Q: Why am I being charged this fee? A: This $.03 surcharge reflects the cost of participation in electronic tolling within the group of E-ZPass states. Because the majority of Indiana Toll Road’s customers use I-PASS transponders rather than an Indiana’s iZoom transponder, the Illinois Tollway bears the responsibility for customer service costs - $25 transponder, customer service calls, account maintenance, etc. During the summer of 2009 the Illinois Tollway began billing Indiana Toll Road Concession Company to recoup those customer service costs and now ITR has opted to pass those costs of doing business directly to I-PASS customers using the Indiana Toll Road and the Chicago Skyway. Q: The Indiana Toll Road/Skyway signage says the Illinois Tollway is charging this additional fee. A: That is incorrect. The Illinois Tollway has no ability to charge tolls or fees on any roadway system other than the Illinois Tollway. The private company that operates the Indiana Toll Road and the Chicago Skyway, has made the business decision to pass these operational costs on to I-PASS users. Q: Will the fee be deducted from my I-PASS account? A: I-PASS customers will be charged an additional 3 cents per toll on Indiana Toll Road roadways beginning January 1, 2010. Q: I only use the ITR, Can I avoid the fee by getting an i-Zoom? A: i-Zoom customers will not pay the surcharge. Any applicable i-Zoom account fees will apply. Q: Do I need to get an additional transponder? A: The Indiana Toll Road and Skyway will continue to accept E-ZPass and I-PASS transactions. We don’t recommend that drivers maintain two E-ZPass compatible transponders since the competing signals could result in double charges.
