DIEC/ SOUTH WALES and MONMOUTHSHIRE TRADING ESTATES LTD the Welsh Industrial Estates Corporation DIEC/ SOUTH WALES AND MONMOUTHSHIRE TRADING ESTATES LTD The Welsh Industrial Estates Corporation The South Wales and Monmouthshire Trading Estates Ltd, was incorporated in 1936. Its task was to introduce diverse industry into Wales. In the same year 165 acres of land at Treforest (between Cardiff and Pontypridd) were purchased and the establishment of the first industrial estate in Wales began. It expanded during the war and in 1945 the Board of Trade took control. The company changed its name to Wales and Monmouthshire Industrial Estate Ltd. Four new estates were built at Bridgend, Hirwaun, Swansea and Wrexham (co. Flint). In 1960 the firm was taken over by the Industrial Estates Management Corporation for Wales and in 1966 the name was changed to the Welsh Industrial Estates Corporation. Photograph showing the - main steam supply to the Treforest Industrial Estate at the point where it left the (older) boiler house. The larger pipe carried the steam (outwards to the Estate) while the smaller pipe returned hot water after the steam had been used on the estate. [From the earliest days of the Estate (circa 1937) steam was taken from the South Wales Power Company’s Upper Boat Power Station and distributed over some two thirds of the area of the Treforest Industrial Estate (all west of the main avenue) for heating and for use in industrial processes. The steam was carried at high pressure to four strategically placed de-superheating stations from which it was distributed to factories at lower temperatures and pressures. Some industries established at Treforest were big users of process steam and it’s availability was a material factor in their location at Treforest. When the Central Electricity Generating Board, who took over the Upper Boat Power Station on nationalisation of the electricity supply industry after the Was, gave notice that the station would cease to operate continuously, the Welsh Industrial Estates Corporation built it’s own central boiler plant to feed steam into the distribution system. This plant was commissioned in the spring of 1963. When the Central Electricity Generating Board, who took over the Upper Boat Power Station on nationalisation of the electricity supply industry after the War, gave notice that the Station would cease to operate continuously, the Welsh Industrial Estate Corporation built its own central boiler plant to feed steam into the distribution system. This plant was commissioned in the spring of 1963. The CEGB having kept the station for intermittent use for a few years, finally demolished it in the mid 1970’s and the site was acquired by the Welsh Development Agency (successors to WIEC) for extension land for the Treforest Industrial Estate] (1 photograph) DIEC/ (cont.) • October 2003
Price £2.50 Number 1 October 2003 A warm welcome to the Forum’s first Newsletter and a big thank you to all of the contributers who have produced articles for this issue. Thanks also to Lin Norton for producing the cover heading. As Editor, producing this Newsletter has been very much a steep learning curve, particularly getting to grips with ‘new technology’ so if there are any glitches in what you actually receive please bear with me. We had intended producing this Newsletter in two formats, electronic and hard copy, in order to keep the costs down and speed up distribution. However, due to the size of the finished copy it is probably too large to send to most of you as an e-mail attachment so, for the time being, we are producing it in hard copy format. Hopefully, in due course, we will be able overcome this problem so that those of you able to receive electronic communications can receive it in glorious technicolor. This first issue covers a wide range of topics from planning issues to individual building stones as well as Forum business, short notes and the first field meeting report. Jonathan Adams’ article on Cardiff’s Millennium Centre is a fore-taster for the field trip on 29th November the details of which, along with those of all of the Forum’s other meetings until the end of 2004 are to be found elsewhere in the Newsletter. Below is a report and reminder from Tim Palmer for all those of you who have yet to pay your first subscriptions.

Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru National Assembly for Wales Pwyllgor yr Economi, Seilwaith a Economy, Infrastructure and Skills Sgiliau Committee Mynediad at Fancio Access to Banking EIS(5)AB08 Ymateb gan Dragonsavers Credit Evidence from Dragonsavers Credit Union Union The current position regarding access to banking services in Wales, to include issues relating to financial inclusion and digital inclusion. Dragonsavers Credit Union is based in Rhondda Cynon Taff and has 3 branches (Treorchy, Tonyrefail and Pontyclun) over the years we have seen a significant decline in banking services within our communities. In the case of Tonyrefail, all of the banks (Lloyds and Barclays) and the post office have closed. The Credit Union is the only high street financial services provider in the town. In addition the nearest town, Porth has also seen all bank branches close and the post office move in to a local convenience shop. The credit union does not see itself as an alternative to other high street financial services, but as complementary in being able to offer individuals choice and freedom to access savings and loans. The credit union does not itself offer current account products, but works with a partner, Contis to provide these should they be required by members. These are not free products and Contis charge a monthly management fee to the accounts. In addition to accounts for individuals, Dragonsavers also offers Community Accounts, groups and businesses. These have been particularly popular with local business who require to deposit cash and with small community groups in receipt of grant funding who require an account for this purpose.
