Loving and loyal, generous and kind, Chase Kumkoski lived a life rich in family and friends. A man who easily saw the good in everyone, Chase was open, trusting, and loyal. A devoted son, partner, father, and friend, led with his heart. In so doing, he was an inspiration to all who were blessed to know him. While his days with us were far too few, the priceless gift of his love and life will surely be carried on in the hearts and lives of those he so deeply loved. America at large was prospering in the ’90s. During this final decade of the 20th Century The United States economy grew by an average of 4 percent per year between 1992 and 1999, an average of 1.7 million jobs a year were added to the American workforce, and the unemployment rate dropped to 4 percent, and the median American household income grew by 10 percent. It was a decade of much good news and astounding new achievement including the collapse of the Soviet empire, the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa. The quality of entertainment dramatically improved and creative brilliance shined in our homes in the likes of Harry Potter, Seinfeld, The Simpsons, Friends, and NYPD Blue. Pix-ar resurrected animation with Toy Story while the digital age boomed with the mainstreaming of the internet, digital phones, 3-D games, and affordable laptops. Peace and Prosperity were the order of the day, and American culture was vibrant and healthy as well. Locally, life’s good fortunes shined especially brightly for the Kumkoski family as they welcomed Chase into their hearts and home on January 30, 1996. In so many ways, Chase’s spirit was larger than life. From the start, he possessed a curiosity and passion for life that resulted in a sense of perpetual motion and a desire for adventure. As a child, he played basketball, baseball, soccer, and football. He was a member of his elementary school’s chess club, and he loved trains. Many an hour was blissfully spent building his own train track. A natural friend to all, he loved playing with his friends in the neighborhood. When not sharing time with his neighborhood pals, he could often be found sharing time with his canine companion, Bear, who was his best friend for 13 years. As a teen, Chase loved to bowl, skateboard, and play video games. Music was an enormous part of his world, and he was known for preceding his arrival just about anywhere with the sounds of his favorite artists blasting from his car’s radio. It was during his teens that he was blessed with the good fortune of meeting his girlfriend, Aspen Walker. Together, he and Aspen grew into adulthood, and their goals firmly centered on a future spent together. Their love gifted them with their greatest blessing, their daughter Briar. Without a doubt, Briar was Chase’s heart and soul. He relished in fatherhood and cherished every moment he shared with her. While his smile always lit up the room, the smile he had just for Briar could have ignited a rocket; he was that full of joy in being her daddy. He worked hard as a lineman for Telecom Placement Inc. in Westfield to provide her the comforts of a good home. It proved a job that afforded Chase the opportunity to be on the move, constantly learn new things, and use his gifts to be a valuable member of a great team. A man who understood the value in the ordinary, Chase enjoyed the simple pleasures of a good meal. Biscuits and gravy, baked spaghetti, a good cheeseburger, and a cold Pepsi were sure to put a smile on his face. He could often be found sipping on a sweet tea while watching Gordon Ramsey, and he was always up for tinkering on a car--a passion he shared with his dad. Whether listening to his favorite rap artist, Kevin Gates, sharing his passion for cars, cooking up a tasty meal, or enjoying a crime show, Chase felt each moment fully, and he was always willing to share his time and talents with others. Without a doubt, Chase’s sudden departure leaves us stunned and short of breath. While it is beyond words to imagine life without his loving presence, may we find comfort in our many memories of the young man we were privileged to know. May we find courage in carrying his legacy of embracing each person as a friend and each day as a gift forward. With every kindness we extend to another, moment we play our favorite music with abandon, glass of cold apple juice we enjoy, and challenge we courageously meet, we will keep Chase’s spirit alive in our hearts and lives where it will continue to ripple out and inspire others as he so inspired us.
