  • Presented By
2015 MEDIA KIT Presented by: Tournament of Champions By Josh Hyde “Through these doors pass the world’s finest bowlers,” read the sign at the entrance to Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn, Ohio. History has backed up this statement, as these lanes host the PBA Tournament of Champions. Upon entering, bowlers feel as if they are going to Augusta. To make this prestigious tournament, bowlers must win a PBA national title (up until 2011) to be eligible. The tournament format has been long and grueling with 24 games of qualifying and 24 games of round robin match play. When a bowler wins it all, they know they are one of game’s best. In the past, they received a white blazer and a lifetime exemption to the tournament upon winning. Winners still get a lifetime exemption but they no longer receive the white blazer. The Tournament of Champions was the only tournament that all of the bowlers cashed in, until 2011, after 2011 only a portion of the bowlers cashed. In 2013, the tournament went back to where the bowlers had to have a PBA Tour title to be eligible to bowl in the TOC and each bowler cashed in the tournament. The TOC is a prestigious bowling tournament that a pro-bowler can win. History Joe Joseph won the first Tournament of Champions in 1962. Jack Biondollio bowled the first televised 300 game in 1967. Don Johnson would make five consecutive shows from ’67-’71 including his famous 299 game against Dick Ritger’s 268-game. This would be the highest scoring match that would be a record for 23 years.
