturday morning interclub competitions for our U13 to U17 players.

My special thanks goes to the South East Queensland Cricket Association, which again organised the U15 Ray Weier and the U16 Shane Watson Cup Competitions, which on were played pre-Christmas on Sundays, and the delivering for the first time a three Sunday T20 competition in February 2010 for U12 to U16 teams. These regional competitions were excellent opportunities for some of our Wynnum players to experience a slightly standard of cricket and to play cricket at different venues around south east Queensland and northern New South Wales.

It is only through the efforts of these Associations that Wynnum Junior Cricket can provide competitive cricket games to our players.

The final key factor to the success of Wynnum Junior Cricket is the on-going support we get throughout each season from the senior component of the Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club. I thank Mr Ian Droney, President of the Club, and Mr Neil King, Secretary of the Club, for supporting Wynnum Junior Cricket.

One of Wynnum Junior Cricket's many roles is preparing players and providing the pathway to senior or grade cricket, hopefully with the Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club.

A good number of our former junior players successfully transitioned to senior cricket this season. In addition, several of our still junior players had the opportunity to play senior cricket season as well. Special mention needs to be made of Gareth Williams, captain of the Senior's Warehouse team, who each game sought to give a couple of our junior players the opportunity to play men's cricket. Under Gareth's guidance, each of these players enjoyed the experience.

I would also like to make special mention of Josh Morris, who is the Club's groundsman and curator of the three turf wickets within this sports complex. Josh was of great assistance to our coaches and players on the Saturday mornings and on the Sundays when our junior teams used these turf wickets. Thank you Josh for your support and tolerance in putting up with us.

Thank you for being here today and for your support throughout the season. I look forward you seeing back at Wynnum Junior Cricket for the 2010-2011 cricket season.

Match Report Saturday 13 March 2010 Division 1 Wynnum V Mansfield White

Saturday 20 March had us playing Mansfield Black in a one day match at Ian Droney Oval. We won the toss for the second Saturday in a row and elected to bat first.

We started well with a good run rate over the first 5 overs and we then lost a wicket which slowed us a wee bit. Taylor Stewart then came to the wicket a produced a great Innings of 69 off 41 balls. This innings was supported by Alistair Brett with a well made 22no. This batted us through to another big one day score of 4/161 off our 25 overs.

This score was a match winning total as Mansfield batted their 25 overs out but were 8/86 at the end. Our spinner, Theo Allen, produced a great 4 over bowling spell to finish with 4/11. Shaun O'Hehir (2/8) took two early wickets to have Mansfield on the back foot early. Thomas King (1/7) was our other wicket taker. Our fielding and catching was also a major reason Mansfield found it hard to get near our total. Niwa Jamieson took a fantastic running catch - maybe the catch of the season, Lizzy Hayes with a great slips catch. Brodie Hicks produced a smart stumping and two very good catches by Shaun O'Hehir led the way.

Our fielding has been outstanding the last two weeks, just a pity the season is over so soon, as this team is getting better and better and I think their best cricket is still to come.

A big thank you to all the team as it's been a pleasure to be involved with you guys. Thank you once again to all the parents help during the season. All the best to the players over the winter months. To the players who are playing Winter Warehouse cricket I will see you then.

Match Report Saturday 13 March 2010 Division 1 Wynnum V Mansfield White

Today had us playing Mansfield White on Ian Droney Oval. This game became a one day match due to the bad weather the last weekend.

We won the toss being a first victory with the coin for the post Christmas part of the season. Wynnum elected to bat on a great deck although the outfield remained a bit wet from overnight rain.

Our openers produced a match winning partnership of 115 runs as this set up a large score for the team. Both batsmen ran very well between the wickets and put the loose balls away to the boundary. Brodie Hicks led the way with a brilliant 78 runs retired, while Thomas King did a great job supporting Brodie scoring a well made 22 before also being retired after the compulsory 50 balls faced. We continued to push the score on with Niwa Jamieson 23no and Shaun O'Hehir 16no seeing us through to a final score of 3/171 off our 25 overs.

Mansfield White found this large score too much to overcome. Our bowling was tight and our fielding was good keeping the pressure on. All our bowlers contributed to an excellent victory. Jeremy Taggart 2/6, Theo Allen 1/3, Lizzy Hayes 1/7, Shaun O'Hehir 1/8, Niwa Jamieson 1/8 and Patrick Schofield 1/13 all did a fine job to bowl Mansfield White out for 75.

Once again thank you to all the parents who support the team, with special mention to Michael O'Brien for umpiring and Frank King for scoring for us. Your support is always appreciated.

Division 1 Match Report Day 2 Saturday 27 February 2010 Wynnum v Muddies at Ian Droney Oval

Day 2 had us batting on a wicket with quite a bit of juice in it. Overcast conditions and the damp in the wicket made it a difficult run chase for Wynnum. The ball moved about quite a bit early and we found now and again the ball would hold up causing our batsmen to play their shots a little early. Muddies bowled a good line and length keeping us under pressure throughout the innings making it hard to chase the required 225 needed to win.

Our captain, Brodie Hicks, battled through the early overs and fought hard to top score for Wynnum with a well made 37. The only other batsman to get into double figures was Taylor Stewart with 14. We batted through to be all out for 102 off 29 overs.

Muddies elected to bat for the remaining 14 overs. Wynnum produced a great spell of bowling, with Shaun O'Hehir (2/3) having a fiery opening spell to have Muddies 2/4 after 5 overs. Muddies lost two more wickets, including one to Jeremy Taggart (1/1) in his only over. Wynnum took 3 sharp catches Trent O'Brien, Taylor Stewart and a great and bowled by Shaun O'Hehir.

Wynnum continues to show great heart. We are proud of all the team for the fight they showed today in difficult conditions.

As always thank you to the parents. Special mention of Michael O'Brien and Frank King for helping to umpire and score each week.

Game Report Day 1 Saturday 20 February 2010 - Division 1 Wynnum-Manly v Muddies

Day 1 has us playing on Ian Droney Oval against Muddies. Wynnum lost the toss and Muddies elected to bat. We started really well, with the first ball of the day claiming a wicket. Our first 5 overs kept Muddies to 1/11. A good partnership was built between their number 2 & 3 batsmen to get them through to 80 before the fall of the 2nd wicket. Our bowlers toiled away well backed by some good fielding.

The wicket at Ian Droney Oval continues to be a very good one to bat on with nothing in it for the bowlers to work with.

We took some nice sharp catches and overall supported our bowlers pretty well. made a good 50 to spear head the Muddies team to their final score of 224. Wynnum had the satisfaction of claiming all 10 Muddies wickets. Our bowling was lead by Trent O'Brien 3/24, Shaun O'Hehir 2/21 and Theo Allen 2/40.

Day 2 is set up for an interesting run chase on a good batting strip.

As every week I must thank the parents for their support in umpiring, scoring, etc. The team is lucky to have such valuable help.

Day 2 Match Report Saturday 13 February 2010 Wynnum Division 1 Just Fail in the Run Chase

It's Day 2 of the Division 1 match between Wynnum-Manly and Redlands Sharks Red. We started our run chase on Day 2 on a hot cloudless morning at 40/0.We lost one of our openers early which set us on the back foot. We continued to build partnerships but could not sustain them long enough to overhaul the 228 Redlands scored on day 1. A great innings of 53 by Jeremy Taggart lead the way for us. All our batsmen got starts and tried hard to keep us in the game. Theo Allen 23 was our second highest scorer. Redlands' fielding was excellent as they caught everything that came their way and great ground fielding created two run outs, which applied pressure on us.

Even though we came up short with 185 runs, the team continued to show great character and tried hard to chase the total down.

Redlands batted the last 7 overs of Day 2 to finish the match at 2/52.The highlight of our 2nd innings bowling was our captain and our regular wicketkeeper, Brodie Hicks, bowling an over and claiming a wicket. We are sure to hear a lot more about Brodie's wicket.

Though we lost this game on first innings this team continues to give 100% and team spirit remains always high in this side. I am sure this team will continue to develop and grow stronger.

Once again thank-you to the parents for scoring and umpiring etc. Your support is much needed and appreciated. Chris O'Hehir Assistant Coach

Day 1 Match Report - Saturday 6 February 2010 - Wynnum-Manly Division 1 Game - Toiled Hard in Hot Conditions

Saturday 6 February 2010 had us playing Redland Sharks Red at Ian Droney Oval. It was a very hot morning. Redlands won the toss and they elected to bat. The pitch was a very good batting strip with everything playing straight and true. We started well and our opening bowlers Lizzy Hayes, who finished with 3/24 and Shaun O'Hehir, who finished with 1/24, made early inroads and had Redlands 3/27 after 6 overs.

Our bowlers then toiled hard under the hot sun and placid batting conditions. Redlands with some aggressive batting started to accelerate the score. We keep fighting hard, with Niwa Jamieson never giving up and keep running in hard for his 8 overs. Due to a hard hitting century by Roberts of Redlands, they eventually got their score through to 7/228.

We batted very well through the 8 overs to leave us in a hopefully good position of 0/40 and ready to attack on Day 2 the 228 scored by Redlands. Brodie Hicks 17no and Jeremy Taggart 19no, with a mixture of solid defence and some great attacking strokes, did a really good job seeing us through to the eight overs at 40 without loss.

The game is evenly poised and should make for an exciting 2nd day next Saturday.

Once again thank-you to all the parents who helped to score and umpire - its great having your support. And thank-you to the all the boys and Lizzy who keep giving 100% effort.

Chris O'Hehir Assistant Coach Rounds 1 and 2 of SEQ T20 Junior Development Series Washed Out Sunday 7 February 2010

After much planning and anticipation Rounds 1 and 2 of the SEQ T20 Junior Development Series was washed out for Sunday 7 February 2010. Wynnum had two U12 teams playing at KP, an U13/U14 playing at Murwillumbah and an U15/U16 playing at the Gold Coast. Parents and players started getting the telephone calls, text messages and emails from about 6:00 am to say that more sleep could be had.

Hopefully Rounds 3 and 4 of this new competition will be goers next Sunday as we have some keen boys looking forward to playing their first game of T20 cricket.

Great Performance First up for Wynnum Division 1 Saturday 30 January 2010

Saturday 30 January 2010 saw the Wynnum Division 1 team taking on Redlands Sharks Black in a 25 over one day match. Redlands Sharks won the toss and sent us in to bat on an overcast morning. Our top order batsmen battled the early movement for the first hour. Brodie Hicks 20, Jeremy Taggart 17, with great support from Thomas King 8, got us through the first hour with no major damage. After the drinks break we accelerated the score through to 123 for 4 by the end of the innings. Taylor Stewart 24, Niwa Jamieson 27no and Trent O'Brien 9no did a great job getting us to this total.

We starting off defending this total brilliantly and all our bowlers carried this on to bowl Redlands out in the 25th over for 68. Our opening bowlers, Shaun O'Hehir 1/4 and Lizzy Hayes 0/0, bowled 5 maidens out of the first 6 overs between them. This put pressure on the Redlands side. Our following bowlers, with support from outstanding fielding from the whole side, kept the pressure up. Theo Allen 2/7 was excellent along with Patrick Schofield 2/6 and Alistair Brett 1/4. Our captain, Brodie Hicks, led the team very well and kept us on top with field settings etc. We had to mention everyone in the side, because everyone really contributed to the win.

Great start for the team and their enthusiasm was outstanding. Thanks to the parents for umpiring, scoring etc as we need your support to help get these results and for the team to enjoy their cricket.

Wanderers Australia Junior Cricket Tour of the West Indies for Easter 2011

The following email has been received from Wanderers Australia in regard to their proposed junior cricket tour of the West Indies. If you are interested in this tour, then please directly contact Wanderers Australia via the contact details below.

We would like to invite junior cricketers from across Queensland to be a part of the Wanderers Australia Junior Cricket Tour for Easter 2011, and if possible we would ask if you can pass this email onto players in your district. Thank you very much!

Our squad will consist of individual players from across Australia, who will come together to form teams that will play in the West Indies during the Australian Easter school holidays in 2011. We have taken away on tour over 2000 young Australians in cricket, hockey, soccer and AFL football in the last 13 years.

The tour will travel to Barbados where they will play a series of games against club, representative and specialised sporting school's teams. Each team will play approx 7 games in total on tour over approx 18 days...... We may also be playing in Antigua subject to scheduling and availability.

The tour will finish with a brief visit to Los Angeles, where the squad will play against representative teams from the United States Under 19 program, as well as have the opportunity to tour Hollywood and Santa Monica, Disneyland and Universal Studios.

We are taking two teams (26 boys in total) and the tour is open to boys 14 to 18 years of age in 2011. Our teams will play against U15 teams and U18 teams. Parents/siblings are also welcome to join the tour as supporters.

The tour is paid off via a series of installments between now and February 2011 to make the tour affordable.

The tour will be led by experienced coaches and managers, all of whom are teachers who have level 2 or 3 coaching accreditations, and will closely supervise the boys throughout the tour. All three of our staff have toured to England or to the West Indies previously on tour with us.

In 2007 we were the first junior team from Australia to tour the Caribbean!

We already have boys on board from across Australia, and in most cases, the boys are the only individual from their area participating. Places will be filled on a first come first in basis and all players will play equal match time. Please note that our touring squad to England for Winter 2010 of 40 boys filled in 10 days, and we anticipate that this tour will also be quite popular.

Inclusions for the tour:

• International flights with Delta Airlines as well as any inter island flights required. • Accommodation with breakfast daily • A couple of tour dinners in the Caribbean and in LA • Comprehensive travel insurance • Tours of Hollywood and LA • Internal transfers via luxury coach • Arrangement of matches against local clubs, schools and representative teams in the Caribbean and in California

For more information, please head to our new look website at www.wanderersaustralia.com.au and select "Australia" then "cricket" or contact us on 02 42 943 779 for costs and payments. You can also email us on [email protected]

We hope young cricketers in your area will be interested in the fantastic opportunity.

Wynnum Junior Cricket gets Grassroots Cricket Grant from the Commonwealth Bank

Wynnum Junior Cricket was delighted to be advised in January 2010 that it had been selected to receive a grant under the Commonwealth Bank's Grants for Grassroots Cricket program. This grant included $1,000 cash and $750 worth of equipment (1 shade marquee, 2 market umbrellas, 200 water bottles and 50 field markers).

Our thanks goes to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia for their generous support of Wynnum Junior Cricket.

In our 50 word application for this grant, Wynnum Junior Cricket advised that capacity to enrol and retain additional teenage cricketers in active team sport is limited by turf wicket availability. Solution (immediate and long-term) is, with "seed" funding, to partner local school, with Club contributing to groundkeeper wages, to have turf wickets available from season start, rather than later in school year.

With this funding support from the Commonwealth Bank, follow-up discussions with the targeted local school will now be arranged to attempt to facilitate that additional turf wickets are available for Wynnum Junior cricketers for the start of the 2010-2011 cricket season.

Lizzy Hayes named in Australian U15 Honour Team

Our congratulations goes to Lizzy Hayes who has been named in the Australian U15 Honour Team following her outstanding performances at just completed U15 Girls National Titles held in Melbourne.

Below is the report from the from Queensland Cricket Website for Tuesday 8 December 2009

Rain might have ruined the hopes of the Konica Minolta Queensland Under-15 girl's team in their national final against today but the clouds held a silver lining for two members of the team.

Allrounder Jemma Barsby and left-arm pace bowler Lizzy Hayes were subsequently named in the Australian Under-15 Honour team, with Barsby topping the batting aggregates and taking the most wickets in the tournament.

Barsby, the daughter of XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls coach Trevor, scored 199 runs at 33.17 and took 12 wickets at 7.25 to be the stand-out player of the tournament. Hayes took 11 wickets at the incredible average of 4.64.

Queensland finished second behind Victoria, with their only loss of the tournament coming against the host team yesterday. Today's final was unable to be played due to early rain in Melbourne.

Hayes Stunner Inspires U15 QLD Girls (from the Queensland Cricket Website)

Thursday 3 December 2009

A stunning display of pace bowling by Manly teenager Lizzy Hayes has swept the Konica Minolta Queensland Under-15 girls' team to their second win in as many days at the national titles in Melbourne.

Hayes , who played her junior cricket with the Wynnum-Manly club, blitzed the South Australian batting line-up to clean up their top order on the way to remarkable figures of 5-3 from five overs. The left-arm quick took the first five wickets to fall as South Australia crumbled in their pursuit of Queensland's total of 9-125 from 40 overs.

Spinner Jemma Barsby claimed 2-10 from 4.1 overs to help Queensland dismiss their opponents for 84 in 28.1 overs. Earlier, Barsby (20) and Lauren Hume (20) had worked hard to give Queensland a competitive total

Sunday 6 December 2009

The Konica Minolta Queensland Under-15 girls team remains unbeaten at the national titles in Melbourne with another pair of wins today.

More fine individual performances from Jemma Barsby, Lizzy Hayes and Casey Ryan helped Queensland account for the ACT in both of their T20 matches.

In the opening match, left-arm quick Hayes finished with 3-11 from four overs while right-arm medium pacer Ryan took 2-5 from three overs as the ACT were restricted to 8-78. Queensland then scored 2-79 from 13.1 overs, with Lauren Hume 27no and allrounder Barsby, who took 2-8 in the ACT innings, scoring 28. In the second game, Queensland made 3-107 from their 20 overs, with Barsby scoring 43 and Ryan hitting 22. The ACT got close in their run chase, falling short at 7-96 with Barsby completing an impressive day in claiming 4-22 from her four overs of left-arm spin. Hayes also made it a good day, taking 1-10 from her four overs.

Queensland plays the only other unbeaten team in the tournament tomorrow, host side Victoria at the .

Junior Club Cricket Recess over Christmas School Holidays

Last Friday night (4 December 2009) and last Saturday (5 December 2009) was respectively the last night of Have a Go In2Cricket and the last round of interclub junior cricket for the pre- Christmas part of the 2009-2010 Cricket Season.

Many of the Wynnum Junior teams took the opportunity to have a post match break-up party to:

• acknowledge the players' efforts and contributions at training and during each match; • show appreciation of the parents for getting their children to each training session and to each game on time and for assisting in so many other ways to ensure that this half of the season was a success; and • thank the coach, manager, scorers and umpires as our junior players cannot play without them.

The junior cricket season now goes into recess for the Christmas school holidays to provide the opportunity for the various underage State Cricket Championships, development carnivals and interstate school cricket competitions to be held.

Saturday morning interclub junior cricket commences again on Saturday 30 January 2010.

Christmas Break-up and Thank-You for Wynnum Junior Coaches and Managers

Just a reminder that the Wynnum Junior Cricket Executive will be hosting a Christmas Break- up and Thank-you Gathering for all Junior Coaches and Managers at 6:30 pm Thursday 1o December 2009 at the Moreton Bay Sports Club.

The success of Wynnum Junior Cricket is very much dependent on the contributions from our coaches and managers, all of whom have children playing cricket for our Club. Well done and thank-you.

Maiden Century by Stuart McDonald

Congratulations to Stuart McDonald on scoring his maiden century (100on) on Saturday 28 November 2009 in the Division 2 game for Wynnum Green against Mansfield Black. Well done Stuart on this very notable achievement.

Stuart, who comes to Wynnum via St George as a Churchie boarder, will be representing Darling Downs at the U15 Cricket Development Carnival to be held at Bundaberg in January 2010.

Former Wynnum Junior Cricketers named in Preliminary U17 Boys QLD Squad

Our congratulations go to both Matthew Smith and Harry Tyler, who have both been named in the preliminary U17 Boys Queensland squad for 2009-2010. The final squad is named on 6 December 2009.

Both Matthew and Harry played much of their early cricket with Wynnum Juniors and both are now playing grade and U17 cricket with Wynnum Seniors.

Opportunities for Junior Cricketers to play Senior Warehouse Cricket

For the last two Saturdays, from the start of the current round of one day matches, the opportunity has been taken to play a couple of Wynnum junior cricketers in the Wynnum Senior Warehouse team competing in the C1S competition. So far Matt Wheeler, Jacob Robbins, Jeremy Taggart and Nick Johnson have had the opportunity, with the highlight being Nick's second ball wicket bowled middle stump much to the displeasure of the opposition batsman.

In the lead-up to Christmas with the three remaining one day games (all at KP on a Saturday afternoon), we will no doubt be providing the opportunity for other junior players to play senior Warehouse cricket for Wynnum. If you are interested in playing, then please advise your coach.

Wynnum Juniors purchase Bowling Machine

With the financial support of our wonderful sponsors (Wynnum Plaza, A Raptis and Sons Pty Ltd, Termite Solutions, Jemlec Electrical and Air Conditioning Contractors and Aust-Star Motors) and a good deal from K D Sports of Tap Gap, Wynnum Junior Cricket has purchased an Oz Bowler bowling machine. Keith Dudgeon of K D Sports demonstrated its functions and versatility at a training session on Friday 20 November 2009 at the Wynnum Nets attended by Wynnum Junior Coaches.

The Oz Bowler has great speed adjustment, can be used at two heights, can bowl all ball types and is of a much lighter weight. This purchase is a great step forward for Wynnum Junior Cricket.

Harry Day in Full Flight His First Century was Amazing

Harry Day's first century was scored on Saturday 21 November 2009. It has been described a sight to behold.

Playing for Wynnum's Division 1 team again Alexandra Hills, Harry scored 157no off 92 balls and it included 23 fours and 6 sixes. Harry's notable partnerships were 83 with Ryleigh Egan (scored 50 runs) and 80 with Hugh Pembroke (scored 19 runs).

To make it even more special Harry scored his century on Wayne Board Oval using a bat on loan from Wayne Board, who is a family friend. Harry's normal bat was being used that day by his brother Michael, who is making a comeback to cricket after a long absence. The word is that Wayne seems to think that Harry's runs belong to him. Good luck Wayne in trying to get that bat back off Harry.

To finish off his day, Harry played in the afternoon for Wynnum's 6th Grade team and he took 5/11. A very good day Harry. Well done.

Wynnum U9s Train with Australian All Stars

Some of Wynnum's U9 players had the opportunity on Sunday 22 November 2009 to train at Allan Border Field at Albion with the players in the Australian All Stars team.

A good time was had by all and our group of Wynnum players was joined by Jason Krejza.

The All Stars activities were aimed specifically at the In2Cricket age group and the kids got to play cricket on Allan Border Field along side "real" cricketers. Following the games the kids received sample bags and got the chance to hang out and go on some fun rides, bouncing castles, climb the rock wall, get their face painted - the list goes on.

As the photographs below show, they all had a lot of fun.

One of those Moments for a Wynnum Cricketing Family

Sunday 15 November 2009 saw one of those moments for the male members of the Hanley family. Dad Ross Hanley played Over 40s for Wynnum on Bill Albury Oval, son James played U17 Taverners for Wynnum on Wayne Board Oval, while son Liam Hanley played for the U14 BEARS Development team on Ian Droney Oval.

As a parent, you dream of such a day where it all comes together and you can all go together in the one car to the one venue to the cricket.

Three Fine Performances within an Excellent Day 1 Team Performance for Wynnum Division 4

Saturday 14 November 2009 saw the Wynnum Division 4 team at Tigers No 4 at Wellington Point taking on Alexandra Hills. Team confidence was high when Matthew Rutter won the toss and elected to bat on this hard, fast and small ground. Things continued to go well for the rest of the morning.

At the first drinks break at 9:00 am Todd Dawson and Liam Hanley had the score at 0/110 after 17 overs. Todd and Liam went on to have an opening partnership of 161 off 24 overs with Todd scoring 85 runs and Liam retiring on 65no. Things continued to go well with Patrick Oliver (12 runs) and Sam Craig (10 runs) keeping everything under control until Nathan Green went in to score an unbeaten 64no off just 40 balls. Kelton Moss (29no) and Billy Fry (3no) got the team to 3 for 303 before declaring after 46 overs.

After 5 overs Alexandra Hills is 1/14 at the end of Day 1 with Nathan Green taking 1/0. It was an excellent Day 1 for the Division 4 team.

Bill Gordon Division 4 Coach

Match Report Day 2 Saturday 24 October 2009 Division 4 Wynnum Vs Wellington Point at KP4 Sorry for the delay in providing the Day 2 report to you. There have been some requests from our readers to complete the story.

What a difference a week makes. While their batsmen put their heads down this week our bowlers struggled for the line and length they had the previous week and we leaked quite a few runs early on and it was a battle for 1st innings points. With Mr Sundries unfortunately chipping in with a well compiled 28 we were lucky to keep them to 152 all out. The silver lining on the performance was that we caught everything that was offered with a blinder by Xavier Gordon off Matt Rutter (2/30) and a tumbling diving effort by Dan Ryan off Nathan Green (3/49) the standout catches. Declan Arnow deserves a special mention as our standout bowler of the day with 8 tight overs for 2 /15.

With 1st innings secured, and a lead of 56, our batters (in a somewhat reversed normal batting order) went out for 20 overs of quick runs. The carnage that followed was predictable given they were a good bowling side and by the finish we were 8/65 with only Declan Arnow and Dan Ryan getting to double figures. The opposition were a good side. When they were put under pressure they responded with real application. Div 4 can to be tough!

Maiden Century by Darcy Richardson

U14 player Darcy Richardson, who is a very promising all rounder (fast bowler, batsman and leader) scored his maiden century (104 runs) in the Division 3 game for Wynnum Manly Gold against Redlands Sharks Black at Charlie Buckler Oval, Redland Bay on Saturday 31 October 2009. All players want their first century to come as soon as possible. When it comes it is very special and is often the break through for many more big scores. Well done Darcy.

No Greater Fun can be had legally on a Friday Night

Just how much fun can 60 children aged between 5 and 8 years and their parents can have on a Friday evening with a cricket bat and ball, a few sausages on the BBQ and a couple of bags of lollies thrown in the air, all under the guidance of "Mr Have A Go Cricket" Noel Allen?

Well the answer is obviously plenty when you are learning the required skills of cricket through the Milo In2Cricket Have a Go Program.

Match Report Day 1 Saturday 17 October 2009 Division 4 Wynnum Vs Wellington Point at KP4

We made a strong start this week after narrowly falling short in a run chase the previous week against Holland Park.

Todd Dawson and Sam Craig took us safely to 40 before Sam went LBW for 13. Todd looked very strong on his on side with a series of controlled pulls for 4, keeping the singles coming first with Sam and later with Patrick Oliver in a very strong partnership. Dan Ryan joined Patrick after Todd retired on 34 and again both players did well to keep the scoreboard ticking over despite some excellent bowling from the opposition.

When Paddy retired (29 no) and Dan was finally out to a tired looking pull shot for 33, we were in a strong position at 2/127. Nathan Green (39 no) and Kelton Moss (34 no) came in starting slowly but surely, building yet another great partnership. They put on a quick 81 to take us to 2/208 and allow us to declare, leaving us 30 minutes to bowl.

The opposition's batting does not seem as strong as its bowling and they seemed unconvincing in getting to 1/24 off 9 overs with Nathan Green the lucky bowler taking our only wicket (1/9 off 2 overs). There were a lot of chances and half chances for our other bowlers, with Lizzy Hayes and Declan Arnow bowling immaculate line and length and keeping the opposition under pressure continually.

As long as we keep the fundamentals of line and length in place, we have every chance of taking the 1st innings and, who knows, an early collapse from them next week might see us chasing an outright win. Well done to the batters this week. Sensible batting, clear calling and keeping the strike turning over has put us in a very strong position.

Day 2 continues on Saturday 24 October 2009.

Dan Ryan

Many thanks to the parents who help out each week.

Our coaches, managers and players cannot do without the help each week from our players' parents who help out with scoring, umpiring, crowd control, setting up the field and the many other jobs that someone needs to do to ensure that each game of cricket is enjoyable for all parties and not a burden to a few.

Many thanks to all those parents who help out each week or from time to time. Well done. It is very much appreciated. We cannot do without you.

A Fine All Round Opening Performance.

On of the stars of the opening round of cricket on Saturday 10 October 2009 was Dan Ryan. Dan, playing for the Wynnum Division 4 team, took 2 wickets for 10 runs off 4 overs (as a leg spin bowler), took a fine catch (under difficult circumstances) and then made 27 runs off 28 balls to almost chase down a total of 103 in 25 overs.

Junior Honour Board for the 2009-2010 Cricket Season

Hat trick (3/1) Thomas King on Saturday 10 October 2009 Division 5 Wynnum Gold V Wellington Point Wildcats at Brisbane State High School Oval 1

The Stuff of Dreams

For Wynnum U14 player Thomas King it couldn't have got much better. It was the stuff of dreams. First ball - wicket. Second ball wicket. Third ball wicket. Thomas's season started with a hat trick. Thomas finished his two over spell with 3 for 1, with a smile on his face, bounce in his step and with one of those forever memories.

Playing for Division 5 Wynnum Gold against Wellington Point Wildcats at Brisbane State High School Oval 1, Thomas then followed it up with 22 to top score and help his team have a first up win in the opening one day match on Saturday 10 October 2009. Wynnum Gold 69 defeated Wellington Point Wildcats 68.

The Opening of the Junior Cricket Season

For our junior players the 2009-2010 cricket season has at last started.

On Friday 9 October 2009 the season started for our In2Crcicket Have a Go players. All reports indicate that it was a great night for the players, the coaches, the parents and siblings. Noel Allen, head coach, with his great band of assistant coaches and supporters, got our youngest players off with their cricket dreams. Noel told the boys and girls that cricket can be seen as being represented by caps because as they go through their cricketing careers they will be presented with caps to acknowledge their achievements. A cap to acknowledge, for example, their playing senior grade cricket with the Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club or getting selected to play for Queensland.

Saturday 10 October 2009 saw a beautiful morning dawn and parents on the road early with their children in the car getting to various grounds for an 8:00 am start of their games. Besides the one ground being used a rodeo and one ground not having its gate open (both problems were overcome in time), the reports to date indicate that all went well for the Wynnum teams competing in the EDJCA and the BEARS interclub Saturday morning competitions.

The start of the season was also an opportunity to publicly acknowledge the support that some of our sponsors are giving to Wynnum Junior Cricket this season. Some of our coaches wore shirts denoting "Serious Termite Protection" as provided by our sponsor Termite Solutions and our Wynnum Division 4 team was able to play behind the banner supplied by Wynnum Plaza.

Players Must Wear Spikes Playing Cricket on Wynnum's Turf Pitches

All coaches, managers, players and parents are reminded that all players, irrespective of their age, must wear spikes when playing cricket on the Bill Albury Oval, the Wayne Broad Oval or the Ian Droney Oval at Carmichael Park Boundary Street, Tingalpa.

The wearing of spiked footwear helps to protect the turf pitches (the actual playing pitch and the rest of pitches in the turf block) from excessive damage as it stops the grass on the turf pitches from being "burnt" when it is run on. Rubber soled shoes without spikes will cause such damage.

Players without spikes will not be permitted to play on these Ovals.

Sunday's Sign-on Day and Initial Training A Very Special Day with Queensland Bulls Players Ben Laughlin and Alex Kemp

Many thanks to Queensland Cricket for arranging for both Alex Kemp and Ben Laughlin to attend Wynnum Junior Cricket's sign-on and initial training day on Sunday 30 August 2009.

We got them involved with our younger players and both Alex and Ben were great. They had the right combination of patience and enthusiasm. They gave instruction and advice, told the boys and girls a bit about where they had come from with their cricket, signed autographs and posed for photographs with the multiple winners of our free raffle.

Alex and Ben are great ambassadors to themselves, Queensland Cricket and to cricket. They did themselves, their Clubs (Wynnum Manly for Ben and Redlands for Alex) and Queensland Cricket proud.

Their presence at our sign on and initial training day made this day special for many of our young cricketers (and their parents). It officially marked the start of the season for us at Wynnum Junior Cricket and we are off on a very positive note.

The photos taken of our free raffle winners with Alex and Ben will be posted shortly.
