SPORTS SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 2017 Ponting predicts Australia will struggle in India MELBOURNE: Australia will struggle on their tour of India where they will play four tests against the world’s top-ranked side in spin-friendly conditions, former captain Ricky Ponting has predicted. Steve Smith’s men will travel to India next month having been beaten 4-0 four years ago. They were also whitewashed 3-0 in Sri Lanka last August in similar conditions prompting Ponting to issue a grim outlook for the team. “I think they’ll struggle,” the 42-year-old, who played 168 tests for Australia told Sky Sports Radio. “Every team that goes there struggles. “It’s become harder and harder for visiting teams to go to India. They probably make wickets to suit them more than ever before.” The last time India lost a test at home was against England at the end of 2012 and Virat Kohli’s side have won their last five series to climb to the top of the test rankings. South Africa, New Zealand and England have all lost series in India in the last 15 months and Australia’s last success in the country was in 2004 when they won a four-test series 2-1. “I went there for a lot of tours and we obviously played in some tough conditions,” added Ponting. “But the wickets were good for the first couple of days of the game and then they started to turn. “But now, even looking at what hap- pened in Sri Lanka, whenever the Australian team tours any- where on the subcontinent you can guarantee the wicket is going to turn, and turn quite a bit, from day one of the game.” Following the 3-0 drubbing in Sri Lanka, Australia’s test team plunged into a crisis with successive home defeats to South Africa.

MELBOURNE STARS BIG BASH LEAGUE V JANUARY 14, 2016 BRISBANE HEAT FACT SHEET LIBRARY Twenty20 Big Bash League In the 2011/2012 season the Twenty20 Big Bash League comprising eight city-based franchises, replaced the six state Twenty20 competition. A summary of the inaugural meeting between the Melbourne Stars and the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba, on December 20, 2011, follows: MELBOURNE STARS 7/177 (20 overs) ( RJ Quiney 97, DJ Hussey 45; NM Hauritz 3/18) defeated BRISBANE HEAT 7/169 (20 overs) (BB McCullum 36, MG Neser 30*, RJ Harris 25*, ML Hayden 22; CJ McKay 3/22) by eight runs. The Melbourne Stars won the toss and elected to bat. Opener Rob Quiney (97 off 59 balls with five 4’s and six 6’s) dominated the scoring and partnered David Hussey (45 off 33 balls) in a 105 run third wicket partnership but the remaining batting amounted to little. Chasing a moderate score the Heat began with a 39-run opening partnership. They then lost wickets regularly when a number of their batsmen failed to build an innings after a promising start and appeared out of the match at 7/114 when Ryan Harris joined Michael Neser and they added 55 in 27 minutes and they came close to achieving a surprise win. Today’s Match Squads Melbourne Stars (from Victoria unless indicated otherwise): David Hussey (captain), Scott Boland, Peter Handscomb, Sam Harper, Glenn Maxwell, Rob Quiney, Marcus Stoinis, James Faulkner, Evan Gulbis, Ben Hilfenhaus, Tom Triffitt (all Tasmania), Kevin Pietersen (Dolphins, St Lucia Zouks and England), Michael Beer (Western Australia), Daniel Worrall, Adam Zampa (both South Australia) and Luke Wright (Pune Warriors, Dhaka Gladiators and England).
