Built to deliver great vacation experiences, the first Quantum Ultra Class ship boasts the cruise line’s first private enclave for suite guests, innovative dining concepts, and stunning features and adventures – many of which have never before been seen at sea. In summer 2020, Spectrum of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas will each sail two special cruises into Tokyo’s brand-new cruise terminal, Shinkyaku Pier, offering guests a once-in-a-lifetime experience to take in the city’s vibrant energy as it comes alive during this exciting time. Spectrum will Depart on July 25 and August 2 from Shanghai, China to Tokyo, and Voyager will offer itineraries beginning July 26 out of Hong Kong anD August 2 from Tokyo, each staying overnight. In fact, this large group of people - employees and travellers - is multicultural, as they come from several countries of the world with different cultures. In this context, maintaining good health throughout cruising contributes greatly to the enjoyment of this form of maritime tourism activity and has significant economic, cultural and social benefits. In the present study, the importance of the health factor on the cruise ship is analysed with emphasis on the problems arising due to the corona virus pandemic (Covid-19). Keywords: cruise ship, health, hygiene, tourism, Covid-19 1. INTRODUCTION The cruise ship was at the centre of tourist interest in the early 1980s, when new ships, specifically designed for cruising, started being built (Starr, 1993:176). This was reinforced by aggressive advertising campaigns as well as TV programs and TV movies (Μπιωλόπνπινο & Μνίξα, 2005; Wood, 2000), such as the well-known "The Love Boat" that helped to popularize the concept of cruising and make it more attractive. This increase in demand for cruising encouraged companies to build bigger vessels.

Compiled from various sources and internet AIS, especially www.cruisemapper.com. Excludes ferries and cruise ferries. Many cruise ships have been in “warm” lay-up, when they have periodically moved from their berths or anchorages and gone for short voyages locally to give their engines and equipment “a run”, and including production of freshwater, before returning to lay-up. Ships at anchor periodically need to berth to take onboard fuel, food, provisions and other supplies. Some inter-ship crew transfers at sea are being made, outside port limits. With the resumption of “normal” cruising looking very uncertain in many countries in the near future, more cruise ships are likely to move to “cold” lay-up until the situation becomes clearer, whilst others go into shipyards for overhauls and surveys. Many cruise ships have been in lay-up for over a year, as the initial “pause” has been continually extended due to more Covid-19 outbreaks, and many financial assumptions made on the expectation of an initial two-months lockdown have needed reviewing. This has resulted in many recent sales of older ships, and limited cruising in the Mediterranean and Europe, where these areas are being affected by sporadic outbreaks in Covid-19 infections. The largest concentration of laid-up cruise ships is on the Bahamas Banks (east of Miami and south of Freeport) A large number of cruise ships are anchored off the south coast of England, west of Southampton. Another large group are anchored in the South China Sea, NE of Singapore.
